AM I TRULY FOLLOWING JESUS? Bible Study Am I Truly Following Jesus? Self-Evaluation This is a follow-up Bible study for the guided self-evaluation, Am I Truly Following Jesus? which is included on pages 3 and 4. The purpose is to provide an opportunity to reflect on what the Scriptures say about the areas of faith and obedience covered in the evaluation. This is not a legalistic test to see how well you are obeying the laws of Scripture. The purpose is to give the Holy Spirit an opportunity to speak to your heart as you read the Bible. He can show areas that need improvement, and He can also give confidence that you are walking in faith and obedience. Men look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). Week 1 begins with lessons on surrendering our lives to Jesus. It is difficult to study faith and obedience if we do not make the necessary commitment to the Lordship of Christ in our hearts. The remaining weeks of this study deal with the topics of faith and obedience covered in the selfevaluation. You may choose to take a few weeks and focus on those areas where you need improvement. You don t have to go through all 13 weeks before moving on to another study. Instructions This Bible study can be used independently, but we highly encourage you to do it with a few other people because we learn so much from others. Each week has seven daily lessons on a common theme. The reading for Day 1 of each week (in bold italics) should be discussed in the study group. The remaining lessons are for personal study. 1 st Week During your small group meeting the first week: 1. Read aloud the introduction and Week 1 comments, A Call to Surrender Yourself to God, found on page 5. Discuss these comments before reading the Bible verses for Day Read aloud the verses for Day 1 (in bold italics) on page 9, make observations, and discuss the meaning of the verses. 3. Finally, discuss how to apply these verses to your lives. An illustration of this method is given below. (Example for Day 1.) During the remainder of the week, study the daily verses on your own by using the method of observing, interpreting, and applying. Record what you are learning each day. This will make it easier to share with others at the next meeting and will also help you remember what you are learning. To maintain a close walk with God, spend time daily with Him in His Word. 2 nd and Following Weeks During the small group meeting the second week: 1. Spend the first half of the time sharing how you each applied the lessons of the past week to your life. 2. During the second half of your time together, discuss the comments for the coming week s lesson, and read aloud the verses for Day 1 of that week ( in bold italics), then discuss them together. (You may want to focus on a few key topics, or let individual members work on personal areas on their own.) Again, during the remainder of the week, study the daily verses on your own. Page 1 of 12
Self-Evaluation Am I Truly Following Jesus? Example for Day 1 As you read the Scripture for each day, use this pattern of study: Observe What does the Bible say? For example, in Matthew 16:24, Jesus says, If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Interpret What does the Bible mean? What does it mean to deny myself and take up my cross? Deny myself indicates I should put the interests of Christ before my own interests. Take up my cross suggests the suffering and the humiliation I may experience in the process. Apply What truths can I put into practice, and what changes should I make? Am I willing to do this? What are the alternatives? Jesus says whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for Jesus will find it. Those who never accept Christ lose eternal life in His presence. Those who are Christians can lose the Goddirected life He wants them to experience here on earth. God has created me for a special purpose, but to fulfill that purpose, I need to give up my own plans. Am I willing to take that step of faith and experience all that God has for me? Some days may have only a few verses to read, while other days may have a chapter. Whatever the reading may be, take time to think about the passage and how it applies to your life. As you study, allow the Holy Spirit to lead you into a greater understanding of God. This can be helped by sharing what you are learning with others. Paul instructed Timothy: The Challenge The things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others (2 Timothy 2:2). Anything that does not reproduce dies out. Therefore, it is not enough for you to gain a deeper relationship with God. For Christ s church to grow, believers need to faithfully plant the seeds of faith in others as well. The Good News must not stop with you. God wants you to reproduce spiritually by introducing others to faith in Jesus and helping them grow in their faith. At the very beginning of the study, we strongly urge each person to commit to helping others go through the study. These others might be your own family, your friends, or your co-workers. You can start such a group anytime you feel comfortable with the material you have already learned. You don t have to wait until the end of the study. Enjoy the Bible study! May the Lord bless you greatly, and may He use you to help others grow in their relationship with Him CCCI All rights reserved. Reprints of unchanged studies allowed. 