The Episcopal Church of Our Saviour 2979 Coloma St /Placerville, CA / Dear friends in Christ, Transitions are hard for me. I recall the days just before each of my children were born. I have always been an early riser and in those days I woke up at 3 am (Now I sleep in until 4:30 am). I would make a cup of tea, read my daily devotional, sit in silence and wonder about how our lives would change and what joys and challenges lie ahead after the birth of this yet unknown child. Robert and Maria, the youngest of my five children graduated from Ponderosa High School on May 27 and I find myself in a new wondering phase. I wonder what joys and challenges lie ahead as they venture into adulthood and how all our lives will change as a result of the decisions they make. Being a parent brings unimaginable joy. Being a parent also brings many sleepless nights from the time our infants cry in those wee hours to those nights that our teenagers come home late and we lie awake listening to the tick of the clock waiting for the door to open (ready to pounce on them being grateful they are home safe and grounding them forever at the same time). I personally find the in between times, the times just before something happens, to be difficult. It could be likened to what some call liminality. In anthropology, liminality (from the Latin word līmen, meaning "a threshold ) is the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of rituals During a ritual's liminal stage, participants "stand at the threshold. 1 I don t like to spend time in thresholds but prefer to begin the next activity, the the next step. I am learning to be more patient and enjoy those threshold, in-between, moments. I have read all the comments from our recent table talk (They are included in this newsletter). There is a lot of collective wisdom and practical advice in your reflections. The 1 Page 1 of 14

love for and desire to reach out to others is evident in all the comments. I believe that with that kind of spirit and intention as a community Our Saviour can grow. I also know that along with growth and change comes discomfort. That discomfort can be approached from a spirit of grace and generosity or it can lead to criticism and unkind comments. Ron Edmondson, a expert on church growth wrote: When a church reaches genuinely hurting people, when people in the church lead messy lives, or simply when change comes to reach people the complainers will rise often among the most religious of people. And when these type people talk their negative energy spreads fast the opposite is also true, a positive attitude is also contagious. One of the surest ways to inhibit church growth is to allow negativity to spread and I ask you, as we stand in a liminal time, to join me and approach this threshold with grace, sustained by prayer and help from Christ s Holy Spirit. If you have a concern about something please approach myself or a vestry member so your concern can be addressed and resolved. I want to reassure those who are concerned that we will abandon our liturgy in order to become more modern. The preface to the 1928 Book of Common Prayer said: We are living in a new world: it is ours, if we are true to the faith that is in us, to seek to make it a better world....new knowledge and new ways of life bring with them new customs and forms of speech unknown before. The introduction to the New Zealand Prayer Book expresses my approach best: There is freedom within the heritage. Continuity is always in tension with liturgical change, but continuity there is. The intention is to extend, not break, the richness of our heritage. An example is our Rite I service that we use at 8 am. Many churches do not use the Rite I service because it seems outdated. I find that there are many people who find that service expresses their worship in ways that are deeply meaningful and I have no intention of changing that service. At the 10:30 Rite II service, will continue to look for music and use prayers from other sources that blend traditional and contemporary together. In fact, we will be using a Eucharistic prayer from a book called Enriching Our Worship during the summer months. Join me in wondering what lies ahead for us as a community of faith, this congregation committed to love and service, as we open our hearts and welcome others to join us, with joy and grace. Grateful for you all, Rev Deb Enriching Our Worship In 1997, the General Convention of the Episcopal Church authorized Enriching Our Worship, the fourth edition of Supplemental Liturgical Materials. The committee who put the book together sought language and imagery which would speak to the diversity of people who worship in the Episcopal Church today, both those who are well steeped in the tradition and those whose knowledge of scripture and the Christian tradition is fragmentary and to whom much traditional liturgical language is puzzling. We will be using some material from Enriching Our Worship at the 10:30 service during the summer. Page 2 of 14

Sunday School News News for our Sunday School Families! We have been having a great time in Sunday School with our full accompaniment of teachers and are so grateful for every teacher in our team! We are set to teach as we are but having two part-time teachers who fill in as needed for schedule changes will put the finishing touch on our teaching team. Please let me know if you would be able to fill in on occasion when a teacher needs to make a last minute change (you will receive full training). In May we had a special lesson on the Old Testament story of Daniel and the Lions Den. We read the story out of a special Childrens Illustrated Bible with lots of pictures then we had a fun activity related to the story. This was one of four Old Testament lessons the children have been enjoying throughout the year. VBS at Church of our Saviour is coming soon!! Our session will be 7/11 7/15 9am 12n this year so save the date. The theme this year is Surf Shack Catch the Wave of Gods Amazing Love! Please be sure to tell any of the parents/grandparents/guardians of the young people in your life about VBS; it is a wonderful experience that children will remember for their whole lives. We look forward to seeing everyone there!! On Sundays children K-3rd assemble in the Sunday School room at 10:20 to select musical instruments with which they process after the choir. Children 4th and up assemble in the church vestibule and process without instruments. After a blessing from the priest children return to their class for a short lesson based upon one of the readings of the day and a craft or other activity (K-3rd return down the aisle with their teacher; 4th and up leave through the back door with their teacher). Children return to church in time to celebrate the Eucharist with their families. Blessings to you all - Brandy Women s Bible Study Our Womens' Bible Study's last meeting for 1 Corinthians will be Wednesday, June 1. We will not meet during the summer and will resume on Wednesday, September 7. If you would like to join in the Fall study please let LeAnn ( ) know and a book will be ordered for you. Page 3 of 14

