As a community of faith we are committed to serve the community in which we reside. We take this call very seriously, and for the nearly 200 years since our incorporation as a parish, have continually sought opportunities to reach out to the stranger, the marginalized and the poor, in addition to seekers, searchers and doubters. As we prepare to celebrate our bicentennial in 2017, we have designed our music program to expand our mission and ministry. This is the work and vision of our Director of Music, Eric J. Milnes. Mr. Milnes has brought us a world view, a remarkable reputation, and vast experience (in addition to our Anglican canon) that have provided greater inclusion and cultural opportunities for our congregation and community. The music, in partnership with beautiful liturgies and thought-provoking preaching, offers each person a meaningful worship experience that equips each of us with a foundation from which to navigate this ever-changing, oft-times frightening world. Whether you are energized by the Second Sunday service with the band, the contemplative quality of Evening Prayer or Compline, or our weekly celebration of the Holy Eucharist from the Book of Common Prayer, there is some form of spiritual expression for everyone. Please note the remaining season of musical events listed within the program, and consider joining our efforts as a Friend of Music at St. Thomas. In his preface to the first Advent Lessons & Carols service, he wrote: In the old English liturgies, the Advent Offices made a preparation for the coming of our Lord to this earth far more vivid and eager than those of our present Prayer Book. So, an Advent Carol Service is not without suitability, if it helps to express the desire of all nations and ages. The purpose of the service is not to celebrate Christmas, but to expect it.' In the service, readings from scripture are interspersed with carols sung by the choir and hymns sung by the congregation. The appointed lessons from scripture recount God s promise to us of a Messiah, as prophesied in the Hebrew Bible, presented in a flowing format that allows the scriptures and songs to speak for themselves. Held at St. Thomas, Mamaroneck on the fourth Sunday of the season of Advent, this service is a wonderful way to conclude the season of preparation for Christmas. It is our privilege and pleasure to share it with you.
