1 Otey Notes All Parish Breakfast Celebrating God's Abundance Sunday, October 21 Serving begins at 9:20am Catered by Gary Sturgis There will be delicious food, warm fellowship, and a brief message on God's blessings of, and work through, this parish community. Please mark your calendar and respond when you receive the separate invitation. Stewardship 2018 "The one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:6 7 Otey Memorial Parish has much to be thankful for. The love of God through Jesus Christ is manifest here in so many ways! We care for one another in times of dif iculty. We lift our hearts and voices together in worship. We serve the neediest of our neighbors through CAC. We share the Good News of Jesus Christ. We draw closer to God as we learn and re lect together. And we enjoy Christian fellowship that welcomes the wider community. Your Stewardship Committee invites you warmly to share in supporting Otey's important ministries. We are nearing the completion of paying off the loan on 4-year-old Claiborne Parish House and St. Mark's Hall. The loan of $688,000 has a balloon payment (originally to have been $514,000) due in June The good news is that through personal generosity of a number of individuals and families, the size of the inal balloon payment has been reduced to $63,000. Please listen with care to the stewardship message of the coming weeks, and pray that we will continue to grow together in the Christian graces of gratitude and generosity. 2 Trial Sunday Schedule Star ng in September and going through December, Otey's early service will begin at 8:30am (instead of 8:50); Chris an Forma on take place 9:45 10:45am (instead of 10:00am), and the late service will remain at 11:00am. This change was proposed by the Chris an Forma on Commi ee to provide more me for forma on classes and less need to rush between worship and forma on on Sunday mornings. The schedule's effec veness will be evaluated toward the end of the trial period before a decision whether to make it permanent in the new year. Episcopal 101 Are you new to the Episcopal Church? A ending for a while and want to know more? A long me member who would like a refresher course? Episcopal 101 is the course for you! On Sundays at 9:45am, beginning September 9, we will explore Episcopal/Anglican understandings of worship, the Bible, prayer and spirituality, ethics, church history, and more. While this course provides prepara on for Confirma on, Recep on from another denomina on, or Reaffirma on of Bap smal Vows, the only requirement for par cipa on is the desire to learn! To sign up or for more informa on, please contact Rob Lamborn at oteyparishrector@gmail.com. Diocesan wide Prayer Vigil, October 27, 2018 This event will serve two purposes in our diocese: the first is to pray for what is just and right in our community and in the world around us; the second is to unite us as a common body of Chris ans in middle Tennessee. The vigil will be from 9:00 am un l noon at St. Mary s. Rain loca on is Otey Memorial Parish Church. Dance Conservatory Hug Your Pet and Pray for Peace Each October 4 th we celebrate the Feast Day of St. Francis. Many of us have our pets blessed and marvel at St. Francis and his ministry to all living things. We have a couple of hymns accredited to St. Francis. Hymn 400 All Creatures Of Our God and Kings and Hymn 593 Lord Makes Servants of Your Peace. Probably you are more familiar with the Prayer of St. Francis. It was set to music in the 1970s by Sebas an Temple. The tune is simple and quite en cing. The text of the Prayer is as follows: Lord make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love, Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console to be understood, as to understand. To be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned. And it is in dying, that we are born to eternal life. Most Chris ans believe the prayer is indeed the work of 13 th century St. Francis. In fact the prayer is only a century old and first appeared in a French publica on in 1912, in Italian in the Va can newspaper in 1916 and was translated into English in The Italian publica on was made at the order of Pope Benedict XV, in his work for peace during World War I. During World War II, Cardinal Francis Spellman had millions of copies distributed to all New York Catholics to encourage them to pray for peace. Although St. Francis did not write the prayer for his Franciscan Order as we once thought, I am quite confident he would totally support the content of the prayer. The prayer is also included in the prayer sec on of our Prayerbook. I, myself, frequently sing the 70s se ng, Make Me An Instrument Of Thy Peace as I go about my daily work. It is a song that reflects compassion and respect for all human beings. Let us indeed pray for the peace this world need so badly. Happy St. Francis Day! Kathleen Sturgis, Music Director We at Claiborne Parish House get to enjoy the music and joyous faces as we see the Sewanee Dance Conservatory rehearse Monday Thursdays. Page 2

4 Sewanee Children s Center Writes Story The Sewanee Children's Center is ready to have new discoveries, experiences, and adventures with the children! In fact, the children already put their imagina on hat. They created a story and they became pirates! The Adventure to Pirate Island Told by: Tigerwood (A cus) Pirate Az Tox (Aidan) Skull Tooth (Henry) Captain S (Sydney) Pirate Nella (Beatrice) Captain Bones (Cullin) Captain Toot (Julian) Doc Flower (Louisa) Pirate Dirty Dish Water (Sadie) Pirate Isabella (Jane) JoJo (Kate) Unirose Pirate (Suzanna) Esme (Esme) Once upon a me there was a pirate ship and on the ship there was a unicorn and a dolphin statue on the top. There was also an eagle s nest and Ms. Chris e was in it looking for a shark. We started our adventure on Lake Cheston and headed to Pirate Island. As the journey con nues bad storms set in. First it was raining really hard then it turned snowy. We had 10 hours un l we reached Pirate Island. The ship had to turn around, it was heading east instead of west and you have to go west to get to Pirate Island. As we get closer to Pirate Island, we see another ship in the distance. We finally make it to Pirate Island. We found Baldhead Lighthouse. At the top of the lighthouse, we will have a cookout with all the other pirates. On the way back to Lake Cheston, we found another pirate ship. This one we decided to ba le so we raised our Jolly Roger. We found a treasure chest full of gold. Our adventure wasn t over yet, as we enter back to the seas, a big wave flipped the ship over. Luckily the as the waves bounced us around we flipped back the right way. One pirate did get injured but we had a doctor on board. We had a celebra on of all the treasures that was found and snacked on Pirate Booty and gold fish as we sailed into the sunset back to Lake Cheston. Relay for Life Our Church is participating in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life being held in Sewanee. The culminating event of this fund raising effort will be the relay held at Hardee McGee track and field at The University of the South on October 6. The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is the world s largest fundraising event for cancer and serves to fight every cancer in every community. If you are interested in helping us make a contribution to the fight against cancer you may participate in the following ways: 1) You may make a donation to the Otey Parish team. All donations will go to the American Cancer Society. 