3 Know and Do: Learning and Living the Word of God Just Do It! What a great branding phrase for NIKE. Yet, long before that brand existed the concept of just do it became the theme of James. In five short chapters, James challenges believers to KNOW AND DO what s right. For some, it s a problem of knowing. Do we really know what the Word of God teaches? Do we know what to do with wealth? Do we know how to treat people fairly? Do we know the tie between our faith and our deeds? Do we know the results of selfish ambition? For others it s a problem of doing. All the Bible knowledge in the world is absolutely worthless unless we DO what it says. Increasing our knowledge of Scripture is unproductive when it is detached from actions. In our study KNOW AND DO: Learning and Living the Word of God, our team of teaching pastors will lead our study of the book of James to increase our knowledge of the Bible so we can truly be doers of the Word! 6 Hey, MS students, you won t want to miss this year s Fanning the Flame. We get to hear from Dan Hamrick and be led in worship by Brock O Dell. It s going to be a great time! He ll bring along actual dinosaur bones and fossils to explore God s design for the universe and God s plan for us! -Pastor Ben You won t want to miss FTF s adults and high school track. The four communicators have significant ties to NMC and HSM. Two are NMC grads. Three are former interns. One is a high school pastor. 8 7. Doing Life Together James 1-5 Knowing and doing the Word is never accomplished in isolation. It s impossible to become the person God desires apart from other people. God uses relationships and people in our lives to knock off our rough edges, encourage us through the hard times and rejoice with us in the good times. Doing life together is not a cute motto but an imperative to do the Word. James uses the word brother(s) times. 9 WEEK 7 Devotional Guide Through the course of this series we want to invite you to dive into the book of James. Each week will involve reading the same section multiple times to allow God s word to deeply settle in (deeply KNOW) and consider how to put it into practice (DO). Here s the big layout: Week 1: Read all of James in one sitting 3 different times. Week 2: Read James 1 every day. Week 3: Read James 2 every day. Week 4: Read James 3 every day. Week 5: Read James 4 every day. Week 6: Read James 5 every day. Week 7: Read all of James in one sitting 3 different times. Week 1: Read all of James in one sitting 3 different times. When the book of James was written there was no chapter and verse breakdown. It was a letter written to the twelve tribes (Jewish people) spread across the nations. This week, allow your reading to focus on gaining a perspective on the book as a whole by reading the entire epistle in one sitting at least three different times. As you read, don t stop and dwell on a specific chapter, verse or statement. After reading the entire book, take time to respond/journal in the following ways: After reading the first time: If you were to sum up the overall message of the book of James in one sentence, what would it be? As you look at the sentence you ve written, what do you hope to gain from your journey through James? Let this be in the form of a written or spoken prayer. After reading the second time: What are 4 or 5 topics James is calling us to KNOW about our faith journey? As you look at those 4 or 5 topics, what are some of your initial thoughts on what God may be calling you to DO with all this? After reading the third time: Make a list of the most significant lessons you ve learned since beginning this study. What do you KNOW after reading James? What are you going to DO because of this?
