Devotional The God Who Does Wonders by Bill Tucker It s been an amazing journey. Over 75 years God has blessed Quiet Hour Ministries to reach people around the world for Him. We began simply as a radiobroadcast called The Quiet Hour. No doubt my grandfather, J.L. Tucker, had no idea of God s global vision for what was then just a small, emerging ministry. Yet God led us to a work that spanned the globe first through media but in more recent years through large numbers of volunteer evangelists. It s been my privilege to personally lead hundreds of our volunteers on many mission trips. Seeing firsthand how these evangelists young and old have been filled by the Holy Spirit is something I ll never forget. The hundreds of thousands of people they ve reached for Christ only underscores further how much God has blessed our unique evangelism model. During these 75 momentous years literally millions have been impacted through this ministry. It has been a voice, a worldwide mission outreach and an extension of the hands and feet of Jesus. Today through the lives of hundreds of volunteers, God is reaching out and touching people desperate for hope. And through the message we share they find hope, encouragement and a better way of life in Jesus Christ. It s been personally thrilling for me to be a part of this ministry since its early years. Seeing the Lord guide our growth, provide just what is needed and use us to bless others has been a wonderful experience. Now today as we share God s saving grace through worldwide evangelism, I ve been blessed to work alongside people like you in winning souls for Christ! What God is doing through you and this ministry is nothing short of remarkable. I ve seen it firsthand through our overseas evangelism that s changing people for eternity. Through orphans finding happiness and hope. And through seeing people being helped directly by our Quiet Hour Ministries medical teams. Thinking about the hundreds of thousands being reached for Christ through our work, causes me to say with the Psalmist David, You are the God who does wonders; You have declared Your strength among the peoples. Psalm 77:14 NKJV. Many have told me over the years that this ministry is truly remarkable in being sustained solely through the generosity of its faithful supporters. As we celebrate this momentous 75-year milestone, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this ministry what it is today. The God who does wonders is working through you to make an amazing difference! Bill Tucker is president and speaker of Quiet Hour Ministries. SPRING 2012 Vol. 75, No. 02 Founder J. L. 4 MAILBAG I try to send $100 per month. I didn t seem to get a card or mailing in September or maybe it was misplaced. Anyway, I am sending $200 this month to help build churches. I wish it could be more. --D. T., Inverness, FL An Orphanage in Ethiopia Bibles Last Sabbath I dreamed I was in a strange place with many people going to a meeting. Someone in the crowd asked to trade Bibles with me. I did so. She got my nice Bible; I got her Bible which was falling apart. When I awoke, a thought came to my mind that someone must be in need of a Bible, but whom? Today as I was cleaning I came across an envelope and inside it was a letter from a child in Africa who was asking for Bibles. Here is my contribution. I am praying for your ministry. --E. I., Newbury Park, CA We are sending $300 to add to the Bibles for children in Africa fund. The primary and junior divisions had a vegeburger and pie sale to raise this money. Younger and older children came to help, rolling out pie crust and mixing up cinnamon roll dough. They took turns serving and helping with dishes. All did a great job, worked hard, had fun and Letters may be edited for purposes of clarity and space considerations. enjoyed the food. We are trying to help our children learn about serving and sharing God s love with others. I hope you ll be able to send a letter and pictures of these children receiving these Bibles. --J. W. and H. A., Garibaldi, OR I am the girls dean at Georgia Cumberland Academy and the girls raised this money for Hope and her friends to have Bibles of their own. God bless! --J. N., Calhoun, GA Churches The enclosed check is for the church building in Romania. My parents were both from Romania so it is very special to me. I pray you will receive enough funds to be able to finish the church there. --A. D., Holly, MI You folks do such a good work. I love the stories and letters. Some of the stories in your recent catalog booklet brought tears to my eyes. May God bless you in your endeavors. I am trying to bring a missionary spirit to the children in my small primary class, hoping that the seeds planted each Sabbath will produce an abundant harvest. At this time, they are donating $30 to help construct the orphanage in Legedadi, Ethiopia. --J. C., Ogema, WI 2010 QHM Annual RepoRT We are pleased to have received your 2010 Annual Report for Quiet Hour Ministries. It is rewarding to see the way the Lord is blessing His work through you. Glory to Him for the many souls won to Christ in many places throughout the world. --M. P. M., Nairobi, Kenya Praying for the Ministry You and your team are doing a great work. Thanks for the reports. It was very encouraging while reading the Echoes magazine to see what is going on in various parts of God s vineyard. 