2) You may become a member of the Otey Parish team. Team members help to plan for the Relay event and seek donations from others in the community who want to help cancer victims or want to support those who have or have had cancer. 3) You may participate in the walking relay that takes place as a part of the festivities occurring on October 6 from 4 9 PM. The Relay is a symbol of our support for cancer victims and their families and friends. We are also acknowledging our support of the research that is being done to combat this disease. If you want to join our effort to make a difference, please get in touch with Doug Seiters at dseiters@sewanee.edu (phone ) or Tom Phelpsat tpphelps52@gmail.com (phone ). Like a Little Child Like a Li le Child: Age Appropriate Worship for Kids On October 28, parents of young children are invited to coffee and conversa on during the Sunday school me. We will con nue some of the themes we began exploring last year. This interac ve teaching series is an extension of the ongoing conversa on with the parents of our youngest children. We have been exploring together how to increase the comfort and par cipa on of everyone who gathers on Sunday morning. This series will focus on the Eucharist itself, since many of our young children play in the nursery un l this part of the service. Children who a end Godly Play (ages 2 through 5 th grade) will gather in their usual Sunday school room and join the Godly Play circle for a story. During the work me (approx. 10:15), the children will walk to the church with the parents to learn more about worship together. Otey Office and Community Ac on Commi ee will be closed Monday, October 8 for Columbus Day Good coffee is like friendship: rich, warm, and strong! 6 Tuesday Morning The Godly Play Parents Morning Out crew has enjoyed the beau ful September weather. We explore the playground each morning, then sit in a circle for a Godly Play story. We are currently playing with the Parables of Jesus. Today we made thumb print Spider Crossing signs to keep our arachnid friends and our faces clear! Most days we work with play dough, pine cones, smooth rocks, or Godly Play materials. We finish our me together with running games, nursery rhymes, and songs in St. Mark s Hall. The children are learning to play together rather as well as parallel. They are learning group skills like making a line and a circle, following instruc ons, and taking turns. They are becoming familiar with stories by and about Jesus, and learning the language of Chris anity. The Montessori based program also gives a lot of space for crea vity and self direc on. We have a great group of children, and s ll room for a few more. Jeannie Babb Director of Chris an Forma on Pilgrimage to Montgomery Eleven amazing pilgrims, all members or friends of Otey Memorial Parish, managed to find their way to the van by 5:50 a.m. for the ride to Montgomery. Jeannie Babb gave us a start off prayer for our day and Lisa Rung climbed into the driver s seat for a seemingly effortless day of good driving. In Montgomery, we joined about 40 others from the Nashville parishes and began our personal visits to the Na onal Memorial for Peace and Jus ce and The Legacy Museum. The memorial is very powerful in its stark simplicity hundreds of columns gave lis ngs of the lynchings that took place in the predominantly southern states from The names included women and children. The sheer number of these coffin shaped columns made us numb and silent. We then walked to the Riverfront for a huge box lunch that the Diocese provided. A erwards we moved on to The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarcera on. At first the museum seemed quite large. It proved to be quite small in size, but so packed with the stories and pictures of racial injus ce that we were overwhelmed by its magnitude. As we le to meet our slowly gathering group, none of us wanted to talk, so we were quiet wai ng for our trip home. We stopped at St. Stephen s Church in Birmingham, conveniently located just off the interstate, for a prearranged supper with the other pilgrims from the Diocese of Tennessee, and then slowly wended our way back to Otey, arriving about 10:00 p.m. Sofia Wentz notes that on the return trip, there was some cha er, some French music, but s ll not much cha ng about the Memorial itself. She called the shared experience silencing. It was a very full day which le us much to think about and pray over. All the pilgrims wish to express gra tude to Otey Memorial Parish, the Diocese of Tennessee, and the Beloved Community: Commission for Racial Reconcilia on for arranging this poignant and important pilgrimage. A reflection by Anne Griffin Page 6

7 Otey Offers Screening of the Movie 13th Otey offers screening of the movie 13th 7:30pm, October 15, 2018, at the Sewanee Union Theatre One out of every seventeen white males will spend me in jail during his life me. For black men, the odds are 1 in 3. The movie 13th: From Slave to Criminal with One Amendment examines how the very amendment that should have forever ended slavery, instead created a loophole to con nue slavery through the mass incarcera on of people of color. The Beloved Community On October 15th at 7:30 pm Otey Memorial Parish will host a free Sewanee Union Theatre screening of the awardwinning movie. Director Ava DuVernay interlaces archival footage with exposi on and interviews with such personali es as Melina Abdullah, Michelle Alexander, and Cory Booker. The movie will be followed by a talk back session with the Beloved Community: Commission for Racial Reconcilia on of the Diocese of Tennessee. And as usual, the SUT will be selling delicious movie popcorn and so drinks for just a dollar. Everyone in the community is encouraged to a end this important event.
