4 SUNDAY MORNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADULTS BEGIN at 9:45 a.m.! Join one of our five adult classes as they explore a variety of topics, Biblical texts and books. Discussion, prayer and study will challenge you to deepen your faith and understanding of God s word for you today. CROSS WALK is beginning a study of the book by Dr. Lloyd J. Ogilvie, former Chaplain of the United States Senate: Asking God Your Hardest Questions. With warmth and clarity, Ogilvie offers thoughtful, biblical insights to modern questions. He encourages us to honestly ask God anything, because there s no question too big for God and no need too deep for God to meet. Join us for our first conversation, September 11 - IS GOD REALLY IN CONTROL? Helping Hands is studying the Gospel of John. Cornerstone is continuing "Forty Weeks of Purpose" a video study of Rick Warren's A Purpose Driven Life. We have monthly social gatherings and support many causes such as the Gilmer County Food Pantry, Angel Tree, Kids Kottage and The March of Dimes. BYKOTA is doing a study on Christianity s Family Tree, What Other Christians Believe and Why. It is a study by Adam Hamilton who presents a welcoming and inspiring vision of eight Christian denominations and faith traditions and their unique and valuable perspective on the Christian faith. For each group there is a brief history, an outline of major beliefs, and a description of some things we can learn to strengthen our own faith. It is a wonderful study with interesting and positive discussions. Ben Barrett uses the International Sunday School Lessons and will be studying the books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, and Matthew during the months of September through November. Support is needed for frozen food for the freezer in the Ben Barrett Sunday School classroom. You may donate frozen dinners or money to the class and they will purchase the food. This food is given to those in immediate need of something to eat. Sitting down, He called the Twelve and said to them, If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all Mark 9:35 TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR DAILY LIVING 1. Only for today, I will seek to live the day positively without wishing to solve the problems of my life all at once. 2. Only for today, I will not raise my voice; I will be courteous in my behavior; I will not criticize anyone; I will not claim to improve or to discipline anyone except myself. 3. Only for today, I will be happy in the certainty that I was created to be happy, not only in the other world but also in this one. 4. Only for today, I will adapt to my circumstances, without requiring all circumstances to be adapted to my own wishes. 5. Only for today, I will devote 10 minutes of my time to some reading, remembering that just as food is necessary to the life of the body, so reading is necessary to the life of the soul. 6. Only for today, I will do one good deed and not tell anyone about it. 7. Only for today, I will do at least one thing I do not like doing; and if my feelings are hurt, I will make sure that no one notices. 8. Only for today, I will make a plan for myself; I may not follow it to the letter, but I will make it, and I will be on guard against two evils: hastiness and indecision. 9. Only for today, I will firmly believe, despite appearances, that God cares for me as no one else who exists in this world. 10. Only for today, I will have no fears; in particular, I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful and to believe in goodness. Recently, two powerful statistics caught my eye. One said that every 3.6 seconds someone dies from hunger. The second statistic said that 15 million children die from hunger every year. I type this not to make you feel guilty but to make you aware of the situation. On November 11-12th the youth ministry will be participating in a 24 Hour Fast. We will be starting at 12:30 on Friday and ending on Saturday after we participate in the Stop Hunger Now food packaging. We are doing this not to make ourselves feel good, but to become aware. Christians who become aware of the hurting around us can become a powerful agent for change. Pray for us as we take one more step in desiring to be the Hands and Feet of Jesus. 11 WE HAVE A MISSION Welcoming-Worshiping-Nurturing-Sending Why does the church exist? According to Matthew s Gospel, the risen Christ made it clear: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you (28:19-20) Based on this Great Commission, our United Methodist Church has stated its purpose: The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Local churches provide the most significant arena through which disciple-making occurs. So the mission of our congregation is to make disciples. This is a four-fold task.... We could abbreviate our mission as one of welcoming-worshiping-nurturing-sending.