5 Abundant Blessings by Marilyn Senier Through My Eyes Prayers go up and BLessiNGs come down, an old Yiddish Proverb goes. That so much describes what I ve witnessed at Quiet Hour Ministries over the last two decades. A successful ministry is based on prayer and Quiet Hour Ministries believes in prayer, let me tell you! We start every work day with worship and prayer, bringing to the Lord our supporters, volunteers and those who have requested prayer. Can you imagine the number of prayers that have gone heavenward from Quiet Hour Ministries over the last 75 years? In thinking about prayer, our ministry and my nearly 20 years at Quiet Hour Ministries, I m reminded of two wonderful supporters in Michigan. We ve prayed for them many times and they pray for us too. Recently one of them, along with her granddaughter, decided to support the building of one of our chapels. Her granddaughter is so excited about it and telling all her friends at public school. In fact, the other students are now asking her questions about her religion. The grandmother is just thrilled to see the change in her granddaughter, who hasn t been able to go to Sabbath school for quite a few years! Look at how God has showered His blessings in this situation Quiet Hour Ministries has been blessed, the grandmother and granddaughter have been blessed, public school classmates have been blessed and very soon a group of new believers will be worshipping in a new chapel! The other Michigan supporters are two parents who decided to send their son, who was headed in the wrong direction, on one of our youth evangelism trips. During his final evangelistic meeting the young man made an appeal to accept Christ and be baptized. The people gathered at the front, gleaming with joy. Looking into their faces, he suddenly stepped down from the pulpit, joined those in front and asked to be baptized as well! As he slipped into the baptismal waters among those he had shared God s saving grace with, our other team members sang praises to Jesus as tears flowed down their faces. And his parents were so thankful to God as well! The Lord really does have a way of multiplying blessings! Many of you reading this article have seen this ministry grow over the years. The areas being reached are increasing and we keep telling more and more people about Jesus. What a blessing it must be for you to know you have played an important part through your gifts and prayers. We are blessed too and are so encouraged by your support! As I think about our 75-year history all I can say is God is an awesome God! He has given us staff, volunteers, supporters and friends who care about this ministry and are eager to help reach others for Christ. God also blesses each of you in special ways and I ve loved seeing that happen as well. All of you wonderful people are answers to prayer and a major blessing! Thank You! And if you find yourself saying, I would love to help out, but there s nothing I can do. Oh yes, there is something you can do pray without ceasing! For when your prayers go up, blessings come down! Marilyn Senier retired in December 2011 after nearly 20 years of service to Quiet Hour Ministries. She held a number of positions at our ministry and most recently was our development officer. We ll be forever grateful for her hard work and faithful prayers. (800) SPRING 2012 ECHOES

It s About Jesus and People by Randy Bates Sharing our vision for worldwide evangelism In the shade of a tree outside a dusty village a group of children wait. Like children everywhere, they play together with whatever is at hand, in this case one small wheel nailed to a stick. They regularly peer down the road, looking for the lady with the kind eyes and the ready smile. She tells the most amazing stories using pieces of cloth with people and animals on them that stick to a board. The stories are about people who lived long ago and a God who knows and loves them now. Walking aimlessly through the streets of a city, high in the mountains of Peru, a young man wonders. Usually he is in class at this time of the evening. He is going to night school to try to improve his future. Tonight, though, he is seeking something that is missing. He can t put a finger on it, can t name it, he just knows there is something missing. Should I, the middle-aged man wonders. Could I? He had never done anything like this before. He has known about Jesus all his life. He accepted Jesus as his personal Savior at an early age. Like many, he participated in local church services but never became involved in outreach. Now he had an opportunity to share his love for Jesus. A little reserved, some would say shy, public speaking was not his gift. Still, he wondered. Casting a vision In July 2011 our staff, board of directors and others got together to begin developing our strategic plan for the next five years. After a Sabbath afternoon of prayer and reflection, we spent Sunday working together to discern the vision God has in mind for us. Out of our time together came several inspiring core concepts for Quiet Hour Ministries. Foremost was that we are deeply committed to sharing saving grace around the world. For 75 years that has been the driving force behind this ministry. It was the desire behind the first radiobroadcast in Portland, Oregon. It is our desire today. That weekend also brought into focus the fact that many people have worked together with us in sharing saving grace. Thousands of volunteers have gone with Quiet Hour Ministries in the last several years on short term mission trips. I was one of them. Like many before me, that experience changed my life forever. Knowing that we can only share saving grace in partnership ECHOES SPRING

