1 page 1 10/30/2012 HEALING THE BROKEN HEART INTRODUCTION Back in 1988, my first wife April, (now deceased), and I were on our 25 th wedding anniversary in Barbados enjoying one another s company laying on the beach having a good time soaking up the sun and relaxing. I was minding my own business lying on the beach, when, without warning, the Lord said to me YOUR CHURCH IS FULL OF BROKEN HEARTED PEOPLE AND I DON T LIKE IT. I was surprised and didn t know what he was talking about. I said What? Then He said again YOUR CHURCH IS FULL OF BROKEN HEARTED PEOPLE AND I DON T LIKE IT. I said but Lord we are born again, spirit filled, Word people. He said to me the third time I SAID YOUR CHURCH IS FULL OF BROKEN HEARTED PEOPLE AND I DON T LIKE IT. I didn t know what God was talking about. But I got the idea He wanted to do something about it. So, I began to investigate the subject of healing the broken heart and people that taught on it. I began to search for anybody who knew anything about healing broken hearts and found that there were only two people in the United States that ministered in that particular direction. So, I called one and he said he could not come to minister at our church for 2 years. I knew that was unsatisfactory. The other one I then called, who said he could come to our church within a reasonable time, six months. I invited him and he came to minister at our church in March of His name was Rev. Barry Taylor and he ministered along the lines of healing the broken heart for several meetings over 3 days. He did an excellent job of ministering. However, as he was teaching, the Lord started to show me some other realities in the Word of God that needed to be covered relating to healing broken hearts. At his last meeting, Barry prayed with our people; and a number had their broken hearts healed. Some of the insights mentioned here, I gleaned from that brother s ministry; and I am thankful for them. The Holy Ghost showed me other biblical pieces necessary, in addition to what he was teaching, which, if not understood, were going to cause some people trouble. As the brother s ministry of prayer for the healing of broken hearts was proceeding, the Lord said to me I am healing these people of their broken heart tonight as they have asked. But they will return next Sunday with broken hearts because they do not know what they did to get a broken heart. They will go out and do it again and come back next Sunday with another broken heart. Then they will think that it does no good to get a broken heart healed. All that following week, the Lord taught me more about what I needed to know. He taught me directly through the Word and by inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The following Sunday, after Barry finished ministering, I shared what the Lord had shown me, particularly on how not to get a broken heart. Since then, He has been revealing to me, not only how not to get a broken heart but how to get a broken heart healed and keep it healed as well as more things concerning various aspects that relate to healing the broken heart. Over the years since then, I have been ministering this message with people in individual counseling situations one on one, where it was appropriate to do so, and in larger ministry situations. This message has helped many people. Over the years, the Lord has taught me more and more about hearts and broken hearts. In August of 1991, I was privileged to be able to minister this in Aba, Nigeria at Living Word Training Center for Ima Okorie s ministry, and then in November of 1993 I taught it to the people in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, Russia for the people of Pastor Pavel Morosov s church. I have taught this message at the church where I pastor Word Family Church, other churches, in seminars and in prisons. Through all these years, the Holy Spirit has been prompting me to minister this in book form making it available to more of the precious people in the body of

This teaching includes understanding what the heart is, how not to have a broken heart, how one gets a broken heart, the symptoms of a broken heart, how to get a broken heart healed and the whole realm that entails. Now, if you don t have a broken heart, don t get one. And if you do have a broken heart, then I believe God is going to use this teaching to heal you, or possibly you can use this information to help somebody else with a broken heart. I believe that now it is time to share this teaching with all the Body of Christ. So we are making it freely available on the internet as a PDF file to reach the maximum number of people in the shortest amount of time. 3 CHAPTER 1 JESUS IS THE HEALER OF BROKEN HEARTS. page 3 10/30/2012 When Jesus began His earthly ministry as described in Luke chapter 4 verse 18 and 21, He quoted from ISAIAH 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; We see from this verse that it takes an anointing from the Spirit of the Lord to work in all those realms but especially in the healing of the broken heart. If you look in Luke chapter 4 verse 18 you people that have the New International Version and the New American Standard Version, as well as several other versions of the Bible, won t have all of that quotation in the New Testament that is in the Old Testament. But let s look there anyway. LUKE 4:16-18 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. 17And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised (You will notice that as I mentioned earlier, to heal the brokenhearted is missing from some versions of the Bible.) You will notice that in ISAIAH 61:1 and LUKE 4:18 to heal (or bind up) the broken hearted is part of Jesus ministry. Our commission, as the Body of Christ, is the same as Jesus, because He does through us now what He did personally in bodily form on earth. JOHN 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. Well a lot of us have preached the gospel but notice that part of that anointing is to heal the broken hearted. We have not done much of that. Jesus said these awesome words in LUKE 4:20,21 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. Jesus is the fulfillment of ISAIAH 61:1. He is the only one that can heal the broken heart! No one else can heal the broken heart except Jesus. One of the first things that Jesus taught me was that there are only three things you can do with a broken heart 1. You can ignore it! - in which case you will die a slow miserable lonely death of a broken heart. 2. You can harden it! - in which case you will become a mean and nasty person and then die a slow miserable lonely death of a broken heart. 3. You can give it to Jesus to heal it! Then you become the awesome, wonderful person God created you to be blessed and a blessing to others also. If you elect to harden your heart, it will not be healed, but; you will keep the internal pain of a broken heart and things like that suppressed and festering. Then you will also lock your