3 AM I TRULY FOLLOWING JESUS? A Guided Self-Evaluation Am I Truly Following Jesus? Self-Evaluation Jesus gave a clear command to anyone who wanted to follow Him: If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me (Matthew 16:24). We are also told, Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God this is your spiritual act of worship (Romans 12:1). But what does it mean to deny myself, take up my cross, and follow Jesus? How do I offer my body as a living sacrifice? There is an old hymn, Trust and Obey, that helps us understand. The chorus goes like this: Trust and obey For there s no other way To be happy in Jesus But to trust and obey. The Bible tells us that without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). Jesus says, If you love me, you will obey what I command (John 14:15). The purpose of this self-examination is to review common areas of your life and see how well you are doing in terms of faith and obedience. Hopefully, this will be an examination by the Holy Spirit as you allow Him to reveal areas where you need to trust and obey more. It is not a legalistic test to see how well you are obeying the laws of Scripture. This is really about your will. Are you willing to trust God and obey what He shows you? Think through the questions below, and score yourself in each area. They are not all-inclusive, but they cover some major areas. Use the following rating system: Rating Explanation 1 This area really needs improvement! 2 I see signs of hope, but I am still falling far short of God s mark. 3 I m probably okay compared to others, but I m still short of what God desires. 4 I m usually doing well, but there could be improvements. 5 God thinks I am doing well in this area and is pleased with me. Areas of Faith Faith is the real challenge. Ask yourself, Is God sovereign over every detail of my life? Do I believe that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28)? How am I doing? Let s look at some key areas: 1. Do I seek God s guidance in the decisions of my life, such as the career I choose, the person I marry, the house or car I buy, etc? Or am I working from my own criteria of what I want in life? 2. Do I trust God and look for His guidance in the financial challenges I face, or do I try to work out my own solutions without consulting Him? 3. When I face various health problems, do I pray with faith and seek the prayers of others, or do I assume doctors are the only ones with the answers? 4. Do I give thanks for everything that comes into my life, believing that God is sovereign and is working things together for good, or do I get worried and anxious at the various turn of events, perhaps even blaming God for my misfortunes? Page 3 of 12
Self-Evaluation Am I Truly Following Jesus? 5. Do I view prayer as a vital part of my life, or is prayer more of a ritual without much confidence that God is listening and acting? 6. Do I have other areas where the Holy Spirit is encouraging me to have more faith? What are they, and how am I doing? Areas of Obedience God expects each of His children to be holy as He is holy (1 Peter 1:15), and He gives us the power to do so through His Holy Spirit. Of course, this depends on our maturity in the Lord. We do not expect a three-year-old to act like a thirty-year-old, and neither does God. But He does expect us to obey what He has revealed to each of us. Jesus said, If you love me, you will obey what I command (John 14:15). Let s take a look at how you are doing, particularly in some major areas of temptation in our society. 1. Am I content with God s provision of my worldly belongings, or do I have an unhealthy desire for more and more? 2. Do I control my desires for the opposite sex, or do I harbor immoral temptations and fantasies? Do I flee from anything that tempts me in this area of my life? 3. Does my life demonstrate humility, or does it demonstrate pride? Am I considerate of others, or is life all about me? 4. Do I demonstrate genuine love for others, or am I primarily concerned with myself? Do I show love to those who hate me, as God instructs me to do (Matthew 5:43-48)? 5. Am I careful to always tell the truth, or do I stretch the truth when I think it is to my advantage and I won t be caught? 6. Are there other areas of obedience where the Holy Spirit is convicting me? What are they, and how am I doing? God s concern is that you score a 5 on each of the areas above (or any others). If you scored less than 5, the solution is simple. You need to confess any shortcomings to God, and thank Him that He has already forgiven you. Then you need to ask Him to take control of your life once again and give you the wisdom and discipline to live a life pleasing to Him. Now think through some specific action steps that will help you correct any shortcomings in faith and obedience. Look up some Bible verses that relate to your specific areas of challenge and memorize them. (If you only have this self-evaluation, see the companion Bible study. It is also available at no charge from the website, Keep your action steps in mind over the coming weeks, and be quick to respond in obedience. As a Christian, you may still sin occasionally, but you are no longer a slave to sin (Romans 6:17, 18). Finally, if you are not already doing it, get into the Bible on a daily basis. Pray about everything in your life, and develop an attitude of thankfulness over each circumstance, believing that God has either caused it or allowed it to happen for your good (Romans 8:28). It is difficult, if not impossible, to truly follow Jesus without developing these daily habits. Hopefully, this short self-examination will help you truly follow Jesus. Periodically check these and other areas of your life to make sure you continue to follow Him. Page 4 of 12
