2 Parish Mission Statement With the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ s command to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both the spiritual and social needs of our people and build community within and without our parish. From the Desk of the Pastor October 15, 2017 On Praying the Rosary Apart from the Sacrifice of the Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours and the Sacraments, there is probably no more powerful prayer than the Rosary. It has become for millions and millions of Catholics throughout the centuries the most frequently used way in which they can meditate on the various events (mysteries) in the lives of Jesus and Mary. In spite of all this, the Rosary is not an easy prayer to pray. The reason? If one recites a single Hail Mary after another, it is very easy to become distracted and not even think about the words that one is saying, never mind the mystery on which one is supposed to be reflecting. That is the key: to reflect on the mystery or event so that one can better understand the love of God for us as it is revealed in the lives of Jesus and Mary. One of the ways to accomplish this is to use your imagination and picture the mystery you are praying through a decade. For example, the First Mystery of Light is the Baptism of the Lord in the Jordan. Picture it in your mind: John the Baptist has Jesus in the Jordan River, the sky above is opening, and the Holy Spirit descending like a dove and the voice of the Father says: This is my beloved Son, listen to Him. Keep that image in your mind as you say the ten Hail Marys and ask the Lord to reveal to you the beloved Son and how we are to listen to Him. We want to move from saying the Rosary to praying the Rosary. I present these thoughts to you during the month of October, which is traditionally the Month of the Holy Rosary (the Feast of the Holy Rosary was October 7 th ). We pray the Rosary as a community every morning during the week before the 7:30 Mass at the Church of the Assumption, the 8:30 AM Mass at the Church of the Immaculate Conception and the 12 Noon Mass at Immaculate Conception. Make a visit to Immaculate Conception from 7:00 AM 7:00 PM to sit and pray a Rosary in the presence of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Think about introducing the Family Rosary into your family s prayer life. In addition, always carry your Rosary beads with you. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. First Reading: Isaiah 25:6-10a On this mountain In this reading, Isaiah refers to the holy mountain, Mount Zion. He describes a time when the Lord of Hosts will provide for all peoples a feast of rich foods and choice wines. We still look forward to the promised heavenly banquet. Second Reading: Philippians 4:12-14, St. Paul thanked the Philippians for their monetary gifts. But his goal was to be self-sufficient, relying on God: I can do all things in him who strengthens me. Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Father Anthony Domenic Sorgie Gospel: Matthew 22:1-14 Like last week s Gospel reading, this is unsettling. In the first reading, the banquet symbolized our final judgment. It can be interpreted here in the same way. Many of those invited to the wedding feast either ignore the invitation or mistreated and killed those servants who were sent to remind them. This harkens back to the way the prophets were treated by those who did not like their message. Next Week: 29 th Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 st Reading: Isaiah 45:1, nd Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5b Gospel: Matthew 22: Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady

Forty percent of our parishes have participated in the campaign already. Due to the hard work and dedication of pastors, lay leaders, and parishioners, the campaign has raised over $116 million thus far. These funds will have a huge impact across the archdiocese, particularly for parish projects and capital needs. The Archdiocese of New York has embarked on a campaign to renew and rebuild our Church physically and spiritually. The vast majority of the $177M raised by the parishes will stay within parishes and the rest will support campaign costs and other archdiocesan priorities. 74% of funds ($130M) raised by parishes stay within parishes for capital improvement projects. 26% supports other archdiocesan priorities such as: $10M Extraordinary capital projects for needy parishes $4M Evangelization and lay leadership formation $8M Catholic high schools $4M Catholic Charities $14M St. Patrick s Cathedral restoration Our parish is currently engaged with the Renew + Rebuild campaign. 6 RCIA Our RCIA program began on Monday evening, September 18, with 14 adults and 2 teens who hope to receive all the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Communion, at the Easter Vigil Please pray for each of them as they journey toward full initiation in our Roman Catholic Church. If there is anyone you know who wishes to convert to our Catholic faith or finish their Sacraments of Initiation, this year s group will close and take no new converts or candidates after October 16. There is still time to join and make up the classes you may have missed. If interested, call Fr. Sorgie If you have questions about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will answer them to the best of our ability What can I do about the shortage of priests? In the Catholic Church throughout the world, the number of priests increases. However, in the United States, Canada, and parts of Europe, fewer men are entering discernment and formation for the priesthood. Fatima Prayers Pardon Prayer Given by the Angel of Peace to the Children at Fatima (Prayed 3 times) My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love Thee! I beg pardon for those who Do not believe, do not adore, Do not hope and do not love Thee. Angel s Prayer Given by the Angel of Peace to the Children at Fatima O Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore Thee profoundly. I offer Thee the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifference by which He is offended. By the infinite merits of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg the conversion of poor sinners. Amen. It is not that God is calling fewer men here than elsewhere. It may be that fewer act on their call due to lack of information or encouragement. Start by praying for more men to recognize their call to the priesthood. Then, look for a young Catholic man who has integrity and a strong relationship with God, has an ability to work with a variety of people, and has good friends and healthy relationships. Perhaps you already know someone like this who serves the Church as an altar server, a lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, or a CCD teacher. Then, tell him why you think he will make a good priest and suggest he contact one of our parish priests. Studies have shown that 9 out of 10 priests in the US are happy in their vocation and ministry and would definitely choose it again if given the chance. We are blessed here at Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady with priests and deacons who love their vocations and nothing would make us happier than to see many vocations come from our parish. Eucharistic Prayer Given by the Blessed Mother to the Children at Fatima Most Holy Trinity, I adore Thee! My God, my God, I love Thee in the Most Blessed Sacrament! Decade Prayer Given by the Blessed Mother to the Children at Fatima (Prayed after each decade of the Rosary) O My Jesus, Forgive us our sins; Save us from the fires of hell; Lead all souls to Heaven, Especially those most in need of Thy mercy. Sacrifice Prayer Given by the Blessed Mother to the Children at Fatima O Jesus, it is for love of You, For the conversion of sinners, And in reparation for the sins committed against The Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady
