Indeed several people I know feel this way about this past year. There have been many losses, illnesses, difficulties, and disappointments. All of this has added up to a point where people are saying, I have had enough. Life certainly feels that way sometimes and it is important to keep a bit of hope in your life when it feels that way. I could go on about how there have also been many good things occur in the past year: births, celebrations, blessings, and new experiences. However, when the scale seems to be tipping more towards the difficult side of things, it is hard to remember all of that, and we tend to focus on what is not going well in our lives. Again, it is important to keep a bit of hope in your life. Hope is a funny thing; it does not seem like much. We hope for things that have not even happened yet they don t even exist yet hope is a powerful thing. We work to bring into being through our faith things we look forward to, or perhaps a change that can make things tolerable. In having faith in that new future we help form it each and every day. We also work with others who share in our hope so we do not do that work alone. So often it feels like we cannot do what needs to be done by ourselves, and perhaps we cannot, but that is why we work and hope with others. By ourselves we are susceptible to many things, but with each other, and with a faith in God, we have a strength that is beyond just ourselves. I do not know what you hope for in this New Year (I certainly have a list already) but whatever it is, hope deeply and work to make that change in the world you seek. Work with others who share in that hope, people who care for you, and people for whom you care. Together as the body of Christ, we can make a difference; we can make a change in our world. Not only will we do this together, but also we do it with God as our guide. May we look beyond whatever sadness or difficulty is weighing on us from the past and look towards the new creation that is breaking forth before us. That is my prayer this coming year for myself and for Beaver Church. Together I know we can indeed make it a Happy New Year for ourselves and each other. 5 Annual 12 th Night Party at Pastor Brian s House Amelia and I would like to invite the church to come to our home on the evening of Friday, January 6 th for our traditional 12 th night party. For those who are not familiar, the eve of Epiphany was traditionally celebrated with a big feast and party. We will be having such a party at our house starting at 7:00PM till 9:00PM. This year we are having it on the 6 th instead of the 5 th, because Friday will be a better night. We will have cake, wassail, and other traditional 12 th night things to nosh on. Bring something to drink or something sweet to share if you wish. Our address is 236 Green St. Dayton, OH It should be a good time, and, who knows, maybe you will be crowned king or queen. Christmas Blessings, Pastor Brian and Amelia 2017 ANNUAL MEETING Our 2017 annual congregation meeting will be held on Sunday, January 15, after worship and our usual carry-in dinner. We will reminisce about activities that occurred in 2016, vote on the budget for 2017, and on the slate of incoming consistory members. Your presence is needed. Your opinions matter. This is your chance to voice your concerns or to give praise for a job well done. Save the date: See you on January 15. Sunday School Starting: January 15 th Our middle and older children s Sunday school classes have been on a winter break while the nursery has continued to meet. We will have the two classes that have been on break start back up on January 15 th. CONGRATULATIONS Sarah Hawkins, daughter of Keith and Barb Hawkins, and Christopher George were married at Beaver Church on Saturday, December 17. The sanctuary was festively decorated for the Christmas season with poinsettias, candles in the windows, colorful bows attached to the pews, and frosty wreaths on the doors. 6 OLD NEWS FROM THE XENIA GAZETTE January 8, 1909 DR. YOCKEY ACCEPTS CHARGE IN KANSAS Will be pastor of Brown Memorial Reformed Church in Wichita, Kansas The Rev. S. B. Yockey has accepted a call to the pastorate of the Brown Memorial Reformed church in Wichita, Kan., in which city he has been for the last few weeks. He has entered upon the duties of his pastorate, and expects to return to Xenia shortly when arrangements will be made by Mrs. Yockey to accompany her husband to the Western city, where they will make their home. The acceptance by Dr. Yockey of the call extended by the Wichita congregation has been known only to a few Xenians, and sincere regret that the new charge will take Dr. Yockey and his lovely wife so far from this city will be felt by hundreds of their friends in Greene County. The Wichita Gazette comments editorially on the acceptance of the pastorate by Dr. Yockey and says in part: Dr. Yockey is not only a learned man but he has a native refinement of ideas that readily impress one with a desire to know him better. His views are broad, as those of all scholars are and there is a visible modesty about him that is at once attractive and impressive. For something like a third of a century, we believe, he has been connected in the capacity of regent or trustee with one of the prominent theological institutions of his church. We welcome Dr. Yockey to Wichita with an intuitively convincing feeling that the coming years of his pastorate will add enormously to our moral spiritual and educational assets; and we congratulate the Brown Memorial church congregation in having made such a fortunate and fitting selection. (Dr. Yockey was pastor of Beaver Church from ) January 12, 1935 At revival services held at Byron Reformed Church, Rev. Alvin Hilgeman of Beaver Reformed Church will speak at Young People s Night service Wednesday evening. His subject will be Christianity, a Way of Life. (Rev. Hilgeman was Beaver Church s pastor from 1931 to 1935.) January 11, 1941 A playlet on Prayers was presented by seven members at a meeting of the Women s Missionary Society of Beaver Reformed Church at the home of Mrs. Grant Miller, Trebein, Thursday afternoon. Those taking part were Mrs. A. C. Renoll, Miss Jessie Miller, Mrs. C. A. Jacobs, Mrs. L. E. Stewart, Miss Elizabeth Ankeney, Mrs. Grant Miller, and Mrs. Raymond Tobias. Mrs. Renoll was program chairman, assisted by Misses Rachel and Nelle Ankeney. Mrs. P. H. Flynn conducted devotions and articles were read by Miss Jessie Miller and Miss Elizabeth Ankeney. Mrs. Lewis Stewart, president, spoke briefly on membership and reports were submitted by Mrs. Flynn, literature secretary and Miss Rachel Ankeney, college secretary. Rev. A. C. Renoll was a guest.