with God is also at our core. We are clear that we rely on God for grace ourselves. He gave us this ministry of reconciliation. Paul wrote that we are Christ s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal of reconciliation through us. 2 Corinthians 5:20 NIV. These three core concepts are brought together in our new mission statement, Partnering with God in leading people to share His saving grace. 10, 3,200 and 1 million Numbers don t often cause excitement. But these three numbers encapsulate what s so exciting about our vision for worldwide evangelism. Our new mission statement gave birth to this vision. Our vision is this: to reach 1 million people in 2016 with the message that Jesus loves them. To do this will take 5,000 volunteers. We have shared saving grace in a variety of ways over our 75-year history. By multiplying our team of volunteers by a factor of 10, we can share saving grace 10 times more. For every child under a tree enjoying stories, imagine 10 more happy faces. For every volunteer, see 10 more sharing God s love and becoming forever changed themselves. This would mean that on an average day, 208 Quiet Hour Ministries volunteers would be telling people about Jesus and inviting them into a lifelong relationship with Him. And on an average day, our volunteers would be reaching 3,200 people for Christ! As all these numbers add up, things get really exciting. Imagine more than 1 million people being reached for Christ every year! That s our goal! Lives changed for eternity Yet this isn t about numbers. It s about Jesus and people. People just like the ones I introduced at the start. The young children s wait is soon rewarded as down the dusty rutted road a four-wheel drive vehicle bounces. Arriving in a cloud of dust, the lady with the kind eyes greets them with a large smile. Quickly they gather to hear more stories about the man she calls Jesus. In the same village, people are being provided with eye-glasses and some basic medical care. In the evenings they gather to hear more about this man called Jesus. The whole village is buzzing with excitement. There are so many who accept her invitation to ask Jesus into their hearts that a new church is needed! The young man in Peru pauses in the light spilling from an open doorway. Looking inside, he sees pictures on a screen at the front of Our Strategic Vision a large room. Intrigued, he slips in the back and sits down. As he listens, his heart stirs within and he feels the empty place begin to fill. Drawn by the message, he returns night after night. One night the speaker makes an appeal to accept Jesus and the young man stands. Afterwards he says, The empty place is now full! The middle-aged man spends two weeks holding evangelistic meetings in a small community. Twelve people are baptized from his meetings. And he is changed forever. He has now experienced what it means to share his faith. And he knows that when he steps out in faith, he doesn t do it alone, God walks beside him. You may have guessed, but that last story is actually mine. That was my experience holding evangelistic meetings with Quiet Hour Ministries. As I humbly undertake the responsibilities of Quiet Hour Ministries CEO, I m so excited that thousands of times all over the world, in cities and even under trees, stories like these are happening by the power of Christ! This is what Quiet Hour Ministries is here for! In the end, it s all about Jesus and people. Whether sitting under a tree, walking a city street or pondering an opportunity. Whether learning about Jesus for the first time or sharing the grace they received long ago. It is all about Jesus and people, sharing saving grace. Randy Bates is CEO of Quiet Hour Ministries. 8 All a Part of God s Family A report from our Malaysia evangelism by Mary Ann Roberts LookiNG back, it can be so amazing to see God work. I feel that amazement as I think about our time in Malaysia. Meeting our group for the first time in the lobby of a hotel in Kota Kinabalu, I could see that God had carefully assembled this group to carry out His purposes in East Malaysia. They came from many nations: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Australia, the Philippines, Jamaica and the United States. This group was special in many ways, made up of people dependent upon God. They had unparalleled spirit and dedication. Despite our different backgrounds we found a unity I had never experienced before in any place. Leaving Kota Kinabalu, our small caravan of vehicles headed north toward the tip of the island of Borneo. Our destination was the town of Kudat in the region of Sabah in east Malaysia. After three-plus hours, we arrived at our lodge, which was certainly an unusual place. The Maranjak Lodge was a longhouse in the traditional style of local Rungus people. Tucked off a winding road deep in the mountains, the lodge was built mostly of bamboo with a thatched roof. We shared small rooms and slept on mattresses on the floor, each covered by a mosquito net. I mention all this only because I think our stay at this place was providential. We were in a predominantly Muslim country. Even though Malaysia is a multi-ethnic nation, the Malay people group is, by constitutional definition, Muslim believers. Christians are definitely a minority. Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus make up almost 80 percent of the total population, whereas Christians add up to around only 9 percent. The spread of the gospel faces some real challenges in Malaysia. But the primitive lodge was proved to be perfect for reaching Pastor Franz Krakolinig preparing a sermon. ECHOES SPRING

