6 TOGETHER IN SCRIPTURE John Chapter 10 Context: Setting the Table The first four chapters of John s Gospel introduce the witnesses to Jesus and depict a variety of initial responses to the launch of his ministry. Chapters five and six record the increasing rejection that Jesus faced from both the leaders and crowds, despite the power of his signs. The first part of this chapter concludes the account of Jesus s visit to Jerusalem at the Feast of Tabernacles from chapters seven through nine while the second part briefly records a visit at the feast of dedication. Content: Hearing the Text Read John 10 together out loud. Credo: Believing the Truth Jesus is the true and only Good Shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep all other would-be shepherds are hirelings, thieves, and robbers. He is the true and only Door and all and only those who enter through him will receive the eternally abundant life that he offers. All of Jesus s sheep have been given to him by his Father and all who follow him are his sheep. His sheep are protected by the unified work of the Father, Son, and Spirit and therefore no one who truly belongs to him will ever perish. Conduct: Reshaping Our Walk Discuss the meaning of the text and then walk through the following application questions as you discuss the difference this meaning ought to make in our lives today. Though Jesus has many sheep, he only has one flock and all and only those who enter through him belong to that flock. How might you be tempted to turn your preferences and opinions into a door of your own, casting out those who really belong to Jesus because they disagree with you or letting in those who really don t because they advance your agenda? Though all of Jesus s sheep follow him, those sheep are not kept from perishing by how well they follow but by who they follow. What are some of the ways in which we can replace trust in our Shepherd with the security of our own performance?

All of Grace is a simple and eloquent presentation of salvation through grace alone. This classic text brought into contemporary English is both a perfect introduction to salvation and an assurance of it for unbelievers and the saved alike.
