4 I Believe In Jesus Leaders Ms. Lou McNutt, Church Street UMC Knoxville District & Social Action Office, Conference UMW Rev. Lyle Morton, Asbury UMC Roanoke District, Virginia Conference The study deals with 4 components: The gift of faith in Jesus Christ ~ The community of faith informs one s faith and nurtures one in faith, but belief in Jesus is a matter of personal encounter with the Holy. Faith in Jesus is a gift. The meaning of faith in Jesus ~ The transcendent nature of the reign of Christ Jesus and its implications for how we live out our faith in Him has not always been clear in the life and mission and ministry of the church. Whose faith counts ~ As we enter into a new millennium, we again hear the voices of those who challenge any notions of knowing Jesus other than through their particular ways. The issue of how we discern what is faithful to the Gospel message is an ongoing theological task of the church. The Wesleyan Quadrilateral provides us a means for our prayerful consideration of who Jesus is for us and for the world. Faith in Jesus in a post modern world ~ The post-modern world provides us opportunities to bring a word of hope to a world that, in spite of all its achievements and advancement, cannot fill the deep yearning of the heart. Lou McNutt is a member of Church Street United Methodist Church, Knoxville, where she has served in a variety of positions. In her local United Methodist Women s unit, she has served in many positions, including President. Lou has been a study leader at Church Street United Methodist Women for forty-eight years. She is a certified Lay Speaker and is certified to teach Disciple, Christian Believer and Kerygma Bible Studies. She has led retreats for women and youth and taught Sunday school for many years. Lou has studied with Dr. James Fleming since 1990 at the Intentional Growth Center at Lake Junaluska and has traveled with him on five study trips in Europe and Asia. Lou served as Adult Coordinator and chair of COS- ROW on the DCOM, as well as Adult Coordinator for the CCOM. She has led Older Adult Rallies and Baby Boomer Workshops for the Conference. Lou serves as a member of the Bishop Swanson s taskforce on Domestic Violence. She served as President of the Knoxville District United Methodist Women for four years and three years as District Spiritual Growth Coordinator. Lou has previously taught two classes in Holston Conference School of Christian Mission: Prayer and Shalom, Salaam, Peace. Her hobbies include many types of needlework, including heirloom sewing. She is married to George, a retired Engineer, and has three children Rev. Lyle E. Morton is a native of Virginia and is an Elder in the United Methodist Church of the Kentucky Conference. He started in ministry in 1973 at the New Hope Baptist Church. After serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, he served other churches before answering the call to serve as a United Methodist pastor. He served in the Wytheville District while doing his undergraduate work at Radford University. He has a Masters of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary. Lyle has a passion for teaching and preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. At present, he pastors the Asbury United Methodist Church in the Roanoke District, in the Virginia Conference. Lyle and Vera, his wife, are blessed with thirty-three years of marriage and have two sons and four grandchildren.

5 Israel Palestine Leader ~ Mr. Doug Wingeier, Asheville, North Carolina The purpose of this study is to help participants to learn about the history and complexities of relationships between Israel and Palestine. We will explore to understand the concepts of security and freedom that dominate the lives of these peoples. This study will challenge participants to move through tolerance and respect to achieve a just peace. When Jesus entered Jerusalem to the people s acclaim, the Pharisees rebuked him and demanded that he stop the clamoring of the crowds. Jesus response was, I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out (Luke 19:40). In Israel-Palestine today, the history of the region infuses the stones themselves. Any understanding of what is happening there today demands that we listen for the voices that tell the story of how the past has shaped the present and will continue to shape the future. Because history is so inextricably bound to the reality in Israel-Palestine today, the study book focuses on that history. Dr. Douglas E. Wingeier, Emeritus professor of practical theology, Garrett- Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois, has taught at Trinity Theological College, Singapore; Piula Theological College, Samoa; Lutheran Theological Seminary, Hong Kong; Methodist Theological Seminary, Seoul, Korea; Bethlehem Bible College, Palestine; Union Theological Seminary, Philippines; and in the class on Mission in the Course of Study School at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D. C. He has led travel seminars and work teams to China, Cuba, Nicaragua, Israel/ Palestine, and the Texas-Mexico border. He was a reserve member, Christian Peacemaker Teams, with service in Hebron, Palestine, Chiapas, Mexico, and Colombia. He served on a Volunteers in Mission trip to Israel/Palestine in February Dr. Wingeier is the author of several publications including Working Out Your Own Beliefs, Troublesome Bible Passages, Eight Ways To Become Christian, Keeping Holy Time: Studying The Revised Common Lectionary. He also is the author of numerous articles and curriculum units. He and his wife Carol have four children and nine grandchildren. They live at Brooks Howell Home in Asheville, North Carolina, and at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina. Creator Sang A Welcoming Song Children s Study Leader ~ Mitzi Sadler-Thorne Native America for Children ~ Through this four-session study session, children will learn something of Native histories and cultures. They will discover the Welcoming Song that the Creator sings for them and for all God s children. Author Ray Buckley Mitzi Sadler-Thorne is a member of the First United Methodist Church in Narrows, Virginia. She has been active on the local, district and conference levels in the church and the United Methodist Women. She is currently Ambassador for the Holston Home for Children for her church. SPECIAL NIGHT On Friday night we will observe a special night honoring the Native American Indians. While at Emory and Henry, Cindy sang in their Concert Choir under the direction of Charles Davis. Cindy currently belongs to a community based choir, Voce, in North Carolina. Cindy has provided music at a Wytheville District United Methodist Women Annual Meeting. Cindy and her husband, Tom, have two children. Both attend Oklahoma City University. Their son is in Oklahoma City University s law school. Their daughter is in the school s dance program. Pianist Janie Napier Janie (Sink) Napier, a native of Rocky Mount, Virginia, now resides in Hillsville, Virginia. Janie started taking piano lessons during her second year of school and began playing at her church at the early age of ten.
