That address, formally entitled, The Sinews of Peace, but best known for that evocative phrase, "An Iron Curtain has descended across the Continent," effectively marked the beginning of the Cold War and linked, forever, Fulton and Westminster College with Winston Churchill. Join the Christian Men s Fellowship Thursday, May 14, as we travel to Fulton Missouri to tour the Churchill Museum. We will leave the church at 10:30 a.m. by carpool, stop in Jefferson City for lunch, travel on to Fulton to tour the museum, and return to the church by early evening. Cost of the museum tour is $7.50, seniors 60 and older $6.50. Everyone is responsible for their own lunch and museum fee. Please contact Gregg Kissell at if you would like to go. Annual Summer Kickoff! Our May Fellowship Dinner on Sunday, May 17, is our annual Fish Fry. The Membership Committee and helpers will provide everything. We just need you to come and enjoy! Bring your family and friends and stay for a great lunch after the worship service. Donations will be accepted to help cover the costs. Page 8 Get Ready for Yard Sale Sunday, May 31 What is Dinner for Eight? An informal gathering of up to 8 folks who would enjoy getting better acquainted with a few other folks. Guests will be assigned to a host. Hosts will choose the time to meet and provide the main course and drinks, with guests requested to bring a side dish or dessert. Look for the clipboards in the entryway with sign-up sheets to either be a host or to be a guest. Put it on your calendar and come enjoy a fun evening over a great meal.

2 Sunday Morning Study (Before Church) 9 a.m. Greetings Everyone, Let me pause just a moment to welcome all our snowbirds home. It is good to see everyone together again in worship. We have experienced some wonderful things here at West Lake this year. We have been witness to four adults professing their faith in Jesus Christ through baptism, and have welcomed a total of ten new friends into our family here at West Lake. God is good! April was a busy month for us, Two Easter services and breakfast, Mother Daughter luncheon, Fellowship dinner, and hosting the Greater Lake Area Chorale not to mention all the other activities that happen during the month. The significance of all this came home to me when Ed Mock asked me do you realize how many guest have come through our doors while attending these events? The short answer is many. It is a time to meet new friends, to show off our church, and to let the community know our doors are open to everyone. Check your church calendars for all that is happening this summer. Something new will be our summer holiday schedule. On Sunday May 24 Memorial Weekend, Sunday July 5 Independence Weekend, and Sunday September 6 Labor Day Weekend, we will hold two services. We will begin with an early outdoor service (weather permitting) at 8:00 a.m. followed by breakfast from 8:30 10:30 and then 10:30 a.m. sanctuary worship service. Take advantage of these opportunities to invite someone to come and experience the life we share here at West Lake. Blessings, Kelly Which of these topics do you think would make a good study for a small group? Doing Good (8 sessions) Why Doing Good Matters So Much Doing Good - Where It All Begins The High Cost of Not Doing Good How Doing Good Will Change Your World Burning Questions (6 sessions) Who am I? Where do I come from? What is my purpose? What kind of person do I want to be? What really matters? What do I want out of life? Culture Shock (12 sessions) What ever happened to right and wrong? The search for truth about sex. What do you say to a gay friend? Understanding abortion today. The church and the environment. The church and politics. If you would be interested in participating in one of the groups, please contact me. Kent Elliott, or ELLIOTTFA@HOTMAIL.COM The topic receiving the most interest (from you) will start on May 3, 2015 in the Choir room. Sorry, but size will have to be limited due to space. I will let each of you know the results of the interest survey and which topic was chosen to covered. So, if you provide your name, phone number and address, I will contact you to see if you are interested in being part of the study chosen. It is ok to miss some sessions and there will be no homework, other than what you might wish to pursue on your own. Cost free. See you on May 3, 2015 at 9 a.m. in the Choir room Pentecost Special Offering May 24 The Church is one body, shining light in dark places and sharing a glimmer of hope to the hopeless. Since 2001, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has started 850 new Disciples churches, spreading the gospel to more than 60,000 individuals, who may not have had a relationship with Christ. We are still one body, sharing the light, growing and loving the life back into the Church. Our Pentecost Special Offering (above your regular giving) will be taken on Sunday, May 24. One half of your offering will be dedicated to each Region and Area and the other half will be used by Hope Partnership for Missional Transformation to support the new church ministry. Page 2

