In a classic Peanuts comic strip, Sally carefully labels her paper, Church History. As Charlie Brown glances over her shoulder, Sally considers her subject. When writing about Church History, Sally scrawls, we have to go back to the very beginning. Our pastor was born in So begins a wonderful little book on the History of the Christian Church called, Christian History Made Easy. Its humor, writing style, and emphasis on the drama of Christian History over dates and details make it easily accessible to every reader and a wonderful way to get an overview of the twenty centuries since the end of the book of Acts. So why am I telling you about this book? Because we will be using it in our adult study starting on October 26 th! We will do a 12-week study of the book, with twelve thirty minute videos and discussion time every Sunday morning at 11 AM through to the beginning of Advent and then finishing up after Christmas. Here is what the author, Dr. Timothy Paul Jones writes about the book: Christian History Made Easy is a summary of the church s story, written in words that anyone can understand. I haven t cluttered the text with abstract facts and figures and footnotes. Christian History Made Easy is a collection of stories. Together, these stories are intended to sketch one small portion of what God has been up to for the past 2,000 years. So why study the history of the church? What kinds of things will we learn in such a study? Well, as Edmund Burke famously said, Those who don t know history are doomed to repeat it. And that surely is the case with Christian History. Are there those in our world today who deny the deity of Christ? Yes there are! Well, there were those in the 4 th century who did too and the church struggled with and answered that question then! And they came up with an answer that you will find very familiar. The leader of the movement who denied that Jesus was God was a man named Arius; therefore, the movement he led was called Arianism. Consider this account from the text of Christian History Made Easy: Arius chose a different option: He taught that Jesus was not eternal God; Jesus was, instead, the first being that God created. Once, Arius claimed, the Son did not exist. Arius knew the power of music; so, he put his theological ideas to a catchy tune. Within weeks Alexandrians were singing in the streets, Once the Son did not exist!

2 Church members who rejected Arius ideas responded with a chorus that Christians still sing a hymn that s known as Gloria Patri: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is no, and ever shall be, world without end. Did you know that when we sing the Glori Patri every Sunday, we are echoing the words and teachings from the 4 th Century? That we are fighting Arianism which still has its proponents, though they go by different names, today, and proclaiming that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are God in three persons, each deserving of glory and worship. This controversy over the deity of Christ led to the well-known council of Nicaea in 325 AD from which we get the famous Nicene Creed. This is just a taste of the kinds of things we will cover in our study of Church History. Why are there Protestants and Catholics? What is the Eastern Orthodox Church? Where did Baptists come from? Who was Martin Luther? Who was Augustine? Who was John Wycliffe? Why is there a group of Bible translators named after him today? Who was John Calvin and why is Calvinism named after him? What is Calvinism anyway?!? I went to seminary on the Jonathan Edwards Scholarship. Who was he? Why does he have a scholarship for ministry in New England named after him? Who were and are the Fundamentalists? What s an Evangelical? Is our church evangelical? Yes, we will even get all the way up to Billy Graham! 4 WHAT S EW I THE LIBRARY Melody Carson is another writer of Amish stories and this smoothly plotted story about seeing life from another s point of view will leave you feeling good and looking for more books from this creative and talented author. It is spring break of her senior year and Madison Van Buren is fed up. Stressed over decisions on colleges, her parents bickering and pressures from her boyfriend, Madison gets in her car and just drives away. Meanwhile, seventeen-year old Anna Fisher wants to escape the so-called simple life of the Amish, which for her consists of caring for younger children, sewing, cooking, and gardening and she is well aware that her future will simply be more of the same with a man she doesn t love. Worlds collide when Madison and Anna meet for the first time is a small town, realize that they look uncannily alike, and decide the grass is greener on the other side. Neither of them will ever be the same. Do they look enough alike to pull this off and how does it all end? This book will be placed in the New Books section on top of the book shelves and later will be placed in the Christian Novels section. Eunice Desjardins for the Library committee OBC WOME 'S FELLOWSHIP EWS It was a light rainy day and chilly when twelve women from our fellowship group went to Merriland Farms Cafe for lunch on Thursday, September 11, It felt like a fall day later in the season. The food was excellent and we had a great time. The room was a "little" noisy with twelve women chattering away but fun was had by all in attendance. In October it is our turn to have dinner in the evening so that our working ladies can attend. At the luncheon we announced that it would be at the Steakhouse on Wednesday, October 8th at 6:00PM. However, since then we learned that in October the

