1 St. Philip s Episcopal Church St. Philip s Episcopal Church 118 W. Poplar St. Harrodsburg, KY St. Philip s Connection October 2017 (859) saintphilip@bellsouth.net Rocked by the Spirit! On Sunday, September 10 St. Philip s started something new: we worshiped together with St. Peter AME (African Methodist Episcopal) Church. The morning began informally over cups of coffee in the basement while both congregations arrived and began to fill the worship space. A good number from each church came, making the final number of worshipers somewhere between 80 90, including a large number of children and young people. The Spirited worship began at with opening remarks by two of the elders of St. Peter. This was followed immediately with music that filled the sanctuary and had members of both congregations standing on their feet and swaying in worship. For the next two hours Episcopalians and Methodists prayed, preached, sang, and danced in joyfilled, Spirit-led worship that was a delight to witness. iphones came out as people took pictures, shot video, and reveled in what God was doing among us! Fr. Peter preached a (comparatively) short sermon on Romans 8: Let us love one another, encouraging both congregations to begin building a relationship by praying for each other. After the sermon, Pastor Jenkins offered some remarks and invited all to come forward for prayer, prompting a number of worshipers (yes, even Episcopalians :) ) to respond to the altar call. Since this Sunday happened to be Pastor Appreciation Sunday at St. Peter, the concluded with Canon Elise Johnstone, Fr. Peter, Senior Warden Jamie Wince, and Verger Barbara Crain presenting Pastor Jenkins with a check from the congregation of St. Philip s. Pastor Jenkins has done a great deal to help revitalize St. Peter, to mentor Fr. Peter, and to begin developing the relationship between our two churches. It was a joy to present him with this gift! An extensive lunch followed, including roast turkey, ham, homemade cake, and many other delicious items. It was clear that St. Peter extended an incredibly full hospitality to us and it was a true & humbling blessing to be so honored! This is a really wonderful foundation on which to continue building a relationship between our two congregations. We look forward to hosting St. Peter s congregation at St. Philip s in the near future! The next is on September 28th at 4:45. Dunn s will be here grilling out hamburgers and hot dogs! The October meal is scheduled for the 26th at 4:45 PM. United Thank Offering Campaign Kicks off September 17th The Episcopal United Thank Offering is a ministry with a 125 year history. It was organized by Episcopal Women who were a prime support of the missionary outreach program of the church. The little blue mite boxes, known affectionately as "Blue Boxes" were utilized to collect prayers and grateful offerings from the women of the church in thanksgiving for the many blessings of this life. Ultimately, the boxes achieved almost iconic status as the symbol of the UTO, United Thank Offering. The UTO has expanded from its beginning as funding for missionary support to become a source of funding for multiple programs including many with international impact. Awards are given to help meet the needs of individual communities and parishes with such things as volunteer run programs, building repair, and renovation. Additionally, funding with a wider scope such as assistance with rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina or construction of water systems in areas of Asia and Africa are among of UTO awards in recent years. The provision of shower facilities for the homeless, and translation of the Book of Common Prayer in to other languages are examples of recent innovative UTO Awards. All parishes are urged to participate by recognizing our blessings and generously contributing our offerings to our Blue Boxes. Subsequently the money collected, the Ingathering, is sent directly to the diocese coordinator and ultimately to the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society of the Episcopal Church, the award granting body. Every Diocese of the Episcopal Church has received at least one UTO Grant. Our own parish, St. Philip's, received a grant when the Parish Hall "carport annex" was enclosed, The monies collected by the United Thank Offering will go to support mission and ministry around the world. The boxes and donation envelopes, along with an informative booklet, are being distributed at church on September 17. St. Philip s Ingathering to collect the boxes is November 19 th. This will be the day to return your Blue Box to church. The Blue Box serves as a visual reminder to offer thanks for our blessings big and small and to acknowledge that all of our gifts come from God and are for the glory of God and the building of God's Kingdom. Thanks to Susanne Sanders for sharing information on August 13th about her trip to The Holy Land
4 ST. PHILIP S EPISCOPAL CHURCH NEWSLETTER PAGE 4 September 8, 2017 Dear Friends, A letter from The Standing Committee of the Diocese of Lexington: I am writing to let you know that I have, with regret, decided to wind down my ministry with you by the end of this year. Family health issues have become a major concern, and I am going to have to take a more active role in providing care. My regret is that I will not be able to walk with you until the end of your bishop election process. I also feel loss in that I have grown quite fond of this diocese and its people, and have truly enjoyed the ministry we have shared. I will, of course, continue to do my best to be fully attentive to your needs until the end of the year. I am even now making a list of to dos that can be accomplished over the next few months. The Standing Committee and I will work hand in hand to provide a smooth transition. We will seek another provisional bishop with the assistance of the Pastoral Office of our Church and will move forward with an election plan which will be in place for approval at our next convention. Please know that I am fully confident in your future. God is clearly at work in your midst, and will continue to provide for your needs. You are all consistently in my prayers, and I feel blessed to be part of your life. Faithfully yours in Christ, +Bruce The Rt. Rev Bruce E. Caldwell, Bishop Provisional of the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington St. Philip s Vendor s Village Booth! St. Philip s booth is still doing! We are averaging $ per month in profit from the booth. Keep the items coming! You may drop items at the Parish Hall on weekdays from 11-2 or call Katie at to schedule a pickup! Thanks for your continued support of this fundraising effort!: During the month of September we are going to move the booth from Vendors' Village in Danville to Rags to Riches in Harrodsburg. This will enable us to take larger items. Some people have furniture and larger items they would like to donate. While you're doing your fall cleaning if you come up on furniture items, as well as nick-nacks, (and yes we will take Christmas items now ) we have the ability to add them to our booth. Happy fall ya'll! Call the church office for more information. On Sunday, September 17th, we pray for students and teachers as they go back to school. Backpack Blessing Prayer Lord, thank you for the unique gifts of every student as they transition into a new school year. Fill each student with fresh enthusiasm and a heart that is excited to learn and grow. Cover them with your enduring love, give them con idence and grace, and equip them with the ability to persevere through trials. Bless their teachers with wisdom, understanding, and a heart to serve, as they embark on the journey together. And may each student know that no matter what comes their way, they have God and the people of St. Philip s to support and guide them. Amen