Maylaysia Report The Maranjack Lodge longhouse where our team shared worships and Bible studies with many local people and tourists. people with our message and inviting them to our meetings. The Adventist churches in Malaysia cannot advertise meetings or hold them in a public place because of religious restrictions. Most of the churches in the district were small and isolated in the rain forest or palm oil plantations. Local outreach is very dependent on friendship evangelism. Maranjack Lodge happened to be a popular stopover for tourists who wanted to sample a bit of the old way of Rungus people. Could it be that God placed all these visitors with us under one roof for a reason? Franz Krakolinig, our congenial Austrian pastor, knew no strangers. He represented Jesus to all he met with wonderful kindness and concern. Every morning we met together for worship, discussion and prayer. Since there was no private place where we could meet, we used a common area a sort of corridor which joined two longhouses. It was very much in the open, directly in the pathway of any tourists who might walk through. But it was the only place with a bamboo sitting area built into the wall. Therefore we used it. And God brought us all kinds of people. We would interrupt our worship and talk to these people, sharing our faith in a friendly way. We invited many of them to sit and worship with us. And they were happy to join us. We loved these conversations. We prayed for these people. We gave away many local-language Bibles and Steps to Christ books. All kinds of people were reached in this way. Chinese students on vacation sat with us and read from Bibles in English. We gave each of them a Bible. Malaysians stopped to talk with us and ask questions. We gave some of them small books which could be concealed. Many students of all ages came and worshipped with us. One day, as an articulate, middle-aged woman walked by she was greeted by Franz. She asked about us and what we were doing. So of course we told her our mission. It turned out she was a Muslim believer. We all enjoyed a long, very pleasant discussion. One of our team, Alberto Rosenthal, has an extensive knowledge of Islam and of the Koran and he was able to talk to this woman in a meaningful way. We also connected on some of the common lifestyle beliefs shared by Adventists and Muslims. She did not want to leave our group that day, even after spending a lot of time with us. The seed was sown. When I asked, she shared with us that she is an academic dean at a major Middle Eastern university. Of course we also were there to do evangelistic meetings. We held meetings at six different churches. From the very beginning we found some serious challenges, but knowing that God can solve every problem, we prayed and prayed. In fact we spent hours on our knees together praying for guidance at our meetings. God heard our prayers! When our meetings began, we all seemed to have the same problem: a sort of chaos during the meeting with people talking and children running around. We realized that the people weren t sure what to do in church. (800) SPRING 2012 ECHOES

After all, it was a non-christian nation and few attendees had any experience in a church. So we talked about lifestyles and about ways to worship God in church. We spoke of the sacredness of meeting with God no matter what the venue. We became friends with our attendees, eating with them and talking a lot with them. The powerful collective faith of our group demonstrated just how much can be accomplished by a few people who put their lives and work totally in the hands of God. One of our team, Curt Shearer, asked himself before the trip was over, How can I serve these people? He had fallen in love with the special people of Sabah. He saw firsthand how medical missionary work could reach people who could not be reached in any other way. Curt plans to return to Sabah after some training as a health worker. For him, everything seemed to fall in place for his life. All of us are praying for Curt. And then there s Hanti, my translator. On the final Sabbath she approached Curt and me with a request for prayer. During the final Sabbath we were thrilled to baptize 104 precious people! Hanti told us of her desire to have a second child. Her previous pregnancy had ended in miscarriage and she had wanted a second child for a long time. Curt and I put our arms around her and both of us prayed for God to give her a child. God really does hear us when we pray! Curt and I received an from Hanti about a month after the trip was over. She was now pregnant! Hanti thanked us so much for our special prayer. It s a blessing from God, she wrote, for we had prayed together. Please continue to pray for me and my