Volunteers are needed to assist the ID Committee with a number of items. Use above or call ) We will need lots of volunteers to work the corners and store fronts. Anyone over 18 can work a street corner. The more we raise, the more the organizations receive. 3) If your company has a matching program, please consider the ID drive as a recipient. We will provide you with the form. 4) If your company needs to donate to a worthy cause, ask them to consider the ID Drive. 1) Applications for requests are in the manila folder in the Deputy Grand Knight's mailbox. DO NOT place completed forms back in the folder. Leave them in the DGK mailbox. 2) The Charity Fund budget is currently less than half of what it was last year due to a decrease in the number of poker events from 4 to 2. Requests will be limited to the immediate area we serve. Thus, "our own back yard." Be realistic about the amount you request so we can stretch what we have. 3) Item two above is based on a phone request I recently received were the requester was looking for a huge donation which would have wiped out the entire fund and then some. Chancellor Report - Ray Cordell Contact Chancellor: scuba24@wideopenwest.com Brother Knights; Summer is in full swing and members of The Knights of Columbus Holy Rosary Council are taking full advantage of the warm weather and sunshine. We are at the beginning of our fraternal year, but have already hit the ground running. Brother Knights have attended meetings and events like the St. James BBQ. They have also given up their valuable holiday time to march in parades and at the Frontier Days Beer area selling tickets and checking IDs. Thank you all for your participation and dedication. Council activities are not slowing down anytime soon. On Saturday, August 24, the 2013 ID Drive kicks off with the annual BBQ. The Intellectual Disabilities drive is one of 1
2 the most visible and recognizable events that the Knights of Columbus participates in. Our summer BBQ sets the stage for another successful drive for our council and says thank you in advance for the efforts that will be put forth. Invite your family, friends and co-workers to attend this classic summer BBQ. There are also several volunteer opportunities the day of the BBQ. Signup sheets will be at all meetings. At our September 19 th social meeting, we will have a Special Olympics athlete as a guest speaker. Those that were fortunate enough to hear last year s athlete speak know the passion and dedication that these participants have. It is truly a inspirational and moving event that is not to be missed. On September 14 th and 15 th, we will be collecting for the ID drive before and after mass at our four churches Street corner and store entrance collections will be on September 20 th and 21 st. The signup sheets will be coming out shortly for all four of these dates. Please be generous with your time and efforts to make this year s ID drive the most successful we have ever had. On Sunday September 29th, the Bears are playing the Lions and the Holy Rosary Council is hosting a tailgate party to celebrate this fierce rivalry and to recruit new Knights. This is an open event so bring your family, friends and especially prospective Knights to cheer on the Bears and to show what the Knights of Columbus and Holy Rosary Council are all about. The festivities begin at noon. Have a safe and enjoyable summer. Chaplain Report - Joseph P. Yannotta Contact Chaplain: jyannotta@comcast.net August is typically the month for vacations. Many people in the world today love to travel, and whether by auto, boat or air they find new and exciting places to spend time. They enjoy going from destination to destination seeing one thing after another. I suppose that if I had the resources, traveling is one thing I would do as well. In scripture the most traveled individual was Paul who was probably the greatest missionary that has ever served the Lord. When he lists some of the things he endured for the sake of the Gospel, one of the things he mentions is the fact that he was "in journeying often", 2 Cor. 11:26. As this great man moved from location to location, he did not do so as a mere tourist. Although the cities through which he traveled contained some of the wonders of the ancient world, Paul wasn't looking for a t-shirt or a key chain, nor was he just trying to fill his scrapbook with snapshots of the temple of Diana, the coliseum in Rome or the Parthenon in Athens. No, Paul's plans and purposes in traveling were far greater than such earthly things. He traveled from place to place not as a sightseer, but as a winner of souls. While on vacation this summer we may not be undertaking such a mission as Paul but, that does not mean that while away from home, we can forget who we are as Catholic Christians. 2 Cor. 5: 9 Therefore, we aspire to please him, whether we are at home or away. Like Paul, each and every day of our lives is our earthly journey, a journey to grow closer and deeper in our relationship to God. Through our worship, praise and prayer, God is always with us. So as we take to the highways and by-ways this summer, as we visit and see the wonders of God s creation in the landscape and the people we encounter along the way; as we search for new and exotic places to visit; let us keep our hearts and minds on what is really important and share the love of Christ with our families and with all those we meet in our travels. What does our pilgrimage say about us? Is our love for the Lord and for one another? Paul was a man who traveled, but as he traveled, he was working for the Master, seeking to bring men to Jesus! Through the grace of God our Father, may we shine for all to see the Light of Christ, this day and all the days to follow. A safe and blessed summer to all, Deacon Joseph P. 9 GRAND KNIGHT MESSAGE Greetings Brothers, Spouses and Friends of the Knights! This wraps up the August newsletter. On behalf of the council, my sincere thanks to all who volunteered their time on July 4 to work our booth at Frontier Days. It was an excellent mix of younger members and older members. Your collective spirit on July 4 was fodder for my message which appears below. The dictionary defines Unity the 2nd principle of our order as the state of being united or combined; a oneness of mind or feeling... and there is no question that the Knights of Columbus are a united band of brothers standing for certain values and with certain feelings. But how did that come to be? Our founder, Father Michael J. McGivney, struggled to ascertain how the Church might keep men from drifting away from the faith. How he might help men become better Catholics at the same time that they became better Americans. As a result, he chose UNITY as the second precept of the Knights. His vision for the Knights was based on the belief that Catholic men had an inherent dignity which would find its full flowering only as these men grew in holiness together through their vocation as husbands, fathers, providers and protectors. Knights are committed to the care of one another, to improve their communities and their church. When members cooperate with one another in any project for the good of others, they are implicitly acknowledging the worth of their brother. In every case, the beauty and dignity of our brothers are affirmed as we organize and share in the responsibility of every council project IN SERVICE TO ONE, IN SERVICE TO ALL. All Catholic men over the age of 18 along with their families are invited to learn more about the Knights by attending our social meetings held the 3rd Thursday of each month and other social events as they occur. Our business meetings, held the 1st Thursday of each month, are restricted to members. On behalf of your council officers, Vivat Jesus and Peace to All...