BRIEF COMMENTS ON AM I TRULY FOLLOWING JESUS? Am I Truly Following Jesus? Self-Evaluation If we are to truly follow Jesus, faith and obedience are both important. This study explores what the Bible has to say about each of these two critical areas of our lives. Remember, God wants us to be holy as He is holy (1 Peter 1:15). As you read through these verses and think about them, don t be content with living a mediocre spiritual life. Work to please God and follow Jesus. WEEK 1 A Call to Surrender Yourself to God A life that truly pleases God must first be founded on a deep sense of surrender to Him. Jesus made it clear that you can t be half-committed. You are either with Him or against Him. The passages in this first lesson help give practical meaning to the surrender God is asking you to make. The lesson ends with the Lord s advice to the church in Laodicea. They thought they were rich and needed nothing. But Jesus saw them as wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. His advice to them was to buy from me gold refined in the fire [our faith], so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear [righteous deeds], so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes [spiritual insight], so you can see (Revelation 3:18). The real question is: What can we give Jesus in order to buy these things? The answer is simple: He wants our lives. Then He gives us the faith, the righteous deeds, and the insight to see spiritual truths. Faith The Bible tells us that without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). But what is faith, and how much do we need? How do we get faith? How does this apply to our everyday lives? The lessons below explore these questions. WEEK 2 Importance of Faith Everything revolves around faith. And our faith comes from God. It is not something we generate ourselves, for God has allotted to each a measure of faith (Romans 12:3 NASB). It is important that we don t merely have faith in the existence of God, but that we also believe in His participation in our daily lives. We have no greater privilege on earth than to walk with God. This should be our goal. That s why we need to listen to the Holy Spirit to know God s will. Then we must act on the faith that He gives us so that we can continue to grow in our faith. WEEK 3 Life Directions God is in control whether we listen to Him or not. But how much better it is to know God s will and allow Him to direct us. God wants us to pray about everything because that brings Him glory as we see His answers. Prayer also strengthens our faith. Unfortunately, many Christians simply throw their prayers in the air and expect God to direct them. But God wants a relationship with us, just as a father has with his child. That implies a two-way conversation. Developing such a relationship with God can give us clear direction and help keep us out of a lot of trouble. WEEK 4 Finances God makes it abundantly clear that He will always take care of His children. Yet we have such a difficult time trusting Him with this area. When we have sufficient funds, we begin to depend on them rather than God. Jesus made it clear that no one can serve two masters. We cannot serve both God and money, even though we keep trying to do so. Walking by faith in the area of our Page 5 of 12
Self-Evaluation Am I Truly Following Jesus? finances requires a clear sense of God s continual leading to help us avoid slipping into idolatry. An idol is anything you trust rather than God, and money is a prime candidate. WEEK 5 Health The Gospels (the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) document the importance of faith in physical healing. Many people have seen the power of prayer as other Christians have prayed for them. When we are sick, James 5:13-16 instructs us to call for the elders of our church to pray for us and anoint us with oil. Many people lack the faith in healing prayer because they know people are not healed every time. They miss the key element: It is the prayer offered in faith that heals. If God, in His wisdom, chooses not to heal, then He will not give us the necessary faith to pray for healing. Regardless of the outcome, we should begin with prayer and seek to know His will. Then God can heal by any means He wants. He may choose to heal miraculously. He may use the doctors and the medical knowledge He has provided. Or, in His wisdom, He may choose not to heal. One of our responsibilities as believers is to avoid harmful activities that may