1 The Communicator Volume 30, Issue 6 Fall 2016 ECBA Decides to Sell BCM House and Installs New Officers at Annual Meeting The annual meeting of the East Central Baptist Association was held on Thursday, October 22 nd, at 7:00 p.m., at Old Town Hill Baptist Church in Muncie. Nineteen messengers from six of the ECBA constituted churches were present. Reports Moderator Gail Layman (KABC) called the meeting to order asked for reports to be presented. He noted that there was a glitch in the new system for Annual Church Profiles (ACPs) so that report would not be available for the meeting. Assistant Treasurer, Jon Nichols (HVBC), presented the treasurer s report which showed that the Association was still operating in the red. Gail Layman gave his moderator s report, highlighting some of his experiences during his tenure. Doug Jividen represented the State Convention of Baptists in Indiana (SCBI). He said that everything was going well with the retirement of Executive Director, Cecil Seagle, and the search for his replacement. Mary Fullhart (OTH) shared the International Missions Board (IMB) and the North American Missions Board s (NAMB) report and presented certificates to Halteman Village Baptist Church for ECBA s highest per capita and the highest dollar giving to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. 2 Page 2 VOLUME 30, ISS UE 6 Churches Working in Unity for the Glory of God By Jeremiah Kinney So for a couple of years, I ve been church planting, which means starting a new church. I ve received lots of help and only a little criticism. As our little church has grown, we ve needed to move spaces a few times. We moved from living rooms to a small theatre, then to a diner and adjacent conference room, then to the youth room + nursery + classrooms of a traditional church building that is still in use by the church who owns it. That church is Riverside United Methodist. They are not of our denomination (we are Southern Baptist Convention affiliates), but we believe the same core things about God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the brokenness of the human heart, the reason for the cross, heaven, hell, the church, the Bible, God s free offer of grace, etc. We have outgrown that youth room. Riverside has offered us their auditorium, and with it, their AV equipment, furniture, lobby, part of a closet, etc. Not only that, but they have moved Bible Study Opportunities for Your Church Ron Ross has finished teaching the seventeen (17) session study on "Who Am I, Really?" a Bible study on the believer's identity in Jesus Christ. What many Christians do not realize is that the physical life for Christians is actually a transitioning into the life God desires for His own. Ron would really enjoy sharing the study with associational churches. The study involves one hour for seventeen weeks and could be scheduled at a time which does not conflict with previously scheduled services. If your church would like to conduct such a study, please contact Ron by telephone at (765) or by at roro062@att.net. Since Ron is no longer pastoring, he is also available for pulpit supply and other type studies. their service time forward by 15 minutes in order to accommodate the necessary time change we are undertaking by an hour and a half. And I have not yet met a single person in this church who has begrudged us one thing. Their church and ours try to present a biblical message of a gospel of hope founded on Jesus Christ. Their pastor and I try to keep a Christcentered message of love and compassion at the forefront. We are in grateful awe at the cooperation and mutual rooting for each other. I was speaking to their pastor yesterday about where I d stand, where we d serve communion, and I commented about the small area of the auditorium that we d be using. He replied, But that s only for a little while. Someday, this whole room will be filled. Can you believe that? No competition there. Pure love in Christ. Integris Community Church of Portland and Albany have found door-todoor visitation both unsuccessful and irritating to homeowners. As we understand the Great Commission, we know outreach and evangelism can never be sacrificed and still remain in God s will as a New Testament Church. Portland decided to have an outreach at a soccer field this summer. We discovered these people were mostly Hispanics that work in the local chicken plant. We served hot dogs, brats, hamburgers, chips and pop. We were able to love these wonderful people and build relationships with them. They were very grateful for our gift to them and we look forward to building and deepening our relationship. Pure brotherhood. And it s not just him, and it s not just me. It s both whole churches. It s a beautiful thing. We are not perfect people. We are not even better than average people. We are sheep who were lost but then found by Christ. We were blind but now we see because he has healed us. We were once dead but now alive because he has raised us. And because of him, we are grateful to serve Him, one another, and our community in togetherness. Soli Deo gloria. Integris Community Church Reaches Out to Community in New Ways By Greg Haisley The Albany Family did the same thing at our Little League Field and it was well-received by those who were on the receiving end as well. It was wonderful to me, as the Pastor, to see so many people who had previously done little to no outreach before, engaging people with the Gospel and grace. Another tremendous benefit of this style of outreach is that we are able to engage multiple generations on neutral ground, as they don t feel imposed upon. We received permission from both league leaders before doing theses outreaches and both were very grateful and were not concerned about possible concession stand revenue losses.