Calling all artists: Forming a Liturgical Art Committee From Mona: You have probably noticed that moving the columbarium has resulted in a space in the narthex that Rev. Deb has been decorating with fabric wall hangings. We have a good number of creative and talented individuals in our midst and the opportunity has arisen to share those gifts in the form of liturgical art. In discussing this opportunity with Rev Deb, we decided that it would be a good thing to form a committee that would be responsible for commissioning, maintaining and displaying a collection of hangings. Mona Baker If you are interested in participating in this committee, please contact Rev Deb or Mona Baker. From Rev Deb: One of my seminary classmates was a woman named Nancy Chinn. She was a Liturgical Artist and I was always amazed with the beautiful projects she created. The Episcopal Church has a group of Visual Arts (ECVA) dedicated to bring art and liturgy together. Their website ( ) has a wealth of ideas and is fun to surf. ECVA values the significance of visual imagery in spiritual formation and the development of faith, and encourages those who are engaged in using the visual arts in spiritual life. One way of encouraging the artist within and to reach out to others I have decided to start a monthly group in the fall that brings together Spirituality and the Arts. One of the classes I have taken in the past and will take again to incorporate into our Spirituality and the Arts is called Soul Collage. It will be held at Mercy Center in Auburn on July 16th. There is a flyer for the class on the next page. If you are interested in going you can register online or send in the attached flyer if. If there are enough folks we could get a car pool together. 8 Values that are part of Our Saviour Table Talk Comments Community both in our church and outreach. There are many paths by which God self-reveals. Value would be to share our beliefs with other faiths/religions and be equally understanding and open to those of others. Welcoming dialogue. Preserving the traditional liturgy. Determination to do all we can at all times to express our love and concern for one another. How can Our Saviour be saltier? Do we have enough media exposure on what we do? We are hiding our light under a bushel basket. We should be relevant to the community. If Our Saviour didn t exist, would anyone notice? Do we articulate any sense of mission? It would be good to help each person develop his/her own call to service. Working in partnership with other faith communities as they address local needs, Example: participate in nomadic shelter programs for the homeless. Meals bring people together. More aggressive advertising e.g. VBS Outreach to the suffering. Reinstitute prayer lists, meals to one another. No mechanism to know when the members have needs so we can try and help each other examples: surgery take meals, illnesses, prayer list in our bulletins, use technology to coordinate services such as meals for someone that needs help. We will send you the website info. What excites you and scares you about potential for new church growth? We are a loving parish. We create and build a community as individuals. We have to admit to our own flaws. We have to face our own humanity so people will feel comfortable here. If we tried to have a new mission (focus) we might have to give up old things and would feel like I m losing something. What is salient to enrich current ministries but change is difficult. We are gaining momentum we have a core of caring people. People who love. Start a campaign of helping members be debt free and in turn we can pay off the debt of the church. Imagine what we do if we are all debt free. Page 8 of 14

We need to find ways to keep the children coming to church, and that, of course, means the parents. I wonder if some kind of specific project that involved the family would work. We need to be more visible in the community. We need T-shirts. If the community needs volunteers for cleaning Hangtown Creek, for instance, we should be there. I m a firm believer in tithing, would that make me saltier? I wonder? Another idea I had was hosting an all-day choral workshop for singers from other church choirs. We would select 6 o 8 pieces ahead of time, work on it separately in advance, come together for the day workshop, and present an evening concert. I m just not sure our church is big enough. Excites - more community awareness, more opportunities to participate with others, more opportunities to learn. Scares that new ways may be deemed too radical (always done it this way syndrome) We need more kids and youth and families. People are so friendly with a small church. I hope it stays friendly, not necessarily small. Attention, recognition, affection, caring, listening, hearing, avoiding diminishment, limit sharing personal content. I really believe our future is with the children. There will be no church without fresh blood. Please may we place the altar flower envelopes in the pews to familiarize the congregation of their options re: flowers, candles, etc. I don t think people are even aware of the location and purpose of the red votive candles. Someone else needs to take over the Wednesday night adult formation. Fix the door on the men s bathroom upstairs and light on the stairs in Pierce, Thank you for offering space for veteran intake. What scares me is that we might not grow or that we will abandon the liturgy and become more modern to attract younger people. What excites me is the potential to improve the music if we are able to direct more resources that way. Also improving and expanding Christian formation through the forum. Make ourselves known in the community, fliers, parishioners out into the community to share our church community, booth set up at community events, car washes, fairgrounds, involve the kids in community events. Capitalize on the fact that we are the historical cornerstone of the community. Additional volunteers in the community animals (shelters?) other jail services can we provide services on a rotating basis, use lay ministers, daughters of the king, EFM graduates. Page 9 of 14