family. After two weeks of meetings, we had our baptismal service. A total of 104 people were baptized on that final Sabbath. That s an amazing number, given the tiny size and remote locations of some of the local churches. God richly blessed our efforts. We cannot yet see how the seeds we planted in the northernmost part of Borneo will bear fruit for the kingdom. But we are excited by the many stories of God s leading and arranging opportunities for people to learn about Him. By the end of the two plus weeks, our team all felt that it was no longer the Malaysians ( them ) and the visitors ( us ). All of us were a singular we. We were all members of the same worldwide remnant church, truly brothers and sisters charged with the responsibility of taking God s final message to the whole world. What joy to be a part of this task! Yes, it is a daunting task. But God is responsible for seeing it through and all of us can join Him! Our prayers, our giving of ourselves and our offerings are all sweetly acceptable to God. No one is too young or too old, too rich or too poor. We are all a part of God s family as we work together for our common goal: to see the return of Jesus! Four people who came forward for baptism during the meetings. 12 Surrendered to God One volunteer s experience leading evangelistic meetings in CosTA RICA by Sarah Nadarajan I wasn t sure what to expect on my very first mission trip. Though I was headed to Costa Rica for the purpose of presenting an evangelistic series, the beautiful sights and sounds of experiencing a new country were very exciting! Sarah Nadarajan preaching in Costa Rica. In the fall of 2009, my local church had hosted an evangelistic campaign, in which my friend and I co-preached a sermon on baptism. Back then, I was terrified at the thought of preaching, but by the grace of God, He pulled me through. After gaining more experience in preaching, I became too comfortable in my abilities. Thankfully, God had a few surprises for me on the opening night of our evangelistic meetings in Siquirres, Costa Rica. During the delivery of my sermon that first evening, there were no magical moments, no powerful preaching or enthusiastic emotions exhibited. I was just a girl from the United States who had failed to connect with the congregation. Though I thought I knew all the tricks in delivering a moving presentation, none of those skills seemed to be present. I tried to engage the audience, but they responded with blank stares. I felt like a failure. I asked myself, Why should thoughts of failure arise when I am doing the Lord s work? In the festivities of a new experience, I lost sight of where my focus should be placed. I never claimed to be a preacher, but I had never fully consecrated myself to the work. So that night in my hotel room, I surrendered my will to God. Furthermore, I asked some other team members for tips on how to better relate to the congregation. They graciously reminded me that I was not in the United States; I was preaching as though I was in front of an American audience, rather than a Costa Rican audience. The next morning, I was reluctant to preach. However, I decided that I wasn t going to be the one preaching because God was going to preach through me. What a difference that mindset made! The sermon went so much better and was well received. I felt a burden roll off my soul. For the rest of the series, I was constantly reminded that I needed to depend on God. At the end of the series, we were blessed with four baptisms! I believe that God sent me to Costa Rica not only to preach an evangelistic series, but to diffuse the love of Christ into the hearts of those who would listen. God had a plan for me and He has one for you as well. Sarah Nadarajan is a student at Southwestern Adventist University and was part of our 2011 evangelism mission trip to Costa Rica. 14 OutreACH in the Most Challenging Places by John Mall and Steve Hamstra A special report FROM our evangelism in Sri Lanka, pakistan and the United ARAb emirates Umesh was facing the biggest crisis of his life. A lifelong Buddhist, Umesh had some time ago married a Christian woman. Umesh and his wife after his baptism. That Umesh s wife wasn t Buddhist created painful tension within his family who, like most people in Sri Lanka, are Buddhist. Recently, this tension had culminated in an ultimatum: get a divorce or leave the family home. As he tried to reconcile the situation, his family followed through on their threat. Umesh and his wife were thrown out of the family home. Without the support of his family, Umesh and his wife now had no income and no place to live. Overwhelmed by hopelessness, he decided to get a divorce. Then something happened he didn t expect. Umesh received a visit from a team of gospel workers from Quiet Hour Ministries. They were offering Bible studies in preparation for meetings near his home in Sri Lanka and had been told of the situation Umesh faced. After the first visit, Umesh agreed to begin Bible studies. As his heart was touched by the Word of God, Umesh soon began attending the local Seventh-day Adventist Church. When the Quiet Hour Ministries evangelistic meetings began, Umesh was a regular attendee. And he spent many hours talking to the volunteer evangelists and going over the teachings of the Bible. At the end of one of the meetings, Umesh said he was ready to begin a new life in Christ and be baptized! When the meetings came to a close, Umesh and 16 other precious people were baptized. He is now an active member of the Negombo Adventist Church in Sri Lanka. And though his family has forsaken him, Umesh ECHOES SPRING