4 page 4 10/30/2012 spirit in a prison that will keep also locked your recreated spirit that God has created in you. So, that the fullness of God s eternal life will be limited from full expression and eventually you will still have a broken heart. You can let Jesus heal your broken heart and your life will progress with God the way it is supposed to. I want to encourage broken hearted people to bring it to the Lord and let him heal it. But we won t go directly to healing the broken heart because there are some other things that we need to learn first. There are many things which people think heal a broken heart, but do not. These will not heal the broken heart but only cover it temporarily. Following are things that won t heal a broken heart: doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, spouses, children, grandchildren, pastors, friends, a new romance, money, houses, vacations, time (in fact time will make a broken heart worse), books, movies, television, a job, videos, alcohol, drugs, a pet or anything else. None of those things will heal the broken heart. Only Jesus can do it. After studying this and working with the Lord with this for more than 2 decades, I am convinced that most people that are on drugs and alcohol have a broken heart. And they are just trying to do something to cover it up and stop the pain. In fact I ve become more and more convinced that most people on Earth have a broken heart. And that s why Jesus said the spirit of the Lord God is upon me to heal the broken hearted. To me healing the broken heart not only has been a very interesting subject; but, also, I believe it is absolutely essential to a fully mature and victorious walk with the Lord here on earth. We are seeing people be freed from the ravages of a broken heart. I have done one-onone counseling with people on healing the broken heart. I have seen marriages restored as a result of teaching that. I have seen lives brought out of significant problems and victory come to people in Jesus as a result of getting their broken hearts healed. I have ministered this subject in three prisons, and seen prisoners lives revolutionarily changed. To me it is one of the most remarkable things I ve ever seen the Lord do. It takes the Holy Ghost to reveal the word of God. Thank God for the Holy Ghost; because, He shows you so many wonderful things in the Bible. So, let s be open and receive His ministry of the Word of God to us along this line. JOHN 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Now when Jesus said the spirit of the Lord is upon me to heal the broken hearted that means He is the only one who can heal the broken heart. It takes an anointing from God to heal broken hearts and He has that anointing. Looking back to Isaiah chapter 61 and verse one, the Hebrew word for broken is shabar. You can find it in Strong s Exhaustive Concordance in the Hebrew Dictionary section at number It means to break, to destroy, to break in pieces, to break down, to hurt, to tear, to crush, to rend violently, to rupture, to mame, to cripple, or to shatter. That s very descriptive isn t it. there is no small problem, it is a major problem so let us proceed with determination to get broken hearts healed and people free from this destruction.

5 page 5 10/30/2012 CHAPTER 2 WHAT THE HEART ISN'T Now, we will begin to discuss what the heart is and what the broken heart is. If Jesus has the spirit of the Lord upon him to heal the broken heart, and He does, we need to know what a broken heart is. And for most people I ask them what a broken heart is and many people say well it is somebody that is hurt, and that is true they are hurt. Or they say somebody that is devastated, and that also is true. But some people say well I really don t know. So before we look at a broken heart, we need to look at what the heart is. Since I ve been studying this, I have discovered, with the help of the Holy Spirit, that the heart is very identifiable from scripture. Some have said that the heart is the spirit. However, if you study the scriptures carefully you will see that the heart is not the spirit. It is a different thing altogether. First let s discover what the heart is not. Please look at 1 THESSALONIANS 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. This passage declares that man is a three part being, spirit, soul and body. Notice that the word heart is not mentioned here. That is important because the heart is neither spirit, nor soul, nor body. But in order to find out what the heart is, we must eliminate what it isn t by determining from the scriptures what the spirit, soul and body are. I have a diagram that will help us to determine the difference see Figure 1 Diagram of 1 Human Spirit, Soul And Body on the next page. A number of folk believe that the heart is the spirit or that the soul and the spirit are the same. However, if you look at the scriptures closely you will see they are not. I don t care to argue with them. Except, the Bible distinguishes between them as indicated in 1 THESSALONIANS 5:23 whole spirit and soul and body (my underline emphasis added) clearly the and shows they are separate. The Bible uses the word heart in the same verses as the word spirit in a number of different places in the Bible. And some people say the heart is the soul. Well the Bible also uses the word heart in the same verse that the word soul is. If they we the same, both words would not be used together. Also, in both the Greek and Hebrew the words for heart, spirit and soul are different. So, I asked the Holy Spirit to reveal these differences to me. I like to meditate upon things, I like to look at the Word of God, I like to ask the Holy Spirit what He s talking about. 1Enhanced Strong s Lexicon, (Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.) 1995.

