1 Mission-Aider Holston Valley Baptist Association March 2013 Volume 129, Issue 6 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. BUT now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. I Corinthians 15:19-20 KJV HALLELUJAH! On February couples from churches in the Holston Valley Baptist Association attended the Annual Bivocational Ministers and Wives Retreat at the Music Road Hotel & Convention Center, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. THOSE ATTENDING: Ron and Margie Grimes (Indian Ridge), Ronnie and Sarah Gilliam (Shepards Chapel), William and Jeanie Truman (Indian Ridge), Danny and Vivian Vaughn (Shepards Chapel), Steve and Beverly Davis (Shepards Chapel), Dean and Alma Buell (Mooresburg), Tecky and Linda Hicks (FBC Surgoinsville), Blake and Melissa Montgomery (Big Creek), José and Carolyn Armenta (Big Creek), Dave and Tina Rossetti (Bass Chapel), and John and Kathie Parrott (FBC Rogersville-Associational Missionary) The Retreat is under the leadership of Ray Gilder (Bivocational/Small Church Specialist, TBC). This year s theme was Renewing Our Hearts to Our Master, to Our Marriage, And to Our Ministry Psalm 51:10.
2 READ Acts 8:26-31 DON T FORGET YOUR OFFERING FOR NORTH AMERICAN MISSIONS! 100% of gifts given to the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering are used to support Southern Baptist missionaries serving in the United States, Canada, and their territories. The offering represents 47 percent of the North American Mission Board s total income. I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. John 10:10 KJV Teaching Guides and Pupil s Packets are available through the Associational Office for doing More Life training in your church. Some More Life Witnessing Pouches are available in the Associational Office. How much will it cost our church to have these resources? The resources are at no cost to your church! The resources are made available to you at no cost because of the giving of churches through the Cooperative Program. Tennessee Baptist Children s Homes is recruiting for a couple to partner with us in serving children at our Kingsport Cottage. This position is a part time position, ideal for a retired couple, working seven days and then off 14 days. It is a salaried position and does include health insurance and sick leave days. The couple would work as a team with the Primary Houseparent Couple and Social Worker. If interested, contact Carl W. Willis, East TN Regional VP, at 9423) or cwillis@tbch4kids.org.
3 Last January at New Life Missionary Baptist Church, Church Hill, during a brainstorming session among the young people about how they could reach out and help the community around them the Cinderella Project was born. Initially the young people had done a project where girls could bring in their prom dresses to sell back into the community. However the Cinderella Project was about giving away FREE prom dresses to girls who were in need in the community! The dresses would be made available to all girls. It was not just an effort to meet the needs of the disadvantaged. NEW LIFE YOUTH (l to r): Alyson Johnson, Rachel Skelton, Savannah Hilton, Lemoure Lane, Morgan Shelton, and Kayla Williams. It would be a labor of love in Christ in the community. This year on Saturday, March 9, was the second year of the young people at New Life hosting the Cinderella Project. At the beginning of January this year information was sent out all across the area asking for donations of dresses, jewelry, etc. that could be used in preparation for proms. One individual brought in over 200 brand new dresses with the tags still attached! Over 550 dresses, countless numbers of shoes, make-up, and jewelry were made available to the community this year! The young people felt so blessed by the outpouring of community support for the project. The young ladies who responded not only received a free dress, but they received the best free gift of all! The New Life youth group was not just interested in giving away free dresses they also wanted to share the gospel with the girls as well. It was nice to meet tangible needs, but the young people knew that people have spiritual needs as well. Resources were used to share the gospel with each person who attended the Cinderella Project, and each girl was given the opportunity to receive a free Bible if she did not have one. Again the youth group was not concerned about income levels when it came to receiving a dress. They simply wanted to touch others with the love of God and help them realize how valuable they are to Him. THE REST OF THE STORY!!! On Saturday, March 9, the New Life Youth Ministry gave away 205 dresses to young ladies in the community, and while sharing the plan of salvation two young ladies trusted Christ as their Savior! The young people praise God for what He has done with this project.
