1 THE TIMES OF EPIPHANY UCC 9365 Clarence Center Rd, Clarence Center, NY (716) Website: Minister: Parson Mark G. Dibelka Home Phone # (716) pastor@epiphanyucc.us Office: 9am - 1pm M-Th April 2016 PARSON S PONDERINGS.....April 2016 From the desk of...parson Mark G. Dibelka Where, oh where, does time go? It has been nearly a year since I joined Epiphany and our life together has been a whirlwind of stuff. Although I ve not been here for a full calendar year, we have gone through the entire church year together and we ve learned things about each other (I ve learned about the Celebration of the Life of the Church, and you ve learned that I prefer the color blue during Advent). Much like any relationship, it is continued discovery that makes life interesting. With the passage through Lent complete, we find ourselves in Eastertide. Just as we have a season to remember the journey taken by Jesus through His spiritual and physical wilderness, we have a season (50 days) to remember and CELEBRATE His resurrection. Most of the time we think of Easter as a single day. A day that might start rather early with a Sunrise Service, continue (in no particular order) into a worship service (or more than one), an Easter Egg hunt, time with family, delicious country cured ham, and chocolate rabbits or crosses. Easter is so much more than this. Easter is the ultimate promise; it is the continuation of Word turned to action that began on Christmas Day. God returned to the world, gave us the the tools to correct the wrongs, to correct how the world had gone off track and, believing we knew best, we executed this radical man who preached love and called to task those who failed to care for their neighbors. Easter is the day that we were informed that death is not the final stop on our journey through time. While our Lord was condemned, God overcame our worst. Our worst: often recognized as sin or selfinterest. In this case, the worst we could do to God was to put the avatar to death. Death, a very human end. God is not bound by human understanding and overcame. God had given us a preview in Bethany at the resurrection of Lazarus, and God had given us a preview in Nain at the resurrection of the widow s son, and God burst forth in full glory from an empty tomb - a tomb that had once held a dead, human, body. Divinity, in a show of extraordinary power, culminated a humble beginning by overcoming the absolute worst that humanity had to give: sin, selfinterest, arrogance, and death. We came into Easter with the idea of divesting certain luxuries and selfindulgence, the better to focus on serving others. We went through Easter Day itself with a light feeling of knowledge that the world had been set right. We are now traveling through the Easter Season with a mandate to make the resurrection worth something. We are born anew and we are a people who have received a promise, an eternal promise that cannot be hindered by anything that our feeble humanity might be able to erect - we have a promise of resurrection. We have the promise of the resurrection. God promised, then did, and will do again. The cross and the tomb are empty! Let this Easter be your time to determine that you will live into that promise and be the risen Christ for all to see. It may be difficult to talk about your faith, but it is very easy to live your faith, so let s journey together and live as though we know we are a redeemed people who have the promise of everlasting life. May the love, peace, and promise of the Risen Lord be with us all. Parson Mark. 2 THE TIMES OF EPIPHANY Page 2 Fellow Members, I want to begin by wishing everyone a very Happy Easter and Lenten season! This is a wonderful time of year to count the blessings we have and to remember that Jesus sacrificed himself for us. It is our responsibility to do His work to serve both Him and our fellow man. I see this in action every time I am at Epiphany. It is a wonderful thing. I also want to give everyone a couple of updates. As a result of our annual meeting votes, Dave and the facilities team scheduled the roofer and contractor for the kitchenette. The roof was completed by 3/13 and the kitchenette will be done by the end of March. No more ceiling dripping in church and our front building will be much more functional. Both things are great to have done for spring and summer season. Please watch for all the great events this spring and hope to see you all soon. God Bless, Scott H Howell - President, Epiphany UCC BUILDING RENTAL Both the Community Outreach Building and our sanctuary are available for rent. If you have an event that is getting too large for you to have at your home...why not consider having it here. There are tables and chairs available and you don t have to worry about the weather. 