Welcome to San Tan Bible Church Winter Camp 2018! I am so excited about what God is going to do in each of our hearts this weekend through fellowship centered on the Word of God. Our focus this weekend is Fear God or Fear Man. We are going to explore many passages of the Bible together and look at what God says about how we should live for an Audience of One. Pray with me that God encourages us by His grace to leave camp with not only a deeper understanding of what the Bible says about fearing God over man, but also a passion to implement those truths in our daily walk with God. We are going to have fun together this weekend! Get to know some new friends, grow closer with old friends, and make lots of great memories together! Here are a few tips to make camp go well for everyone: 1. Move in threes 2. Sleep is sacred 3. No pranks unless approved by an adult 4. Stay in your assigned cabin only 3

Friday Evening: Session #1 What is the Fear of Man? 1 The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe. Proverbs 29:25 Read the following quote and diagnostic questions and then describe what the phrase Fear of Man means to you personally. Many of the people I ve talked to also had an awakening when they saw the controlling power of other people. They awoke to an epidemic of soul called, in biblical language, the fear of man. Although, they were avowed worshippers of the true God, below the surface they feared other people. That is not to say that they were terrified by or afraid of others (although sometimes they were). Fear in the biblical sense is a much broader word. It includes being afraid of someone, but it extends to holding someone in awe, being controlled or mastered by people, worshipping other people, putting your trust in people, or needing people. However you put it, the fear of man can be summarized this way: We replace God with people. Instead of a biblically guided fear of the Lord, we fear others. Ed Welch, When People Are Big and God Is Small Diagnostic Questions: Ø Have you ever struggled with peer pressure? Ø Do you need something from your friends? Do you need them to listen to you? Respect you? Do you need them to fulfill a certain role you desire? Ø Do you ever feel as though you might be exposed as an imposter? 5

Ø Are you always second-guessing decisions because of what other people might think? Are you afraid to risk? Ø Do you feel empty or meaningless? Do you experience love hunger? Ø Do you get easily embarrassed? Ø Do you ever lie, especially the little white lies? Ø Do you avoid people? Ø When you compare yourself with other people, do you feel good about yourself? Ø Have you ever been too timid to share your faith in Christ? 1. What do we Fear? 2. Why do we Fear Man? 3. What does Scripture say about the fear of man? It originated at the. (Gen. 3:6-7) It is (Luke 12:4-5) It is a trap. (Prov. 29:25) It is opposed to. (I John 4:18) It minimizes. (Rom. 8:35, 38-39) Examples in Scripture of those who feared man more than God: 6

4. What does the fear of man produce in our lives? Conclusion: We fear man because we do not fear God or we do not fear God enough. Questions for Reflection & Discussion 1. What do you think of when you hear the phrase fear of man? What did you write down at the beginning? Would you modify your answers in any way? 2. Was there one diagnostic question that was convicting to you more than the others? 3. Out of the three categories of fearing man discussed (being exposed, rejected, harmed), which one do you relate with the most? 4. What passage of Scripture or Biblical example of those who feared man stood out to you tonight and why? 5. Discuss the connection between some of the products of fearing men (discontent, unhealthy dependence, cynicism, and bitterness) and the reasons people fear man (past experience, pride, needs-based view of people, wrong view of what we deserve). 7

Saturday Morning Devotional Step 1: Spend a few minutes in prayer talking to God. Ask him to open your eyes to understand his Word and be open to apply it honestly to your life. Step 2: This morning I want you to spend your devotional time preparing for our 2 nd teaching session. We will be looking at the Fear of God and I want you to see just how much the Bible speaks about this topic. Open your Bible and look up all the verses listed below (or at least as many as you have time for!). Summarize each passage in your own words. I Should Fear God because He is WORTHY! Ø Ps. 2:10-11 Ø Ps. 89:7 Ø Ps. 90:11 Ø Ps. 27:1 I should Fear God because it is for my OWN GOOD! Ø Ps.111:10/Prov.1:7 Ø Ps. 115:11 8

Ø Ps. 115:13 Ø Ps. 118:4 Ø Ps. 23:4 Ø Ps. 25:14 Ø Ps. 27:3 Ø Ps. 31:19 Ø Ps. 33:18 Ø Ps. 34:4 9

Ø Ps. 34:9 Ø Ps. 103:11 Ø Ps. 103:13 Ø Ps. 111:5 Ø Ps. 130:4 Ø Ps. 145:19 Ø Ps. 147:11 Ø Prov.10:27 Ø Prov.15:33 10

Ø Prov. 16:6 Ø Prov. 22:4 As you read verses in Psalms and Proverbs, did you notice the great insight and understanding they give us regarding the fear of the Lord? The fear of the Lord is intimately tied to our own happiness and holiness. Never separate holiness (right living) from happiness. Psalms and Proverbs describe present and future reality as they portray the kingship of God over the world and the destiny of the world to be judged in its present attempt to throw God off as its ruler. Psalms and Proverbs (as wisdom literature) instruct us that the good and rational life is living in a right fear of the Lord. Step 3: Memorize & Meditate Go through the Scriptures above and write out your favorite one and start to memorize it. You can write it below several times. Try circling and underlining words that stand out to you. 11