6 page 6 10/30/2012 I have learned that the Bible uses words differently than just the way people technically use them, both in our everyday language and in the original Hebrew and Greek languages in which the Bible is written. So when I am not sure what a word means, I always ask the Holy Ghost who inspired the scriptures What does this mean?. Do you know that Jesus said the Holy Spirit will lead you into all truth. JOHN 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. So, when you ask Him, He always answers, not necessarily immediately, but He does answer and lead into all the truth. Thank God for the Holy Ghost. I have learned that if you don t know what God is talking about, you will miss what He is saying. 1 THESSALONIANS 5:23 FUNCTIONS OF THE SOUL BODY 1. INTELLECT - has 2 functions a. To Remember b. To Make Decisions SOUL SPIRIT 2. EMOTIONS - functions as a supersensitive alarm system that is used to alert the intellect that something has changed, either inside of you or outside of you and you may need to make a decision about that change. 3. WILL POWER - functions to keep you doing what you decided to do with your intellect until you get the desired result. FUNCTIONS OF THE SPIRIT 1. INTUITION - functions to give instantaneous knowledge of things never experienced or learned. 2. CONSCIENCE functions to give instantaneous knowledge of right or wrong. 3. 7 page 7 10/30/2012 The 3 main aspects of the human according to 1 THESSALONIANS 5:23 are the spirit, the soul and the body. I believe that is the order of importance in which God places them; because, the spirit is eternal and does not change. That is why it must be born again. The soul also is eternal and accompanies the spirit eternally but is changeable in that it can be renewed. The body is temporary and can die. We are a spirit, we have (possess) a soul and live on this planet (temporarily) in a body. In our discussion, we will approach them in reverse order because it is easier to distinguish them that way. BODY - The body comprises all aspects of our physical being including the brain and the nervous system. If something is physical it belongs to the body. The body is temporary. When it dies, we (our spirit and soul) don't die but the body dies and it eventually decays and disappears, unless preserved in some manner. Some people call the body our earth suit, because that is what keeps us physically alive on the planet earth. When we lose our bodies we leave the planet and go either to heaven, if we are born again at the time of death (or rapture), or to hell if we are not born again. I will not discuss that statement in detail now. That is a whole teaching in itself. For purposes of this discussion, we will accept it as evident truth. The function of the body is to provide a dwelling place for the human spirit and soul while on planet earth. It also allows us (our spirit and soul) to interact with the physical realm. There are beings on this earth that have body only. They are the plant/vegetation realm. They have a body but no soul and no spirit. SOUL - The soul is what we use to control our bodies and to interact with other souls. It receives input from the senses and the spirit to express interactions in the physical and mental realms. We get our words psychiatrist and psychologist from the Greek word psuche or soul. For the human, the soul is eternal and It is comprised of three main functions - intellect, emotions and will power. Following is a cursory explanation of the aspects or functions of the soul: 1. INTELLECT is rather easy to define and understand. The intellect has 2 primary activities - to remember things and to make decisions. If you remember something or make a decision, you use your intellect to do it. That s how IQ (Intelligence Quotient) tests work, to measure the ability of the intellect to remember things and make decisions. 2. EMOTIONS functions as a supersensitive alarm system that is used to alert the intellect that something has changed, either inside of you or outside of you and you may need to make a decision about that change. 3. WILL POWER functions to keep you doing what you decided to do with your intellect until you get the desired result. I must give some explanation about the function of the emotions; because this is a rather new concept to many people, as it was also to me when the Lord first showed it to me. For a number of years, I knew I had emotions but did not like many of them e.g. anger, sadness, hurt, anxiety, fear, agitation, etc. Although, I also, frequently experienced the good emotions as well e.g. happiness, satisfaction, laughter, calmness, elation, excitement, etc. However, I could not see a functional use for any of them although I either disliked them or enjoyed them. Often, they seemed to get in the way of my goals. All I knew was that they were there and would not last long. So, I asked the Lord to take them all away, so that I could serve Him in a more focused manner. For a while I heard no response, so I kept on asking as the Bible said about the persistent widow. Finally, He said to me I cannot take your emotions away from you because I gave them to you for a reason. I said You can t? Why not? What are they for? He said they are a supersensitive alarm system that I gave to you to alert you that something has changed,