3 CWF CWF NEWS Carroll Rinker, President Christian Women s Fellowship I want to again express my appreciation to all who worked so hard to make our Mother-Daughter Luncheon a success. With Quilt Pieces as the theme, Mary Ellen Flinn and Diane Gilmore decorated Loehr Center in a beautiful way with quilts. Some participants also shared their personal quilts. Diane Shirk presented a program about her quilt representing the Underground Railway. The history she shared was fascinating. The 13 tables were brought to life by each of the hostesses: Joyce Chorpening, Mary Elliott, Diane Gilmore, Eldeen Hanke, Anita Hohnecker, Joyce Keck, Gail Renick, Carroll Rinker, Betty Snitker, and Janet Wilson. I really liked the fact that three of those tables were hosted by people outside our congregation. Four men from the congregation made the day a treat for everyone by being our servers: Kent Elliott, Mel McKeown, Ed Mock and Rick Pace. I will be looking forward to next year s luncheon. Our April meeting was hosted by Mary Cline and Coleen Modglin. They boosted our mood with bright spring colors. As usual, we enjoyed the great food shared by each member. But the important part of our meetings is the support we give through monetary donations to many worthy causes. Money raised in the Gift Shop, Yard and Bake Sale and Craft and Bake Sale, as well as our monthly collections, is directed to community organizations that benefit many people. Our next meeting is scheduled for May 12 at 11:30 a.m. Looking forward to seeing you there. Last Minute Gang Several articles ago I asked a question so that I could confirm or lay to rest the claim No body reads the newsletter. So far it looks like there is more truth to the claim than I wanted to admit. I had two responses. Here goes another try. Retiring is going from something, but I like the new word I heard - Refiring - which means you are going forward. As we get older, we tend to fall into ruts and become more risk-adverse. Refiring means that we approach life with gusto and see each day as an opportunity for adventure and learning, and embracing the days ahead with enthusiasm. You fire the head, the heart, the body, and the soul. Play, love, laugh - be spontaneous. Life is a very special occasion. I would like to propose the establishment of a Last Minute Gang. (If I propose it, I never expect someone else to do it, so I will.) The gang will consist of a small number of folks (8 maximum) who have to agree to only one rule If at the last minute someone calls and invites you to do something, unless you re previously committed, you ll say yes. There are absolutely no restrictions on who may join: single, married, young, old, member of the church or just a newsletter reader. All are welcome. It will only last for the month of May. How can I make it simpler? Let s break that old habit of plopping down in front of the TV does that really ring your bell? Contact me to join the Last Minute Gang. 5 GIVE OZARKS DAY The Community Foundation of the Ozarks and the Community Foundation of the Lake are sponsoring Give Ozarks Day on May 5, There are many agencies throughout Southwest Missouri taking part in this event. Three Food Pantries that serve the Lake of the Ozarks have joined together to raise funds to help meet the needs of our neighbors. Share the Harvest, Food for Morgan County, and Ivy Bend Food Pantry are promoting this event and would like your help. Give Ozarks Day is an internet-based fund raiser. Individuals (or groups) may go to the web site ( choose an agency and make a contribution. We also encourage you to contact one of the food pantries to learn about other ways you can help. Help make a difference in our community by making Give Ozarks Day a real success. 6 A NOTE OF THANKS West Lake Christian Church, We want to thank the church for graciously allowing us to use the Loehr Center for our tea and fashion show. We were so thrilled to have so many of the congregation ladies join in the festivity and support our efforts for all our service projects for Thank you, Sisters in Alpha Zeta Omega Dear West Lake Friends, Thanks to Kelly for being present during my surgery and to others for the many cards, prayers and phone calls. You are a wonderful group of Christians that support each other through thick and thin. God blesses us all. Arlene and I hope to be back at services by the end of the month. Nip Mohler Dear Friends, Thank you so much for your very kind donation. Your continuing generous support for our programs is a blessing. And because of this we, at LAMB House, are able to help so many of the unfortunate people who come to us. Regretfully, their numbers seem to be on the increase every year. May God bless you all. Maureen Berry, Corresponding Secretary Dear members of West Lake Christian Church, Thank you for your recent donation. Spring has arrived, and many of our clients have been able to return to their seasonal jobs: for that we give thanks. There are, however, all of life s emergencies that crop up; illness, separation from spouse, fire, death in the family, accidents, disability, etc. We are blessed because you chose to support and help us so that we, in turn, can help our clients as they struggle to meet life s challenges. Thank you for your gift. Nancy Beese, Director, Community for Christ Lost and Found I have a silver table knife that may belong to one of the Mother-Daughter Luncheon hostesses.
