Hixson Presbyterian Church August 21, 2016 Prelude Greetings Morgan Lusk Call to Worship From Psalm 102 Prayer of Preparation & Confession All Creatures of Our God and King All creatures of our God and King, lift up your voice and with us sing Alleluia, Alleluia! Thou burning sun with golden beam, thou silver moon with softer gleam, Let all things their Creator bless, and worship Him in humbleness, O praise Him, Alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, and praise the Spirit, Three in One, All the redeemed washed by His blood Come and rejoice in His great love O praise Him! alleluia! Christ has defeated every sin Cast all your burdens now on Him He shall return in pow r to reign Heaven and earth will join to say O praise Him! Alleluia! Then who shall fall on bended knee? All creatures of our God and King Man of Sorrows! What a Name #246 Man of Sorrows! what a name for the Son of God, who came ruined sinners to reclaim: Hallelujah! what a Savior! Bearing shame and scoffing rude, in my place condemned he stood, sealed my pardon with his blood: Hallelujah! what a Savior! Guilty, vile, and helpless, we; spotless Lamb of God was he; full atonement! can it be? Hallelujah! what a Savior! Lifted up was he to die, It is finished! was his cry; now in heav n exalted high: Hallelujah! what a Savior! When he comes, our glorious King, all his ransomed home to bring, then anew this song we ll sing: Hallelujah! what a Savior!
Responsive Reading From Psalm 91 He Will Hold Me Fast When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast When the tempter would prevail, He will hold me fast I could never keep my hold Through life s fearful path For my love is often cold, He must hold me fast Chorus: He will hold me fast, He will hold me fast For my Savior loves me so, He will hold me fast Those He saves are His delight, Christ will hold me fast Precious in His holy sight, He will hold me fast He ll not let my soul be lost, His promises shall last Bought by Him at such a cost, He will hold me fast For my life He bled and died, Christ will hold me fast Justice has been satisfied, He will hold me fast Raised with Him to endless life, He will hold me fast Till our faith is turned to sight When he comes at last Choir Anthem O Great God Ordination & Installation of Officers Offertory God s Tithes and Our Offerings *Please fill out the friendship folder found at the end of the pew* Show Us Christ Sermon Serve Robert Johnson Matthew 20:20-28 (page 825 in the pew Bible) Surrender All Take all I am Lord, and all that I cling to. You are my Savior I owe everything to. Take all the treasures that lie in my storehouse. They cannot follow when I enter Your house. Chorus: So I surrender all to You. I surrender all. Take all my cravings for vain recognition, fleshly indulgence, and worldly ambition. I want so much Lord, to make You the focus, to serve You in secret and never be noticed. Take all my hunger for all that s forbidden, every desire and sin I keep hidden. Search me and know me, I want to bring to You a life that is holy and sanctified through You.
Benediction Postlude **Elders are available for prayer at the front of the sanctuary Why do we do that? Benediction At the conclusion of our morning worship the pastor typically has everyone rise to receive the benediction. When our pastor pronounces this he is speaking the blessing (which is what benediction means) of the Lord into our hearts just as Aaron was commanded to do in Number 6: Often people symbolize receiving that blessing by extending their hands as you would to receive a gift. This is a picture of the blessings we receive from the Lord and it reminds us of His faithful care as we leave to worship and serve in our daily lives. Congregation Standing Please feel free to sit as necessary. CCLI#540356
Sermon Notes - Robert Johnson Serve Matthew 20:20-28 First, Intro Worship Serve Connect & Grow Second, Self-Centeredness Ps 84:10I I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness Third, Not So Among You Eph. 5:29 No one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes & cherishes it, just as Christ does the church 1 Cor. 14:12 since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church. Eph. 4:12 To equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ Gal 6:10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. Finally, Our Servant Lord Col. 1 For the sake of his body, which is the church. I have become its servant 2 Cor 4 For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus sake. 2 Cor. 5 Jesus Died That those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Christ Gal. 5:13-14 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
Announcements for the week of August 21, 2016 Small Group Sign-ups: If you missed signing up for a small group you can stop by the tables today after church and sign up. Guest Speaker - August 28: Emily ***, MTW missionary and HPC member, will be speaking during the Sunday School hour on August 28. Come hear about the work she is doing by spreading the Gospel in sensitive areas of the world. Also, we will be hearing a report from the Acapulco Team. Uganda Trip: We have a team of 4-8 people going on the Uganda mission trip in September. Please consider supporting them. You may designate Uganda Mission trip in the memo line of your check. Nursery Rotation Resumes: We have a church-wide nursery rotation for all members in good standing who have been here at least six months. Our nursery rotation will resume for the 10:30 worship service hour. Schedules will be mailed, ed, and are posted. If you are unable to serve, please contact Alisa Gillis. Thank you so much. Learning 4 Change: Adult Sunday School Curriculum These classes meet at 9:30 every Sunday morning. Beginning August 21 The Age of Kings: 1&2 Samuel, 1&2 Kings, 1&2 Chronicles - What can history, even biblical history, possibly reveal to us about God? What was God up to in the reign of King David and his son Solomon? Why did God destroy ancient Jerusalem and send them into exile for seventy years? What relevance can the age of Old Testament kings possibly have in the life of a twenty-first century believer? Why did God speak prophetically to his people during this period of time? These questions and more will be considered in this class. We will explore together God s redemptive historical work revealed in the pages of scripture and see how the mission of the people of God both then and now has always been the same. August 21st through December 11th Taught by Greg Baney Recovering Redemption: The Bible is clear that God intends for his people to experience life abundantly. So, why are things such a mess even for Christians? This twelve-week video series will explore in depth the root of brokenness and our destructive patterns of behavior. We will learn how to reorient our lives around a right understanding and application of the gospel. It s time to start living like we believe in the on-going power of redemption! August 21st through November 20th - Taught by Thomas DeMoss Children s Ministry Programs Starting the week of August 21st Sunday School (Sunday mornings 9:30am) Our Sunday School lessons are scripturally sound and taught by knowledgeable and experienced teachers.