Sri Lanka, UAE & Pakistan Report has found a new family in the church community. The Sri Lanka evangelistic meetings were part of a larger Quiet Hour Ministries evangelistic effort that also included Dubai and Pakistan. While these countries offer unique and sometimes challenging environments for outreach, we saw God s tremendous blessing as our teams shared the message of His saving grace through meetings at seven sites. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), our team held meetings at locations in three of the nation s states: Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. Laws within the UAE permit our meetings to be held among the large population of immigrants working in the nation. Interest in the Adventist Church has been steadily growing in the UAE immigrant communities and our meetings saw some 100 to 200 non-adventists attend at each site. This resulted in a large number of individual Bible studies as well. With interest in the Bible and Adventist teachings increasing, our team was able to distribute hundreds of Bibles to those requesting studies during the UAE meetings. One of the highlights from our UAE meetings was when Pastor Sohail, who leads a local non-adventist congregation, came forward and requested to join the Adventist Church! Pastor Sohail carries considerable influence in the local immigrant community. Through him God has opened a door to a greatly expanded outreach in the UAE. In Pakistan our meetings were held in three cities: Karachi, Lahore and Farooqabad. Despite the unstable security situation in Pakistan, the Lord blessed our team with safety and there was no disruption to our meetings. The Pakistan meetings were very well attended with hundreds of people across the three sites coming to hear the gospel, including more than 400 in Farooqabad and more than 700 in Lahore. Seeing so many non-adventists attending was very encouraging. There were even pastors from other area congregations who came to hear the message! In addition there was also extensive distribution of locallanguage Bibles both at the meetings A baptism in Sri Lanka. and through door-to-door visits by gospel workers. Seminars were also held during the day for those interested in learning even more about Adventist teachings. We are very encouraged to see the gospel still going forward in Pakistan despite challenges from current events. In fact, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and UAE are all at the center of tremendous changes taking place in our world. Yet God is opening doors for the sharing of the gospel even in these places. We were blessed to share God s saving grace with more than 5,000 over the course of our meetings. And seeing God work even after the meetings has been amazing. In Sri Lanka alone, more than 30 people have been baptized as a result of follow up work after our meetings! Thank you so much for making this outreach possible. Your prayers and gifts are what make this worldwide evangelism possible, reaching even to some of the most challenging places on earth. 16 God s Abundant Blessings A look back AT Quiet Hour Ministries 75 years by Steve Hamstra With hands trembling so bad he could barely hold his Bible, on July 7, 1937, Pastor J.L. Tucker delivered the very first radiobroadcast of The Quiet Hour. A live radiobroadcast of The Quiet Hour in San Francisco, California. Little could he imagine then that today, 75 years later, Quiet Hour Ministries would be an international evangelism organization that has reached more than 135 countries! Our beginning was almost by chance, except in God s eyes. In 1937 J.L. Tucker was offered leftover airtime on radio station KEX in Portland, Oregon. After consulting with Seventh-day Adventist radio pioneer H.M.S. Richards, Pastor Tucker agreed to present a live devotional radio program. So it was that on Wednesday, July 7, The Quiet Hour was born! God abundantly blessed the young ministry. Soon the broadcasts grew from three times a week to daily. Then twice daily! In 1943 Pastor Tucker accepted a call to minister in the Bay Area of California. And he took his successful radio outreach with him. The ministry would soon be a pioneering presence on a new medium television! In 1949 the very first Quiet Hour television program was broadcast live on station KGO in San Francisco, California. However our first foray into television would last just from 1949 to In 1954 the ministry moved to Berrien Springs, Michigan, where Pastor Tucker had accepted a call to be senior pastor at Pioneer Memorial Church. It was in Michigan that Quiet Hour Ministries was formally incorporated and began to undertake a nationwide expansion of The Quiet Hour radiobroadcasts. These critical steps laid the groundwork for a rapid expansion that was right around the corner! With Pastor J.L. Tucker s retirement from an active pastorate in 1959, Quiet Hour Ministries moved to Redlands, California, where we ve been headquartered ever since. Now the ministry really began to grow. Just 10 years later our radiobroadcasts were on 125 stations in the United States and also aired on various stations around the world. J.L. s son, Pastor LaVerne Tucker, joined our ministry full-time as associate director in One year earlier, LaVerne and his wife Alma were instrumental in establishing a re-entry into television ministry with the introduction of the Search telecast, which aired from 1970 to J.L. Tucker and The Quiet Hour quartet broadcasting live from the KGO television studio in San Francisco. It was also during these years that we developed the Way of Life Bible course, a correspondence Bible study program that has helped thousands of people learn the precious message of God s saving grace. But perhaps most significantly, it was during this era that Quiet Hour Ministries expanded into overseas evangelism and mission work. While Quiet Hour Ministries had been ECHOES SPRING