make us sick. Proverbs tells us that respecting God and living righteously is a great way to stay healthy and live a long life (3:7, 8; 10:27). Also, our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit, so we should take care of them (1 Corinthians 6:19). But faith is not the guarantee of good health. Many godly men and women have not sinned yet have suffered, just as Job suffered. We simply need to believe in God s sovereignty and love for us and leave our future to Him. WEEK 6 Thankfulness God has promised that all things work together for good for those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). Yet we are so quick to doubt this. We forget that God is sovereign over every detail of our lives. The story of Job clearly demonstrates that God either causes something to happen or He allows it for His purposes. Satan cannot do anything he wants. Giving thanks to God when things go wrong is a beautiful way to demonstrate our faith in Him and His promises. It also allows us to gain His perspective and even see His solution to our problems. An unthankful attitude, on the other hand, opens us up to the discipline of God, as Romans 1:18-32 clearly warns. So it is best to be thankful for everything, even the bad things, believing that God has allowed them for a purpose and that they will ultimately prove to be for our good. WEEK 7 Prayer What an awesome privilege we have to come before the Creator God of the universe and make our requests known! He promises that He will grant every request that is according to His will. But how often do we really take advantage of this right as a child of God? We may find when we get to heaven that prayer was the area of our lives where our faith was tested the most. Some conditions must be met for our prayers to be answered. We must obey His commands and live a life that pleases Him, harboring no unconfessed sin in our life. We must pray according to His will, believing in faith that He hears and will answer. It is easy to meet these requirements when we are truly following Jesus. Obedience In His great love, God gave us moral laws for our protection. It only makes sense that we should obey them. Breaking God s laws always brings bad consequences, yet we usually think, It Page 6 of 12
Am I Truly Following Jesus? Self-Evaluation won t happen to me. It will. Someone once said that wisdom is understanding the consequences of our actions. The Scriptures give us that wisdom. WEEK 8 Importance of Obedience Why is obedience so important? First, it clearly demonstrates how much we love Christ. Second, it protects us from bad consequences. God promises blessings to those who obey, and He promises bad consequences to those who disobey. The choice should be easy! WEEK 9 Materialism Materialism is a pressing issue for many people. The issue is complicated because it is not simply a question of being rich or poor. God clearly blesses people and gives them wealth. However, others get their wealth by worldly means and misuse it. The secret lies in being content with much or with little. We should not love the things of the world because what is highly valued among men is detestable in God s sight (Luke 16:15). Jesus made it clear that no man can serve two masters, for he will love the one and hate the other. You can t serve God and money at the same time. We need to seriously study God s instructions on this subject. WEEK 10 Sexual Purity Sexual immorality is not a new sin, but this sin has grown enormously over the past 50 years. The problems that result from sexual immorality are obvious in terms of sexual diseases and broken homes. But consequences go far deeper and are not seen. The Bible says of marriage that the two will become one flesh and warns us to flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body (1 Corinthians 6:16-18). We need to be forearmed so that when temptations arise, we can resist. WEEK 11 Humility Pride was the root of Satan s sin, and it is the root of all our sins as well. Pride is a very dangerous thing, and we are warned to guard against it. Failure to avoid pride will lead to disastrous consequences. Christ gave us an example of how to live in humility. It would be good to frequently measure our lives against the yardstick provided in Philippians 2:1-11. WEEK 12 Love of Others Loving others is the second greatest commandment after loving God first. Our love for one another is proof to the world that we are Christ s disciples. God even commands us to love our enemies. Loving others is a great challenge and can only be done by faith, asking God to put that love in our hearts. WEEK 13 Truthfulness Proverbs 23:23 tells us to buy truth and do not sell it. Sometimes it costs us to be honest. And sometimes we are tempted to sell our honesty to gain something. How much are you willing to sell your integrity for: 25 cents at the parking meter? $1,000 on your tax return? We need to be faithful in the smallest things. Jesus says, Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much (Luke 16:10). So we need to be faithful and always tell the truth, even in little things CCCI All rights reserved. Reprints of unchanged studies allowed. Contact: trulyfollowingjesus@ccci.org Page 7 of 12
