1 The Episcopal Church of Our Saviour 2979 Coloma St Placerville, CA From the Priest-in-Charge Dear friends in Christ, It seems appropriate that I write this newsletter about Easter while I am sitting in a cemetery waiting for a funeral to begin. I am at Rockville cemetery in Fairfield surrounded by physical evidence of spring and new life with beautiful greenery, flowers and buds on the trees. I have always found cemeteries to be peaceful places. In fact, when I was in junior high school I used to ride my bike down a dirt road near my house and go through the back gate of an old cemetery. I discovered one day by accident when I was exploring. It soon became a favorite place to go. I found a hill that I liked to sit on under a large oak tree on that overlooked a pond and some graves. I d bring a book to read and enjoyed the peace I found there. Needless to say I was a bit of a weird child in junior high school, but I always had a sense of life, not death, when I visited there. We are in the middle of an Adult Forum series about Eternal Life. We have studied about different people's experiences of near-death events, about others who are clinically dead and brought back to life, and about our own thoughts, feelings and experiences about dying. It has led to good conversations about dying and what we believe about life after death. As Christians we are taught that Jesus' life continued and was transformed after he died, although he had a different sort of body. The post-easter body was one that could walk through walls and still eat a meal with others. The post-easter Jesus met the disciples where they were in their life. Some doubted while others raced to embrace him without question. That same Jesus is still as fully alive for you and I today. Clarence Jordan, twentieth-century Christian saint, said, The proof that God raised Jesus from the dead is not the empty tomb, but the full hearts of his transformed disciples. The crowning Page 1 of 10
2 evidence that he lives is not a vacant grave, but a spirit-filled fellowship. Not a rolled-away stone, but a carried-away. May the peace and joy of the resurrected Christ be yours, Rev Deb Sunday School News Greetings Sunday School families. We hope your family has had an easier time observing a Holy Lent with the materials we all received at our Family Lenten Preparation day. Holy Week and Easter are just around the corner and we have a few special Sundays coming up (10:30am services): Palm Sunday will be a childrens Sunday with several of our students participating with special jobs during the service (no Sunday School; nursery care will be provided). Easter Sunday will be a family service with the children joining their families for the entirety of this special celebration of our risen Saviour (no Sunday School; nursery care will be provided). After the service we will have an Easter egg hunt; we are asking each family to bring 6-12 filled eggs for the hunt. We are saddened to report that two of our families will be moving out of state and will be leaving our program. Both the Masars and the Grays will be leaving our program over the next few months. We will miss everyone please join us in wishing all of these children and parents well before they move to their new families. With Mr. John Masar leaving our congregation we will be another teacher short in our program. I appeal to each of you: please pray about this is God calling you to share your spiritual path with the children of our? It doesn t matter if you attend the 8am or 10:30am service, you are woman or man, you are young or young at heart our children need role models from all walks of life. We need at a total of three teachers, at least one teacher for each of our classes: K-3 rd grade and 4 th -8 th grade so there is a place for you regardless of your interest/skill with children of different ages. Our curriculum is fun and very easy to teach to. Our children need you! Please contact me if you are interested or even if you just have questions: /b2d21339@msn.com thank you Brandy Dorrans. 3 Except for special circumstances where the children stay with their families for the entire service each Sunday our Sunday School program offers two classes: one for children K-3 rd grade who gather in the Sunday School room at 10:20 then process with ribbons during Lent and instruments for the Easter season and proceed to class after a blessing; the other class is for kids 4 th grade and older, they process (without ribbons/instruments) and leave the service at the welcome after the acolytes are done with their duties, they meet in St Marks' room - both classes return to to celebrate the Eucharist with their families. Confirmation Baptism is the ancient entry rite into the Church, which is also called the Body of Christ. In baptism, we affirm that we belong to the God who is made known to us in Jesus, and we promise (or, if we are infants or very young children, promises are made on our behalf) to live our lives in accordance with this deepest truth about who we are and whose we