The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Proclamation of the Word Scripture Reading John 15: As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and abide in his love. 11 I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. 12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16 You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17 I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. *Hymn # 590 Christ Loves the Church Sermon Rev. Kate Mackereth Fulton

Announcements Welcome! If you are a guest today, thank you for worshiping with us! Please sign the pew register and introduce yourself to one of our pastors today. Ushers are available at the back of the Sanctuary to provide large print Bibles, Hymnals, and hearing assistance devices. Helpful volunteers at our Visitors Center can assist with other questions. A handicap-accessible restroom with changing table is located past the church office and down the hall. We understand young ones can get wiggly during worship, so if you desire, parents may make use of our nursery for children age 2 and under, or may take children into the Octagon room just off the Narthex where the audio feed of the service can be heard. Busy bags, children s bulletins, and other items are available at the Visitors Center desk. Children and Youth, age 2 through grade 12, are invited to attend Sunday School most Sundays during the 10:30 AM worship time; please see below for weekly Sunday School Details. Sunday School Details Children age 2-10 are encouraged to come to our Summer Sunday School in July and August. Today, Sunday July 8, children will begin in the Sanctuary with their families and will transition to classrooms 200 and 203 with their teachers following the Children s Moment. We are enjoying a brand new summer curriculum from Children s Illustrated Ministries, with lots of coloring and fun activities. Children will engage with biblical stories in both the Old and New Testaments to discover ways we join God at work in the world. Older children and youth will be in worship in the Sanctuary. Here s how summer at St. Paul s is shaping up: July 8: Children s Moments & Summer Sunday School All children will begin in the Sanctuary with their families at 10:30 AM. Following the Children s Moment, children ages 2-10 will transition to Summer Sunday School classes. July 15: Musical Theatre Camp No Summer Sunday School; all children will be in worship to enjoy the Musical Theatre Camp s presentation of It s Cool in the Furnace, a musical about Daniel, King Nebuchadnezzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. July 22-September 2: Summer Sunday School All children ages 2-10 are invited to join the Summer Sunday School classes in Rooms 200 & 203 starting at 10:30 AM. Backpack Build 2018 Once again Justice & Compassion is partnering with Interfaith Works to get backpacks and supplies to needy children in time for the start of school. Collection begins Sunday, July 22 and ends Wednesday, August 8. We will build the backpacks after the 10:30 AM service on Sunday, August 12. The following are the most needed supplies: new backpacks; binders (2-inch, three ring), filler paper for binders, dividers, pen (blue or black), glue sticks and bottles, markers, colored pencils, pencil boxes or pouches, and spiral notebooks. Financial contributions are also welcome and will be put toward purchasing additional supplies. Make checks payable to St. Paul s UMC with Backpacks on the memo line. If you have questions, contact Angela Harvey (aeharvey1007@hotmail.com) or Leigha Gordillo (leighamj@gmail.com).
Stephen Ministers St. Paul s is fortunate to have a team of Stephen Ministers, offering care and support for those facing life s challenges. If God is calling you to serve in this way, it is time to echo Samuel and say, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. We would like to send two or three new people to Stephen Ministry training sessions, held at various church locations around Montgomery County this September. To start the process, please contact Virginia Bickford (tomvab@msn.com, ) or talk to our Stephen Ministers as they host Coffee Hour on August 5. If this is your way of saying I am here, Lord, send me, please contact us soon responses are needed by or before August 5. UMM Mini-Golf The UMM will be having our nineteenth annual miniature golf and supper outing on Wednesday, July 11. It will feature miniature golf at Gaithersburg s Bohrer Park followed by supper at CheeBurger CheeBurger off Shady Grove Road in the Fallsgrove Shopping Center. We will be leaving from the church parking lot at 6:30 PM and should be back by approximately 10:30 PM. Men, your sons and daughters are welcome to join us. If you would like to attend this fun event, please sign up in the church office. SPY News Parents and Youth! We are launching exciting new projects and making some schedule changes starting this Fall, and we want your input! Go to the forms section at stpaulsk.org/community/youth to fill out our SPY survey. Please submit your responses by next Sunday, July 15. Also, Council on Youth Ministry folks should look for a message from Youth Pastor Micah Smartt to schedule a summer CYM meeting. Please contact Micah at msmartt@stpaulsk.org with any questions. Be the Village Raising children of faith takes a village, and we are seeking volunteers who are willing to lead a Sunday School class two times a month throughout the school year. Please prayerfully consider becoming a member of the teaching community at St. Paul s. Experience is not required just a heart to help guide the next generation. Training, materials, snacks, and support will all be provided. If you can t teach on a regular basis but would be able to substitute on occasion, you are most welcome to join us! Contact Meg Baker at mbaker@stpaulsk.org, ext. 104 for more information. Summer Sunday School We are in particular need of Summer Sunday School volunteers for August 19 and 27. If you can spare an hour of your times on either of those days, please contact Meg Baker at mbaker@stpaulsk.org, look for the sheet in the Narthex, or go to to sign up. Thank you for serving the church community in this way! Taking a Break from Pancakes Please remember that the ever-popular UMM-sponsored Community Pancake Breakfast will be on a break in August. Pancake Breakfast will be back soon, offering delicious breakfasts that support good causes, September through June.