75th anniversary special feature LaVerne Tucker preaching during an evangelistic meeting in Papua New Guinea. supporting overseas mission work since 1953 mostly in Papua New Guinea in the 1960s this element of our ministry saw significant expansion. Our first jungle church was built in Tanzania in Our first mission airplane was sent to Papua New Guinea in Over the next 10 years we were blessed to send some 26 airplanes into the mission field! And today that number stands at 52 mission airplanes. Providing motorcycles for missionary pastors another key mission project was launched in Since that time we ve sped the spread of the gospel by providing hundreds of motorcycles to mission fields around the world. But it would be the introduction of overseas evangelistic meetings that would truly open the door to our ministry s future. In 1973 Pastor LaVerne Tucker led the very first Quiet Hour Ministries international evangelistic meetings, proclaiming the gospel message at 13 different sites in Africa. This was followed by a massive 92-site program of evangelistic series in India in With doors opening for evangelism around the world, this special part of our outreach saw tremendous growth. Pastor LaVerne and Alma Tucker were instrumental in building up the worldwide evangelistic work of Quiet Hour Ministries, personally leading numerous international efforts. Highlights from our nearly 40 years of international evangelism include our 1986 evangelistic meetings in Goroka, Papua New Guinea, where at just one site more than 14,000 people came to hear the gospel! Another highpoint was sending evangelism teams into Russia just months after the fall of the Soviet Union. These evangelism teams helped plant churches in areas where there had been no Seventhday Adventist presence whatsoever. Then there s one of the most amazing moments in all of our international evangelism, the baptism of more than 6,000 people in a single day during our meetings in Bacolod, Philippines in In 1993 Pastor Bill Tucker, LaVerne s son and J.L. s grandson, became president and speaker of Quiet Hour Ministries. Pastor Bill had joined the organization in 1980 and had been an important part of our evangelistic work since that time. In the 1990s and early 2000s, we further expanded our evangelism program to include volunteer-based mission trips sending teams of laypeople into the mission field to hold evangelistic meetings, providing a unique firsthand opportunity for everyone to be involved in worldwide evangelism. Pastor Bill and his wife Jackie also introduced the Windows of Hope television program. The Tucker family recording a Quiet Hour radio program in the 1970s. From left, Jackie, Bill, Alma, J.L. and LaVerne Tucker. The Lord truly has blessed Quiet Hour Ministries. Through three generations of dedicated leadership from J.L. Tucker, to his son LaVerne, to his son Bill God has guided this ministry across 75 years of active service. Looking ahead, there s so much of the great gospel commission yet to fulfill. But looking back, we can see the hand of God all along, opening doors for outreach. And encouraged by seeing His many blessings, we know He s leading us forward to still greater work as we win souls for His kingdom! 18 Blessed By God for a Special Work As Quiet Hour Ministries celebrates its 75 th anniversary, we praise God for the many milestones and blessings over the years. And in recounting these many memories, there s no one better than Alma Tucker. For more than 65 years Alma has been closely involved with our ministry. She s the widow of former president and speaker LaVerne Tucker, mother of current president and speaker Bill Tucker, a longtime employee and now a member of our Advisory Council. Alma recently sat down with Steve Hamstra, our Echoes editor, to share some of the many stories from her decades of service to Quiet Hour Ministries. Steve: Tell me about Quiet Hour Ministries in its early days. Alma: Well, it was very much a radiobroadcast ministry in those days. I first became involved through my husband, who had been vice president ever since the ministry was incorporated. Then I got deeply involved when we were called to help pastor the Grand Avenue Seventh-day Adventist Church in Oakland, California, where LaVerne s father, J.L. Tucker, was senior pastor. We were in our mid-20s at the time. The ministry s headquarters were in downtown Oakland. There was a large reading room where people could read Christian books and literature or Alma and LaVerne Tucker (second from right and far right, respectively) during