4 HARVEST PLANTS John Parrott, Associational Missionary We were blessed to have Bro. Bobby Welch come to our Holston Valley Baptist Association s Evangelism Rally and challenge the large crowd that was present to become involved in a new initiative called Harvest Plants. The initiative involves a strategy: 1 new plant in one year, winning and baptizing 5 persons and reproducing 1 additional plant. Churches would use small groups to either be a branch plant which is an outgrowth of a Sunday School or small group ministry, a group plant which comes from the church as a whole rather than an existing ministry, or a church plant. This can be done it matters not the size of a church. The cost will be people in our churches who will be willing to get outside the walls of a building and be evangelistic witnesses. Training will be offered in April to assist churches in having leaders equipped to establish plants using the various strategies. Information will be forthcoming on the training. Be sure and watch for the info. HVBA Secretary Appreciation Day Henards Chapel Baptist Church Tuesday, April 2, 2013 / 9:00 AM 3:00 PM THEME: God s Call A great day is being planned for our Church Secretaries and I hope you will take advantage of this training. We try to help you stay up-to-date on things that would otherwise cost you. Please call and make your reservations. We need to know how many will be there so we can have enough materials and enough food. I hope to see you on April 2. Linda Hello Holston Valley Baptists, Moments with the Moderator Do you remember the warning: Beware the Ides of March! So goes the soothsayer s cry in Shakespeare s acclaimed, Julius Caesar. Those words were made famous as a stern warning to Caesar. It was March, 44BC, when a group of conspirators led by two of Caesar s most trusted friends would assassinate him before the Senate. He was warned not to go! Beware the Ides of March, rang through Caesar s halls, but Caesar did not heed the cry. And on the 15 th of March, Julius Caesar met his end with the assassin s knife (23 times to be exact). Julius Caesar wasn t the only one who was warned of impending doom! The disciples, on more than one occasion, warned Jesus not to go to Jerusalem for fear of the Jews; yet, the warning was ignored. Jesus was on a mission. Jesus under-
5 Moments with the Moderator (con t) stood what had to be done. Rather than cowering away from task, rather than running from the warning, Jesus embraced it. He set his face toward the cross. There was work to be done. There was a sacrifice to be made. Time was drawing short. Those same things can be said of us. There is much work yet to be done. The fields are riper now than they were this time last year. And if we are to gather in the harvest it will require great effort upon all of us. Every church, every believer has a great cross to bear. There are sacrifices to be made. Now is not the time to sit back. Now is not the time to make excuses. Time is certainly drawing near. Can you believe that the year is slipping away so quickly? We are already well into March and looking directly at Easter. The warnings are all around us. The signs all point to the coming of our Lord. We must work while there is still light. Darkness is falling, and there is coming a time when no one can work. So, if there can be anything said of us, let it be said that we were faithful with what God has entrusted to us. If there is a warning that we all need to heed this March as we celebrate the Resurrection of Easter, it is the warning of the Apostle Paul; Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful (I Corinthians 4:1-2). Working Together, Pastor Andy DON T FORGET! 6 6 Hawkins County Pregnancy HELP Center Launched At the March Executive Board Meeting Mrs. Pam Jones (wife of Bethel Pastor, Mike Jones) and Mrs. Amanda Vaughn (wife of Wesley Vaughn, Henards Chapel Music Director) shared a presentation concerning a ministry God has placed upon their hearts. They invited the churches of the Holston Valley Baptist Association to partner with them in a Crisis Pregnancy Ministry. In trusting God the ladies have no idea how God will use and expand this ministry. The Crisis Pregnancy Center in the Nolachucky Baptist Association is partnering with them and providing some excellent resources to assist in getting the ministry launched. Initially the ministry will be provided through the Holston Valley Baptist Association s building at 207 Hawkins Street in Rogersville. The Executive Board wholeheartedly approved a partnership with Amanda and Pam through the support of our HVBA churches financially, with supplies, with personnel to help with the ministry, and with our prayers. Churches will be receiving a letter in the near future concerning the ministry, a launch date, and how they can be involved from the very start. If you or a member of a Missions Group in your church would like to talk further with Pam or Amanda concerning this ministry you may call them: Pam Jones ( ) Amanda Vaughn ( They would love to talk with you and come to your church or visit with your WMU or ladies mission group to talk about how the church or group can help with the ministry. 03-Mrs. Jonathan (Jennifer) Rogers...