8 page 8 10/30/2012 either inside of you or outside of you and that you may need to wake up your intellect in order to make a decision about that change. I finally understood the purpose of the emotion is neither to make me feel good or bad, but rather to alert me of the necessity of possibly making a decision about something that had changed. The emotion itself, either good or bad is not important what is important is to identify the change with the intellect and determine if a decision must be made. Many people, not understanding the purpose of emotions, get so involved with them that they spend most of their life either trying to produce a certain emotion or trying to avoid one. Emotions are temporary, for right now only. Emotions cannot be extended, nor can they be predicted, they are only instantaneous. Although, they can be remembered, you can't make them happen. They are like a thermometer, it can only tell you the current temperature, not the temperature that was nor the temperature that will be. Emotions are designed by God to be transient and can only tell you that a change has occurred. The type of emotion is meaningless. It is interesting but of no real purpose. If you notice in the Bible, emotions are present but not analyzed. A side note, because people try to avoid certain emotions, or try to produce certain emotions, the devil uses that effort to manipulate people into doing what he wants them to do. People know that certain situations will tend to produce certain emotions so they will try to repeatedly get involved in those situations to increase the chances of experiencing the desired emotion. Or alternatively, they will do almost anything to avoid those situations to decreaase the chance of experiencing the unwanted emotion. The devil then uses those emotions to get people to do things so he can control the people. For, example many people will spend thousands of dollars and much time to produce happiness. That is why theme parks and amusement parks are so popular. Alternatively, many people will spend thousands of dollars and much time to avoid depression. That is why visiting psychiatrists, psychotherapists, or counsellors and taking anti-depressant drugs are so popular, not to mention drug addiction and alcoholism. By the way, most drug addicts and alcoholics are suffering from a broken heart and just want to stop suffering the pain of a broken heart. There are many more examples that could be used for the other emotions as well. In any case, the devil uses those motivations to keep people away from doing God's will in their lives or even destroy them. Did you ever wonder why that often when people try to produce an emotion, they get the opposite effect? For example, a family will save up for a vacation at a theme park, the beach or the mountains, whatever, to have fun and happiness, and will spend hundreds or thousands of dollars plus a significant time investment. Then, one or all of them will have a miserable time? Guess who got involved in stealing from the family when they were trying to produce the fun/happiness emotions? We probably spend more of our time and attention on our emotions than on the other functions of the soul. Although, we do spend much time and money trying to get educated which has very little to do with developing our intellect. That is developed by exercising memory and decision making skills. Concerning will power, as soon as the desired result is achieved, the will power turns off in that realm where the desire has been achieved. The will power is very strong for everybody. When people say they are weak willed, it is not a matter of being weak willed, the problem is they have not made a decision. Once they make a decision their will becomes very strong, and it is difficult to move them off of their decision without strong motivations or a new decision. Some of the most obvious manifestations of strong will power is seen in people who determinedly try to convince you that they are weak willed.

9 page 9 10/30/2012 There are beings on this earth that have body and soul but no spirit. They belong to the animal realm. Both their body and soul are temporary. They are not eternal beings as we are. SPIRIT - The spirit is what comes from God and gives us the ability to interact with other spirits in the spirit realm. HEBREWS 12:9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? The spirit is eternal and exists separate from the body and the soul. However, the soul always accompanies the spirit, even after death. Where the spirit goes, so goes the soul, both exist after the body dies. MATTHEW 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Psychiatrists and psychologists have no knowledge of the spirit. They know there is something more than the soul but they are not sure what it is. They call it the id, or the subconscious or the un-conscious. Only through God and the Bible scriptures can a person know the realities of the spirit. Spirit is what gives us the ability to speak a language and to conceptualize ideas and be creative. The spirit has 3 functions as can be seen in the diagram of Figure 1. Following is a cursory explanation of the aspects or functions of the spirit : 1. INTUITION - functions to give instantaneous knowledge of things never experienced or learned. With our intuition, we have the ability to perceive spiritual realities and operate out beyond our experience. All revelation from God comes through intuition. 2 TIMOTHY 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: REVELATION 1:10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, 2. CONSCIENCE functions to give instantaneous knowledge of right or wrong. For animals there is no concept of holiness or sin because they have no spirit, no conscience. We however, have those concepts because we have a conscience. Everyone always knows what is spiritually right and wrong (but not necessarily culturally or socially) because they have conscience. ROMANS 2:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) 3. FELLOWSHIP - functions to give harmonious interaction with other spirits. We can fellowship with God, other humans and if we want to even evil spirits. But because they have no spirit, we cannot fellowship with animals or plants. I said all that to say this, the heart is neither the spirit, the soul nor the body. The heart, although not one of the main aspects of the human, is still nevertheless very important to our existence. In the next chapter we will determine what the heart is.
