The Order for the Worship of God The Lord s Day June 11, :15 a.m. Reflection In the Bible, wisdom, when used of God and persons, always carries a strong moral connotation. It is conceived as being pure, loving, and good. Wisdom, among other things, is the ability to devise perfect ends and to achieve those ends by the most perfect means. It sees the end from the beginning, so there can be no need to guess or conjecture. Wisdom sees everything in focus, each in proper relation to all, and is thus able to work toward predestined goals with flawless precision. God s wisdom exceeds man s wisdom and even man s imagination. God brings about what He has promised in ways we could never imagine or even believe if we were told in advance. With the goodness of God to desire our highest welfare, the wisdom of God to plan it, and the power of God to achieve it, what do we lack? Surely we are the most favored of all creatures. A.W. Tozer, The Knowledge of the Holy WE ENTER GOD S PRESENCE WITH THANKSGIVING AND PRAISE The Welcome and Announcements Pastor David Harding The Passing of the Peace We greet one another with the ancient Christian greeting: May the peace of Christ be with you and the response, And also with you. The Call to Worship God Steve Curtiss, Elder Leader: Praise be to the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and power belong to him. With God are wisdom and might; to him belong counsel and understanding. All: For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. from Daniel 2:20; Job 12:13; Proverbs 2:6; Romans 11:36 1

WE REPENT OF OUR SINS AND RECEIVE GOD S MERCY Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. Isaiah 1:18 The Public Confession of Sin Merciful Father in Heaven, You call us to offer our bodies to you as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable in your sight. But, we have disobeyed you and dishonored you in multiple ways. We have misused our eyes by looking for ways to sin. We have misused our mouths by unholy speech and sinful silence. We have misused our hands by being lazy and working against your will. We have misused our feet by walking into sin and away from your commands. We have misused our minds by neglecting the wisdom of your Word. We have misused our hearts by withholding our affections from you. According to your gracious promises in the gospel of your Son, please forgive our many sins against you and others. Amen. Silent Prayers of Confession God s Gracious Promise of Forgiveness in Jesus Christ Colossians 2:13-15 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. 4
O Great God Words and Music by Bob Kauflin O great God of highest heav n, occupy my lowly heart. Own it all and reign supreme, conquer every rebel pow r. Let no vice or sin remain that resists Your holy war. You have loved and purchased me, make me Yours forevermore. I was blinded by my sin, had no ears to hear Your voice, Did not know Your love within, had no taste for heaven s joys. Then Your Spirit gave me life, opened up Your Word to me Through the gospel of Your Son, gave me endless hope and peace Help me now to live a life that s dependent on Your grace. Keep my heart and guard my soul from the evils that I face. You are worthy to be praised with my every thought and deed. O great God of highest heav n glorify Your Name through me. You are worthy to be praised with my every thought and deed. O great God of highest heav n glorify Your Name through me. Parents with children up to age 4 are welcome to take them to the nursery for the remainder of the service. This is optional, as children are welcome to remain with their parents during the sermon. 5
WE HEAR GOD SPEAK IN HIS WORD The Sermon Personal Responsibility and Family Unity Proverbs 6:1-19 (pg in the pew Bible) Dr. David Harding My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, have given your pledge for a stranger, 2if you are snared in the words of your mouth, caught in the words of your mouth, 3then do this, my son, and save yourself, for you have come into the hand of your neighbor: go, hasten, and plead urgently with your neighbor. 4Give your eyes no sleep and your eyelids no slumber; 5save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the hand of the fowler. 6Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. 7Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, 8she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. 9How long will you lie there, O sluggard? 10A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, 11 and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man. 12A worthless person, a wicked man, goes about with crooked speech, 13winks with his eyes, signals [c] with his feet, points with his finger, 14with perverted heart devises evil, continually sowing discord; 15therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly; in a moment he will be broken beyond healing. 16There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to him: 17haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, 19a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers. 6
Sermon Notes The Big Idea: Through the book of Proverbs, God is speaking His wisdom into our lives. In Chapter 6:1-19, he is teaching us about the wisdom of taking personal responsibility for our lives, and pursuing and promoting unity in the family of believers. I. Take Responsibility for Yourselves (1-11) A. In financial matters (1-5) B. In personal diligence (6-11) II. Pursue and Promote Unity Among Believers (12-19) A. Because sowing discord is deadly (12-15) B. Because God hates discord and loves unity (16-19) 7
The Prayers of God s People WE COMMUNE WITH JESUS CHRIST AT HIS TABLE The Invitation to the Lord s Supper We come to the Lord s Supper at the invitation of Jesus Himself, and so we come on His terms. Because The Lord s Supper is a sacrament of Christ s church, all are welcome to partake who are professing faith in Jesus Christ alone for their salvation, and are baptized members in good standing of a Christian church where the gospel is loved and proclaimed. As we receive the bread and wine together, you are encouraged to use the prayers at the bottom of the page to help you commune with Jesus Christ. The Words of Institution The Giving and Receiving of the Bread and the Cup (Please wait until all have been served, so we may eat and drink together) The communion trays contain wine on the inner rings and grape juice on the outer ring. These printed prayers are offered to help you commune with Christ Prayer of Thanks Heavenly Father, Thank you for all that you are, and all that you have done for me, and all you promise to do and be for me in Jesus. Thank you for giving me such a great salvation in him. Thank you for forgiving all my sins, crediting me with his righteousness, and adopting me as your dearly loved child. May I never lose sight of the grace you have so freely given me, and may every area of my life reflect that grace to others. In Jesus powerful name, Amen. Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared to admit, but through your life, death and resurrection, I am more loved and accepted by God than I ever dared to hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and rest in you as my Savior and Lord. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the pioneer and finisher of my faith. Amen. 8
WE RESPOND TO THE GOSPEL WITH SACRIFICIAL GENEROSITY Worshiping God through Our Financial Giving We give our money, joyfully and generously, for the spread of the gospel in our city and around the world. May the Mind of Christ My Savior Words by Kate B. Wilkinson, 1913 May the mind of Christ, my Savior, live in me from day to day, By His love and power controlling all I do and say. May the Word of God dwell richly in my heart from hour to hour, So that all may see I triumph only through His power. May the peace of God my Father rule my life in everything, That I may be calm to comfort sick and sorrowing. May the love of Jesus fill me as the waters fill the sea; Him exalting, self abasing, this is victory. May His beauty rest upon me, as I seek the lost to win, And may they forget the channel, seeing only Him. WE ARE SENT INTO THE WORLD TO LOVE AND OBEY JESUS CHRIST The Benediction Numbers 6:24-26 The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. The Dismissal Let us go from here, having been renewed and equipped by the power of the gospel, to live in the freedom of Christ s wisdom. All: Thanks be to God! Please remain for conversation and refreshments in the fellowship hall. All music used by permission through Christian Copyright Licensing International, #