5 choir will be practicing on Wednesday the 8th so to accommodate the choir group we have changed the dinner date to Thursday, October 9th at 6:00PM. Hope this is satisfactory with everyone. I will be on vacation with my two oldest daughters so if you need to add or drop a name, please contact Ann-Marie Johnson at church or by phone at A sign-up sheet will be available. Enjoy! Blessings on everyone, Audrey Woodard, President Diaconate/ October Beacon On Sunday September 14, to faithfully support and to faithfully participate in the advancement of the Gospel through the Great Commission (Matt:28: 18-20; Acts 1:8), the church prayed over, dedicated and commended to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build up and to give the inheritance among all who are sanctified (Acts 20:32) the Muslim Bibles (Luke & Acts) that we sent on to Brandon and Brianne Doyle who are working with Global Gates in the New York and New Jersey area. On September 28 missionaries John and Jan Thorpe will be here to lead the worship service and to give us an update on what is happening in Bangladesh. The adult Bible study on Heaven and the accompanying weekly sermon series is coming to a close and the adult Bible study class will be discussing whether or not we will begin a 12 week adult (including teenagers) study on church history or something else. Young children (perhaps K through 5 th grade) will be starting Sunday School soon using the DVD curriculum of What s in the Bible? Mary Beth volunteered to teach this fall. Pastor Jeff, with the help of the internet, has been thinking of ways to support parents all week long in the discipling of their children. Three round tables have been purchased for hospitality time after worship. The Diaconate is considering the mass mailing of advertisements in the local area for future concerts at OBC. The York Association will be meeting at the Village Baptist Church in Kennebunkport on September 28 at 5:00 PM to discuss By-Law changes. Music to be furnished by the Praise Band. In a classic Peanuts comic strip, Sally carefully labels her paper, Church History. As Charlie Brown glances over her shoulder, Sally considers her subject. When writing about Church History, Sally scrawls, we have to go back to the very beginning. Our pastor was born in So begins a wonderful little book on the History of the Christian Church called, Christian History Made Easy. Its humor, writing style, and emphasis on the drama of Christian History over dates and details make it easily accessible to every reader and a wonderful way to get an overview of the twenty centuries since the end of the book of Acts. So why am I telling you about this book? Because we will be using it in our adult study starting on October 26 th! We will do a 12-week study of the book, with twelve thirty minute videos and discussion time every Sunday morning at 11 AM through to the beginning of Advent and then finishing up after Christmas. Here is what the author, Dr. Timothy Paul Jones writes about the book: Christian History Made Easy is a summary of the church s story, written in words that anyone can understand. I haven t cluttered the text with abstract facts and figures and footnotes. Christian History Made Easy is a collection of stories. Together, these stories are intended to sketch one small portion of what God has been up to for the past 2,000 years. So why study the history of the church? What kinds of things will we learn in such a study? Well, as Edmund Burke famously said, Those who don t know history are doomed to repeat it. And that surely is the case with Christian History. Are there those in our world today who deny the deity of Christ? Yes there are! Well, there were those in the 4 th century who did too and the church struggled with and answered that question then! And they came up with an answer that you will find very familiar. The leader of the movement who denied that Jesus was God was a man named Arius; therefore, the movement he led was called Arianism. Consider this account from the text of Christian History Made Easy: Arius chose a different option: He taught that Jesus was not eternal God; Jesus was, instead, the first being that God created. Once, Arius claimed, the Son did not exist. Arius knew the power of music; so, he put his theological ideas to a catchy tune. Within weeks Alexandrians were singing in the streets, Once the Son did not exist!

20 Church members who rejected Arius ideas responded with a chorus that Christians still sing a hymn that s known as Gloria Patri: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is no, and ever shall be, world without end. Did you know that when we sing the Glori Patri every Sunday, we are echoing the words and teachings from the 4 th Century? That we are fighting Arianism which still has its proponents, though they go by different names, today, and proclaiming that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are God in three persons, each deserving of glory and worship. This controversy over the deity of Christ led to the well-known council of Nicaea in 325 AD from which we get the famous Nicene Creed. This is just a taste of the kinds of things we will cover in our study of Church History. Why are there Protestants and Catholics? What is the Eastern Orthodox Church? Where did Baptists come from? Who was Martin Luther? Who was Augustine? Who was John Wycliffe? Why is there a group of Bible translators named after him today? Who was John Calvin and why is Calvinism named after him? What is Calvinism anyway?!? I went to seminary on the Jonathan Edwards Scholarship. Who was he? Why does he have a scholarship for ministry in New England named after him? Who were and are the Fundamentalists? What s an Evangelical? Is our church evangelical? Yes, we will even get all the way up to Billy Graham! Stressed over decisions on colleges, her parents bickering and pressures from her boyfriend, Madison gets in her car and just drives away. Meanwhile, seventeen-year old Anna Fisher wants to escape the so-called simple life of the Amish, which for her consists of caring for younger children, sewing, cooking, and gardening and she is well aware that her future will simply be more of the same with a man she doesn t love. Worlds collide when Madison and Anna meet for the first time is a small town, realize that they look uncannily alike, and decide the grass is greener on the other side. Neither of them will ever be the same. Do they look enough alike to pull this off and how does it all end? Eunice Desjardins for the Library committee OBC WOME 'S FELLOWSHIP EWS It was a light rainy day and chilly when twelve women from our fellowship group went to Merriland Farms Cafe for lunch on Thursday, September 11, It felt like a fall day later in the season. The food was excellent and we had a great time. The room was a "little" noisy with twelve women chattering away but fun was had by all in attendance. In October it is our turn to have dinner in the evening so that our working ladies can attend. At the luncheon we announced that it would be at the Steakhouse on Wednesday, October 8th at 6:00PM. However, since then we learned that in October the

23 choir will be practicing on Wednesday the 8th so to accommodate the choir group we have changed the dinner date to Thursday, October 9th at 6:00PM. Hope this is satisfactory with everyone.