are. Confirmation in the Episcopal Church is a sacramental rite in which a baptized person makes a mature and public affirmation of the promises that are usually made at baptism by parents and godparents. After making these affirmations, a bishop in apostolic succession lays hands on the candidate and prays a prayer of confirmation. Apostolic succession is the teaching that those who have been consecrated (ordained) as bishops represent a direct, uninterrupted line of continuity from the Apostles of Jesus Christ. This teaching confers upon such bishops the authority to confirm members, ordain clergy (including those newly elected as bishops), and exercise authority in their dioceses. So, those who have already been confirmed in a tradition that consecrates bishops in apostolic succession, do not need to be confirmed again in the Episcopal Church; they are said to be received" into the. Reception is reserved for those who have already been confirmed in another denomination by a bishop in apostolic succession (such as Roman Catholics or Orthodox). A more widely accepted understanding of reception is that it is a way of honoring anyone who has made a mature confession of faith in any other denomination by saying, in effect, we recognize and honor your spiritual journey in another fellowship, and we welcome you into the fellowship of the Episcopal Church, as you continue that journey. The bishop lays hands on the person being received and says, We recognize you as a member of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church, and we receive you into the fellowship of this Communion (Book of Common Prayer, p. 418). So, if you have not been confirmed or received by a bishop in apostolic succession, you may choose either confirmation or reception. Page 3 of 10
4 Reaffirmation is for people who have already been confirmed in the Episcopal Church. Some people presented to the bishop during the service of Confirmation are there to reaffirm their Christian vows. These might be people who have been away from the for a period of time and want to make a new beginning. Others might be people who sense that they are at a new stage in their spiritual life and want to affirm this in ritual. We all go through many changes in our life s journey, and reaffirmation provides a rite for those who want to take stock of their religious and spiritual life anew. Please let me know if anyone is interested in being confirmed, received into the or reaffirming their Christian vows. Bishop Beisner will be visiting Our Saviour on Sept 27. We will scheduling classes soon. THE CRACK OF THE BAT Once again we are happy to invite you and your friends and families to come to the ballpark for a fun early Fourth of July celebration with a stirring opening ceremony, a baseball game, and fireworks on Friday, July 3, The Sacramento River Cats play in Raley Field in West Sacramento and are now the AAA team for the San Francisco Giants. They will be facing the Salt Lake Bees who are the AAA Team for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (no, I didn t make that up). AAA players are one step away from the Major Leagues and the teams serve as a place for Major League players rehabilitating from injuries. The game time is 7:05 pm with the gates opening at least an hour beforehand. Last year the temperature was near perfect but it is July in Sacramento so can be hot. We re sitting on the first base side in the shade as in past years. Seats are $20 per person (Yes, those are Giants prices). Raley Field is a family and fan friendly place to spend an evening so we hope you can join us. Call or now with your reservations, Tom and Lee Weikert at or eklktcwe@earthlink.net. This game does sell out so we need the number in your party as soon as possible so you won t be disappointed. Please have your payment in by May 15, You may make checks out to Lee Weikert. 5 SHARE NEWS During the month of February SHARE provided emergency food to 352 local families. This means that 1376 individuals were not hungry for at least three days. February was a short month: in January almost 1500 other individuals ate good nutritious food for at least three days. Those who are homeless or without work are almost always short on food. SHARE is not designed to be the sole source of food for families. What it does provide is a three day supply of food every other month. N. They depend on our contributions. SHARE is supported by a coalition of 14 es and the federal government through the FOOD BANK of El Dorado County. Our Saviour no longer supports this cause financially but our members donate food. At the present time there are excellent sources of canned vegetables. fresh produce, and bread. What is needed are small jars of peanut butter, pasta (any kind) and cereal. Perishable items such as meat, eggs, and milk must be purchased. You can help by bringing cans of beans, pasta, cereal, baby food, and other non- perishable food items. It s OK to make a financial contribution. Make checks out to Church of Our Saviour with SHARE in the memo.