6 THE TIMES OF EPIPHANY Page 6 Happenings Around Our Conference (as stated in the weekly online editions) Or to read the actual weekly newsletter My Thoughts reprinted from March 9, 2016 This year, I've been doing some re-thinking about Lent. For many, Lent is a 40-day period designated for prayer and drawing closer to God. However, it is often tough for me to get psyched about a "holiday" season that begins with ashes and ends with a tomb. It just has a dark and gloomy kinda feel to it. So I'm often curious about the ways and reasons people choose to observe the Lenten season. Some Christians view Lent as a time to reflect on our human frailties, weaknesses, and shortcomings. Others may choose to give up something they enjoy, like chocolate or social media, as a sacrificial action to identify with Jesus' suffering and sacrifice. If we are choosing to make a sacrifice of time spent on social media or some other activity to commune with God and devote more time to prayer that's great. But what happens when Lent is over? Do we simply go back to our regular routine until next year? I'm curious, if Lent is about drawing closer to God, how does focusing on my weaknesses and skipping my weekly Snickers bar accomplish that? There just doesn't appear to be much joy in our observances. Think about it, we spend nearly 6 weeks commemorating Christ's suffering, passion, and death and only one day celebrating Christ's resurrection. Hmmm??? It's like we enter Lent as if Easter isn't coming. Personally, I prefer to view Lent in light of the Resurrection. I'm not inclined to "park" in my weaknesses and shortcomings for 40 whole days. Instead, I am drawn closer to God when I consider that because of Jesus, my sins are forgiven and in my weakness, I am "made" strong. Isn't that why Jesus came in the first place? Secondly, I prefer to munch on my Oreos and rejoice in knowing that Christ has already made the ultimate sacrifice on my behalf. Now there's something to commemorate. I'm convinced that drawing closer to God is an ongoing, daily process. It is not merely a once a year, seasonal event. We should always be developing a daily practice of prayer, meditation, and/or worship. Doesn't that seem a bit more useful? When you reflect on Jesus' suffering and sacrifice for you, why not consider the suffering of others and instead of giving up something for Lent, why not consider "adding" something that might help alleviate someone else's suffering. Try adding more kindness, or social activism, consider volunteering your time to the local homeless shelter or soup kitchen. This Lenten season, remember that Je- sus suffered so you wouldn't have to. For me, that's the joy in re-thinking Lent in anticipation of the glorious Resurrection. Happy Lent, Rev. Dr. Marsha Williams Associate Conference Minister for Clergy and Authorized Ministry Concerns mwilliams@uccny.org My Thoughts reprinted from March 16, 2016 This isn't going to sound very "springy" or "crocus/ daffolilly", but hey, it is Lent and technically it is still winter (Spring starts next Sunday), and the ice is still on the lakes in Black River/St. Lawrence Association (I saw it yesterday). So one more cold winter thought before Spring arrives! An activity that I loved to do years ago in Maine is called "Lake Walking". Usually between January and March the ice on most large lakes is thick enough to go for long walks over vast stretches of whiteness. (A public safety warning: do not try this at home and always check ice thickness before walking out there!) But I love lake walking. Usually there is a covering of snow on the ice, so it is not at all slippery. And the silence in the middle of a large ice covered lake is unlike anything else. The only sounds are the wind and an occasional deep boom, like a cannon being shot far in the distance. This is my favorite place to pray by listening. These were not times I would recite a laundry list to God, but rather to clear my thoughts enough to listen for the sacred wordlessness to be uttered. At the CREDO event I attended a couple weeks ago in Florida, while I certainly did not go lake walking, I was able to listen for the loud silence of God's utterance to my soul. I was sent off to reflect upon and then listen for a response to two questions: Who am I? And, who am I becoming? It is the latter question that I encourage each fellow pilgrim to ask during these last weeks of Lent. Who are you becoming? You, child of God; divine image-bearer; follower; disciple; advocate; seeker; lost; Christian. As Holy Week begins with the first day of Spring, I encourage you to metaphorically do some lake-walking with God and listen for whatever silent word God offers. Rev. David R. Gaewski, Conference Minister DavidGaewski@uccny.org

I truly enjoy taking these photos and sharing them with members of Epiphany. However, displaying photos on church bulletin boards, etc. has been limited due to lack of space for this to be done. in anticipation of our 40 th Anniversary party, I have been concentrating my efforts to get all of my photos categorized and put into photo albums. So, while I am not done with this I do have quite a few albums available to be viewed. They are listed below. This is a work in progress. I will be adding photo albums from time to time.
