3 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR Page 3 Dear Parishioners, Congratulations to those who received the Sacrament of Confirmation! This Saturday, Bishop Siegel and Bishop Goedert confirmed 134 young people. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: "For 'by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.'" First Holy Communion Next Saturday, our young people will be receiving their First Holy Communion. They will receive our Lord, body, blood, soul and divinity, in the Most Holy Eucharist for the first time. Let us take their example of joy and longing for this wonderful Sacrament. Totus Tuus and Vacation Bible School Please remember to sign up for our two summer programs, Vacation Bible School or Totus Tuus. LUKE S GOSPEL CORNER Judas' betrayal inaugurates Jesus' glorification, not merely His passion, and it is through Jesus passion and resurrection that He glorifies that Father. It was for "this hour" that Jesus came into the world. Through Jesus' death and resurrection He is lifted up and reunited to the Father. Through Jesus' death and resurrection the love of God is made manifest to the world most perfectly, and Jesus once more takes His place at the right hand of the Father in glory. Today's Gospel from John 13:31-35, is taken from Jesus discourse to His disciples following the Last Supper in the Garden of Gethsemane. In the Last Supper, Jesus institutes a new covenant with God s people rooted in sacrificial love. Here in the Garden He tells them, "My children, I give you a new commandment, love one another as I have loved you." Almost immediately after uttering these words, Jesus demonstrates how much He loves us through His passion and death. Jesus has reconciled us with the Father through the sacrifice of the cross. Jesus tells the disciples, "This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. As Jesus loved us without limits and laid down His life for our sake, we as Christians are called to lay down our lives for the sake of others. We see this love of neighbor lived out in the early Church. Pope Clement, a convert of St. Peter, remarked, "Let everyone be subject to his neighbor... Let the rich man provide for the wants of the poor; and let the poor man bless God, because He hath given him one by whom his needs may be supplied." Awed by the love of Christians, pagans of the first centuries exclaimed, "See how these Christians love one another!" The history of the Church is resplendent with such examples of selfless love. It was the Church who founded the first schools, hospitals, and orphanages in Europe and America to serve the underserved. St. Frances Cabrini built hospitals in Chicago, New York, and elsewhere to care for immigrants who had no other place to turn. Just last Sunday, our fellow parishioners, as members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, collected items to serve the poor. This selfless love of neighbor, lived out in the joy of Christ's resurrection with supernatural hope, drew a divided pagan culture to Christ and to His Church, and this same radical love and joy can draw our divided world to Christ and to His Church as well, for beauty attracts! Selflessness draws attention to eternity and witnesses to the words of St. Matthew, For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Let us love one another, as Christ has loved us. Let it permeate our homes and our places of work. Let us bring the joy of Christ to those in need.