Saturday Morning: Session #2 What is the Fear of God? The basic idea behind the fear of the Lord, is much broader than our modern understanding of fear. While the holiness of God will leave many knees knocking when Jesus comes again, a mature fear of the Lord is more akin to awe, devotion, and worship. It is a response that says, Your glory is irresistible. In your presence, nothing else matters. You are all that I desire. Furthermore, it is a response that is active. It does something. It is not simply a passive devotion; it follows Christ in obedience. It searches out his will and can t wait to do it. Ed Welch, Addictions Definition: Reverent that leads to trust and worship 1. Who should fear God Ps. 33:8 Ps. 36:1 Rom 14:11 2. Why should we fear God? God s Design Gen 1:26-27 God s Worthy Our own Good 3. What happens when we don t fear God? Gen 3 The Worst Exchange Rom 1:23 Alienation from God. Alienation toward each other. 12

4. What does the fear of God look like in action? Ps. 22:23 They give. Ps. 66:16 They listen to. Ps. 76:8 They are. Ps. 86:11 They are and have an undivided heart. Ps. 119:63 They follow His. Ps. 119:74 They hope in the. Ps. 119:79 They understand His. Ps. 119:120 They stand in of God s laws. Ps. 128:1 They in His ways. Prov. 3:7 Not being in your own eyes (humility) Prov. 8:13 of evil Prov. 14:2 Their walk is. Examples in Scripture of those who feared God more than man: 5. How do we begin to put on the fear of God? Meditate on the Gospel! The greatest exchange (2 Cor 5:21) Study the character of God. Repent of pride (Prov 3:7) Application: How does the fear of God help me when I fear man? Conclusion: To fear God is to reverently submit to Him in such a way that leads to obedience and worship. It is to happily and joyfully obey Him. 13

Saturday Evening: Session #3 How Do We Fear Man? At the root of all experiences of shame is the sense that we have been exposed and uncovered. We know ourselves to be something other than what we hoped. And this revelation often comes when others come to see, accidentally and without warning, a side to us about which we feel vulnerable and embarrassed. We feel as if we have been wounded by what they now know, so the fear of scorn is part of the experience of shame, as is anxiety. David Wells, Losing Our Virtue 1. Fear of Exposure Ø Why do we fear being exposed? (Gen. 2:25, 3:7) Ø How do we demonstrate fear and avoid being exposed? Ø Examples of shame and fear of exposure in Scripture Ø In what ways are you fearing exposure before others? 2. Fear of Rejection He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. -Isaiah 53:3 14

Ø How do we manifest fear that other people will reject us? Ø How fearing rejection and craving approval harms us Ø How Pride fuels our fear of rejection If the fear of man is the fire that rages within our hearts, then pride is the wood and oxygen that fuels the blaze. Ø Fear of Rejection Seen in Scripture o Fear of rejection is idolatry. (Romans 1:25) o Saul s fear of rejection by the people (I Samuel 15:18) o The Jewish Leaders (John 12:42 43) o Peter at Antioch with the Jews (Galatians 2:11 12) o Pilate before the crowd (Mark 15:15) o Jesus was and is rejected (Is. 53) Putting our rejection in perspective Rejected that we might be accepted (Ephesians 2) He is able to sympathize with our rejections. (Hebrews 4) Conclusion: Ø Realize the true rejection to fear (Matthew 7:21-23). Ø Realize the true acceptance to hope Ø Realize the true family to love. 15

Sunday Morning Devotional Step 1: Spend a few minutes in prayer talking to God. Ask him to open your eyes to understand his Word and be open to apply it honestly to your life. Step 2: This morning I want you to spend your devotional time doing two things: 1. Read Psalm Write out answers to the following questions. Once you are done answering the questions, go find someone who is also done and share your answers with each other. 1. What s one thing you could do this year to increase your enjoyment of God? 2. What s the most humanly impossible thing you will ask God to do this year? 3. What s the single most important thing you could do to improve the quality of your family life this year? 4. In which spiritual discipline do you most want to make progress this year, and what will you do about it? 5. What is the single biggest time-waster in your life, and what will you do about it this year? 6. What is the most helpful new way you could strengthen your church? 7. For whose salvation will you pray most fervently this year? 16

8. What s the most important way you will, by God s grace, try to make this year different from last year? 9. What one thing could you do to improve your prayer life this year? 10. What single thing that you plan to do this year will matter most in ten years? In eternity? 2 When we think of ourselves as alone and isolated, we will always be prone to fear other people. Isolation and the fear of man are close companions. Yet when we truly understand that God has called us to participate in a larger family (i.e., the church), we are free. Church begins to feel a little more like a family sitting with us in our living room. Better yet, we feel like a family sitting together at the feet of Jesus, sitting around the throne. With family, there is no selfconsciousness, no embarrassment, no fear. -Ed Welch, When People are Big and God is Small 17

Sunday Morning: Session #4 Loving & Fearing, Not Fearing & Needing There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. (1 John 4:18) 1. Reorient your life to God 2. Reorient your life to Others Ø Who Do we need to love and serve? o Enemies (Luke 6:27-33) o Neighbors (Matthew 22:39) o Family o Christians (Gal. 6:10) o God (Matthew 22:37-38) Ø What does this love and serving look like? (1 Cor 13) God loved us first He loves the ones we fear. Ø How do we carry out a heart of love? -Consider motivation. -Look to Jesus (Philippians 2:3-7). -Pray and confess. -Minister to others in specific ways. 18

Ø Results of loving and serving rather than fearing and needing -Unity -Genuine respect and appreciation for others -Fruit of the Spirit 19