Darrell Brown, First Baptist Church of Montpelier ( ) Church Planting Team Leader Greg Haisley, Integris Jama Marlow (North Delaware) gave the Resolutions and Arrangement Committee report and the dates, times, places, and speakers presented were accepted. (See page 6). Chris Hubler (NDBC), Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee stated that the ad hoc committee had determined that there was no further action that could be taken until some items are settled, specifically the status of the BCM House/ECBA Office. Once the membership had determined the future of the BCM house then the Ad Hoc Committee would be able to view budgeted items and focused ministries and give the membership a plan for a healthy association. Chris passed out a list of Pros and Cons of selling the house, noting that selling the house does not end the BCM ministry. The ministry can still meet on campus now and if BSU rules change where it could not meet on campus, it can meet at another location, including one of our churches. The vote on Should the ECBA keep or sell the BCM House/ECBA Office? was brought to the floor. Members voted by a show of hands. The moderator stated that there were 7 yes and 3 no votes and directed the trustees to begin the actions needed to sell the house. Brad Storm (RBC) noted that an appointed committee s term ends at the end of the Annual Meeting and that the new moderator would need to appoint a new committee or re-appoint the existing committee. Redeemer Baptist Becomes Submerged for Vacation Bible School Eli Castor checks out the submarine in the Preschool VBS Room at Redeemer. Moderator Gail Layman ceremonially passed the gavel to Jim Marlow, Moderator for Jim Marlow closed the meeting in prayer. The meeting was following by worship through music The sanctuary at Redeemer Baptist Church was transformed into an underwater fantasy for VBS. Vacation Bible School was Submerged at Redee mer Baptist Church June 6 11 but preparation began many weeks before. Redeemer is blessed to have several professional school teachers plus people who are talented in arts and crafts. Not only were the classrooms transformed into a underwater fantasy, so was the sanctuary. This transformation usually occurs nearly a month before VBS begins and the whole church gets excited about the upcoming event. The school enrolled 87 children and workers for the 5 day event. We were thankful to be able to host this event again this year and see our church kids discipled and 18 unchurched children get to learn about Jesus. Southern Baptists provided resounding support through the 2015 Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions. Finalized in early June, the 2015 Lottie Moon offering totaled $165.8 million -- the highest total in the 127-year history of the offering. led by Jeff Conner, Tammy Bell, and the Praise Team of OTH. The message was presented by Ron Ross, focusing on Ephesians and the church body.
5 VOLUME 30, ISS UE 6 Page 5 Old Town Hill Baptist Church had a wonderful SUBMERGED VBS! As you can see, we love to decorate for our VBS theme. Dee Filler and Sabra Douglas were Co-Directors for VBS this year. We had almost 300 people enrolled in VBS for the week. We had a friendly competition between the girls and the boys to donate money to our food pantry. Our children donated almost $ to our food pantry to purchase canned food for those in need. We had two children who accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior and two children who desire to be baptized. The week of videos about a hidden treasure, crafts, bible lessons and fun songs made for a wonderful week of being SUBMERGED in God s Word. A big THANK YOU to Redeemer Baptist Church for the VBS decorations that they kindly passed along.