Introducing Flat Paul! Meet Flat Paul! With the summer months come visits with family, sight-seeing adventures, family vacations, and trips to other places across town and across the planet. Whether your travels take you to the pool, the beach, the lake, or the mountains, we encourage you to bring St. Paul with you. Pick up your own Flat Paul hand fan in the Narthex today, then take him along wherever your summer takes you. Send us a photo of you and Flat Paul, tell us where you are (e.g., at Rehoboth Beach, visiting grandma, atop the Space Needle, etc.) and we will post on the Flat Paul bulletin board in the Narthex! your pictures with Flat Paul to Meg Baker at mbaker@stpauls.org, or text them to her at Happy trails to you! People plan their path, but the LORD secures their steps. ~Proverbs 16:9 Flat Paul Family Buckets In the Narthex, you can find Flat Paul Family Vacation Buckets, full of helpful summer items including as a travel journal, family devotionals, coloring pages, crayons, and more (and, yes, a Flat Paul!). One bucket per family, please! Communion Collect The next Communion Collect will be Sunday, August 5 but we accept donations throughout the month. You can place non-perishable grocery items in the bins in the Narthex, pre-pack full bags using a shopping list provided, or donate Safeway or Giant grocery store gift cards $10 value each, please. Volunteers will be needed after worship on August 5 to help sort and bag contributions. We also invite volunteers starting at 6:45 PM for distribution night on Monday, August 6. Please contact coordinators Kim Longsworth (kimberlylongsworth@gmail.com, ) or Jean Langbein (jeanlangbein@gmail.com, ) if you can volunteer as a driver to help deliver groceries to those who are shut-in, disabled, or otherwise unable to make it to the church. Calling All Crafters The quieter days of summer may provide the opportunity to spend more time on your hobbies. If so, please consider creating crafts now to be donated to the next Fall Craft Fair. All types of crafts are gratefully accepted. Past sales have included needle work, quilted and knit items, photos, greeting cards, paintings, pottery, jewelry, preserves, and books. All the proceeds from the Craft Fair sales are donated to worthy causes that help those in need. Still Wednesday We will be very still in July and August! Still Wednesday will not meet at the church during these months, but we plan to return in September and invite all to join us then for a time of stillness, reflection, prayer, and quiet in a world that can be all too noisy. Wanted: Flower Ministry Participants Anyone can minister to others in the St. Paul s community by delivering flowers. Please sign up on the office bulletin board for Sundays now through the end of December. On Sunday following the 10:30 AM worship service, pick up a card from the clipboard and a bunch of altar flowers to take to a member of our church who could use a little extra cheer. Those who are unable to come to church or who have experienced a time of sadness truly appreciate this kind gesture from our faith community.
Liturgists and Communion Stewards We welcome Liturgists to read Scripture and Communion Stewards to help serve communion during the first worship service on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM. Upcoming openings include: July 29 and August 19. To sign up, simply add your name and address to the sign-up sheet found here: goo.gl/xz5t79. Counters Wanted We are looking for a few new counters to join our team. Each Sunday after worship small groups of counters take the church offerings, count the contributions, and record the week s financial numbers. If your skills align with this area, we welcome your help. Please contact Rev. Adam Snell directly to discuss this volunteer opportunity (absnell@stpaulsk.org, ext. 101). United Methodist Camps The Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church offers a number of exciting church camps during the summer months. Flyers are available in the church office with dates for Camp Manidokan in the mountains near Harper s Ferry WV, and West River Center on the banks of the Chesapeake tributary. Go to funfriendsfaith.com to learn more about camps for all different ages and interests. Concerns about cost shouldn t keep you from participating! St. Paul s offers campership scholarships to help cover part or all of the fees associated with camp opportunities. Contact Micah Smartt (msmartt@stpaulsk.org, ext. 111) to discuss camperships. Nicaragua VIM Update St. Paul s has an annual tradition of supporting a Volunteers In Mission team each summer. We had planned to take a team to Nicaragua in early August However, because of the current political unrest in Nicaragua, we have decided to cancel this year s VIM trip. Although the entire team is heartbroken about this, we think it is the right decision. We have been involved in the building of two new community preschools. Construction has been completed and the finishing touches (such as brightly colored paint, murals, and ceiling fans) will happen without us so the schools can get up and running! If you donated toward this year s VIM project, your contributions will be sent to the community preschools to cover the costs of supplies and labor. We all hope and pray that the turmoil in Nicaragua comes to a peaceful resolution and that we will be able to offer a trip in the summer of Thank you, again, for your continued prayers and faithful support of this important ministry. Please contact Athena Gaalswyk, athena_gaalswyk@yahoo.com, if you have any questions. Christian Faith 101 Christian Faith 101, an adult study class, will be offered this fall. The course explores the religious, historical, and political context that shaped major components of Christian faith, doctrine, and practice as it developed over centuries. The course consists of 14 three-hour sessions, held each Tuesday morning beginning September 4. The class size is limited to 12 participants. A flyer with more details about the class is available in the church office. Please contact Brian or Therese Walden if you are interested in participating (bewalden@verizon, net, ; tcwalden@verizon.net, ).
Announcements and Epistle Articles If you have a St. Paul s-related event and want to let church members and friends know about it, please Sunday bulletin items to Erin Steele in the church office at stpaulsunited@stpaulsk.org by 12:00 noon on Wednesday. The suggested length is 75 words and should include date, time, and contact information. If you have an article to go in the monthly Epistle Newsletter, submit Epistle items to stpaulsunited@stpaulsk.org no later than the 15th of the month. Please send Epistle content, 250 words or less, as a Word doc attachment with Epistle Item in the subject line. Paper submissions may be placed in the yellow Epistle folder on the desk in the main office. Please note, Epistle articles are not automatically included in the bulletins or vice versa, so submit items separately if you want them to appear in both places. Thanks for staying connected to all that St. Paul s has to offer!