a taping of the Search telecast. Alma and LaVerne Tucker singing during an evangelistic meeting in the Philippines. talk with Ida Tucker, J.L. s wife, who was in charge of the place and always there. Many people would come to our reading room after hearing the radio program. And there were quite a few who just came in off the street as well. I volunteered to be first tenor in the ministry quartet and LaVerne sang bass. We would sing during the daily radiobroadcasts. The broadcasts were all live in those days, so we d practice the program at our house and then head down to the station. Quiet Hour Ministries was an early pioneer in television ministry. How did that come about? KGO, the radio station we were on, expanded into television broadcasting in And they offered us a primetime slot on Saturday nights. J.L. at first wanted to do just radio, but after some persuasion agreed to the television program as well. LaVerne wrote the scripts and planned each detail. And our quartet provided the music for each 30-minute live program. Before each broadcast, KGO gave us 30 minutes to practice on set before going live. We had talented painters and other artists to make props, backdrops and other things to illustrate the messages we were sharing. The station staff called our program their extravaganza. ECHOES SPRING

75th anniversary special feature The radio and television broadcasts really opened the way for a lot of outreach. Every Sabbath more than 100 visitors would attend the Grand Avenue church because they had been invited through our programs and wanted to hear and meet the speakers in person. What got Quiet Hour Ministries started in overseas mission work? J.L. and LaVerne took a world missions tour in 1953, paid for by a radio listener. They visited multiple places that were just then being reached with the gospel. On that trip they really saw the great mission needs and wanted to do something about it thus raising money for missions began. What were some key developments that saw our overseas work really expand? LaVerne and I were blessed to lead many, many evangelistic series around the world through Quiet Hour Ministries. One of the keys to seeing that work expand was to closely integrate health ministry into the program. So we had health expos and really promoted the health message. It generated lots of interest in the community and helped us connect with people who otherwise probably wouldn t have come to the meetings. One of our first evangelistic series with a full health expo was in Goroka, Papua New Guinea. Earlier evangelistic meetings had been held in the small church with poor attendance. So we purchased a large blue tent and set it up on the football field. Our health expo booths were set up around the perimeter of the tent. There were only 17,000 people in the local area, so the mission leaders were apprehensive about meeting attendance. Thousands of people packing the football field to hear the gospel at our evangelistic meetings in Goroka, Papua New Guinea. We were eating supper before the first meeting when someone came up and excitedly told us, The tent is full! By the closing Sabbath there were more than 14,000 people sitting all over the football field. Having the health ministry aspect and the meetings at an outside location as much as possible became a very successful model that we did in other areas of the world as well. Our health expos were always tailored to the local culture and language. What s one of your favorite stories from your overseas evangelistic meetings? Our first time holding meetings in Russia in We were there when the coup happened. It was just a week into our meetings in Arkhangelsk and the auditorium was packed nightly. Voice of America broadcasts told us to leave the country right away. So we went back to the place where we were staying and LaVerne told everyone on our team, We ve been told by Voice of America that we must go home. As we kneel for prayer, each of you ask God to impress you what to do. So we knelt and prayed. And when we were done we each said what we felt impressed by God to do. Everyone said to stay! The local people were so thrilled that we stayed and didn t leave. The mayor even personally assured us that he would provide security for the entire time we were there! One young man in Arkhangelsk had a rock band. It seemed like his hair was a different color every night. He barely knew any English. All he could say in English was Hey man, that s crazy! When we visited Arkhangelsk years later, he met our plane and we had to look twice to recognize him. He told us he was baptized about six months after our meetings ended. Also he said he was now helping with church work! We saw lives changed like that wherever we held meetings. It s so exciting to see how God s message of love and salvation opens a whole new life for people! How is Quiet Hour Ministries different now from when you first joined us? It s a lot different now! And some of the differences I really miss. But this has been God s ministry from the start so He s been leading! It s exciting to see all these groups of young people, whole families and others doing evangelism in many different countries. So many are now involved instead of just my husband and our team. Thousands are responding to the good news of salvation and a soon coming Savior! (800) SPRING 2012 ECHOES
