Sue Krummel This year First Presbyterian Church is celebrating its 180th anniversary. Imagine all of the lives that have been touched over those years by the ministry of this congregation. There are those who have been members who have celebrated baptisms and confirmation and weddings here and who have mourned the passing of their loved ones. There are those in the community who have benefited from the generosity of the members of this congregation and who have been inspired when they pass by the church building every day. There are people around the world who have been recipients of mission from this church and from our denomination. Like anything that has lasted as long as this church, there have been times when the sanctuary has been full and times, like now, when we have the capacity to welcome many more people on a Sunday morning. We are trying a few things to introduce our congregation to new people and to invite them to be a part of our ministry. One of those attempts to reach out was our Celebration Day Camp on Good Friday. With a little financial help and a few volunteers from other churches, we planned for the day not knowing how many children to expect. We ended up with 55 children and about 15 volunteers-- a full house! There were a few hiccups along the way. We had contracted with Stronghold to provide the staffing for the day and then their program coordinator resigned a week and a half before camp. We had several walk ins on Friday morning whose needs were beyond our capacity to serve them. But, in spite of that, we accomplished our goals. One little girl on her way out said, "We didn't get any candy, but we learned about God." That was a part of our goal; to introduce children to the concept that they are beloved children of God by teaching them the story of Easter. Another part of our goal was to help them to understand that church is a good place to go. A third part of the goal was to help their parents know that there is a church here that is ready to welcome them and their children. Will we ever see those families again? We do not know. But we have done our part by welcoming them and helping them to know that their story and God's story are all part of the same tapestry. Mother, Daughter, Friend Celebration Wednesday, May 3rd Please join us this Wednesday for the annual Mother-Daughter- Friend Celebration! Published author Jan Powelson will give the program. She will talk about books she has written and also about her interest in wild flowers and pictures she has taken. Plan to attend and invite your friends and family. 2 CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GRADUATES! EIGHTH GRADE GRADUATE ALEXANDRA POWELSON GRADUATE ZACH SCHULTZ Zach attended and will graduate from Iowa State University in May. Zach, your church family will keep you in our prayers and wish you much success! PRINCETON HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE LUKE SCHULTZ Luke is the son of Karl and Beth Schultz. His grandparents were Charles and Suzanne Schultz. He has one brother, Seth, and two sisters, Justine and Karlie. Luke was baptized July 11, He completed his confirmation class and joined the church in April, Luke attends Sunday School and has been a very willing and constant help at church. He has been a member and leader of the Puppeterians, has served as greeter, usher, lay leader and also helped with the Christmas programs. He has taken part in our Compassion Child program and Bible School, which he attended and then helped as a leader. Luke has worked at the church clean-up days and donated several items to our church auction, using his welding and carpentry skills. Luke will graduate from High School in May and will attend Blackhawk Jr. College in Kewanee. He has received a Farm Bureau Scholarship. His field of study will be Agro Business or Ag Management. During high school Luke played basketball for three years and was on the tennis team for four years. He served as the co-chairman and Agricultural Specialist on the Technology Club. Not only did Luke's team win at the State level this year, but they recently won the "Teamwork and Collaboration" National Merit Award on April 22nd. A four year member of the High School FFA chapter, he served as Sentinal, Treasurer and Vice President. He participated in and helped organize Soil, Crop and Livestock judging. Luke also took part in public speaking each year, speaking on subjects ranging from GMOs to Ethics in the Live Stock Show Ring. He has been a member of the Open Door 4H club since he was 8 years old and has served as President for the last three years. He has been raising his own flock of purebred Suffolk sheep since he was seven years old. He has shown the sheep at local fairs and the State Fair. One very special accomplishment: He has donated six of his Grand Champion market lambs to three area food pantries. His other 4H projects included welding, wood working and crops. Other events he has been a part of include the Crop Walk, serving as assistant coach for Special Olympics basketball and volunteering at the Special Olympics bowling events. Luke, your church family looks forward to following you in all of your future plans. We will keep you in our prayers and wish you success in college. Alexandra s parents are Brad and Jannifer Powelson and she has one sister, Brenna. Alexandra attends Sunday School and church regularly. She will take part in the Confirmation class in May. She is an important member of our church Puppet ministry. Other ways she has served the church include helping with the Christmas and Compassion Child programs, attending Bible School and now serving as a helper. She was a part of our staff that helped with the Good Friday Celebration Day Camp. Alexandra will graduate in May from Logan Jr. High, where she was regularly named on the Honor Roll. In eighth grade she was a member of the Pom Pon squad. Other activities that she has been involved in outside of school include piano and dance lessons, and 4-H. In her free time you will find Alexandra riding her bike or reading. She also enjoys taking pictures. Alexandra, your church family looks forward to the many things you will accomplish in High School. We will keep you in our prayers. The church is invited to Luke's Graduation party May 20th, 4p at the Schultz family home.
