2 Tran s Mission Dear Friends, Reading chapter three of the book of Proverbs, I would like to offer you Ten New Year s Resolutions from the Wisest Man Ever Lived: King Solomon. He begins this 3rd chapter with a very matter fact statement: My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commandments in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. I sincerely believe that if each of us would adopt these principles and conscientiously live them out in this coming year, they would change our lives! 3 Angel Tree - A 2012 Update Her Name was Rosa December 22. She was laid off from her job. Her unemployment benefits were running out. Her daughter was gone. Her son-in-law was in jail. She was raising her 3 grandchildren ages 3, 4, & 5. She asked me for a job at the church. When Rosa picked up her gifts last Saturday, I told her to put the gifts under her tree until Christmas; she looked at me and said we can't afford a tree. She tugs at your heart and makes you feel grateful for all the small blessings that God gives us every day. She was one of many that had a story to tell with our Angel Tree Mission this year. Thanks to each of you that donated money or a gift for one of these children. Angel Tree appreciates the generous donation by Tex. This enabled us to buy extra gifts for the children and the goodies needed for their Christmas stockings. As always, none of this would be possible without you and my special angels Jo and Jeanette. 4 Fern McCallum would like to thank everyone for the prayers, card and phone calls. She is still a little weak, but misses coming to church and everyone in the Churchfamily. THE RECYCLED PAPER (Bulletins, flyers, inserts, old nets,) that we collect in the silver trash can in the Narthex goes to Chapel on Wheels, Release Time. Once a month I take all this paper to their recycle pick up behind the CVS on Euclid and Chapman in Fullerton. They take all kinds of paper including shredded, and cardboard; also recyclable cans and bottles. This is a great program to support. I remember getting release time to go to the Chapel on Wheels every week. It is non-denominational Christian teaching; open to all who sign up. 5 I WAS BRAIN-WASHED! By Manny Ferrer Born and raised as a Methodist Protestant by Methodist parents was not easy and was like being brainwashed in much same way the Soviets did with their hapless subjects! To this date, I can t remember a single day I missed church. Since I was seven years old and as the oldest of 2 sons, we followed a schedule like clock-work: a quarter mile walk to church for Early Morning Sunday Risers at 5:00 a.m.; Breakfast back in the house one hour thereafter at 6:00; back again to the church at 8:00 for Sunday School at the church backyard chapel; lastly at the main sanctuary at exactly 10:00 o clock to sit beside my Dad for Sunday Worship Service; at 9:00, singing This Is the Day ; and at 10:00 I Am Thine, O Lord. I was brain-washed to wear all new stuff clothes, pants, wristwatch even socks to the church FIRST before wearing it to some other occasions! I was brain-washed to say grace before and after meals, before and after bed-time. I was brain-washed to attend DVBS, our Daily Vacation Bible School twice a year. I was brain-washed to sing How Great Thou Art solo. I was brain-washed to attend our mid-week Bible Study at home. I was brain-washed to attend the confirmation at age 13 and be baptized. I was brain-washed to join the UMYF and attend all the Sunday 3:00 o clock afternoon sessions, retreats, camping, rallies, etcetera, etcetera. I was brain-washed to attend the vespers service at 6:00 p.m. If I could not attend the morning service because of my college ROTC training in the morning. I was brain-washed to court only and to marry ONLY a Methodist girl. My shoes had to be freshly shined, pants neatly pressed and my shirt plain (not checkered, not striped), hair neatly combed, or else. And, I must add: I had to have a new haircut! I remember how I hated those pressed pants, starched hard! And my white shirt starched stiff and hard, matching my pants! All this means that Saturday was the day of preparation: I had to have the haircut; I had to shine my shoes and make sure my clothes were done exactly prescribed by my parents. I was too young to remember anything different because I was brain-washed this way from the day I was born. Yes, I was brain-washed and strangely I did not know it! To my parents, it was simple: they just obeyed the words of Bible wisdom: Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it. (Prov. 22:6) My dad has since passed away and mom, now old and frail. But I still follow the same pre-determined habit. Every Saturday at 2:00 p.m. all my church clothes are ready, I have already shined my shoes, the offering envelopes already in my shirt pockets, ready for the next-day service. Sunday morning, at 9:00 I am already there in Room 8 attending the Bible study and after that, the Sanctuary at 10:00 for worship. True that when I first migrated to America, I could have let all this go down the drain. Except that I met the Lord right here in Southern California!
