A SERVICE OF WORSHIP THE LORD S DAY November 18, 2018 that in everything he might be preeminent Colossians 1:18
WELCOME TO CHRIST COVENANT CHURCH We are glad you are here to worship the living God! This worship folder is intended to walk you through the service, as well as provide you with devotional material to take home. On page 11 are several introductory paragraphs on why we worship the way we do. You may find these helpful as you prepare your hearts for worship. IN PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP The metaphors of living waters flowing, seas roaring, and thirst being quenched permeate our scripture readings. Our hymns and songs respond to these great promises with thanksgiving. Together we approach God s throne to bring praise, we see our need for Christ, and adore him as the living water. Greeting and Announcements 2 SERVICE OF WORSHIP 10:45 a.m. Scripture Meditation Zechariah 14:8 On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter. Prelude Call to Worship 1 Chronicles 16:8 13, Leader: Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! ALL: Sing to him; sing praises to him, tell of all his wondrous works! Leader: Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice! ALL: Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually! Leader: Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles and the judgments he uttered, ALL: O offspring of Israel his servant, children of Jacob, his chosen ones! Leader: Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice, and let them say among the nations, The LORD reigns! ALL: Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it! Leader: Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. ALL: Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! Leader: Say also: Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather and deliver us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise. ALL: Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting!

Old Testament Responsive Reading Exodus 17:1 7 All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the LORD, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, Give us water to drink. And Moses said to them, Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the LORD? But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst? So Moses cried to the LORD, What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me. And the LORD said to Moses, Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink. And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the LORD by saying, Is the LORD among us or not? Prayer of Confession of Sin Assurance of Grace Revelation 7:13 17 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come? I said to him, Sir, you know. And he said to me, These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! 5
Congregational Song Before the Throne of God Above Sovereign Grace Worship; Text: Charitie Bancroft, 1863; Music: Vikki Cook, Giving of Tithes and Offerings Parents, you may escort your pre-school aged children to Children s Bible Time (B-102) after the collection bag has passed your pew. Thank you. Offertory My Jesus, I Love Thee My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine; for thee all the follies of sin I resign; My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art thou: if ever I loved thee, my Jesus 'tis now. I love thee because thou hast first loved me, And purchased my pardon on Calvary's tree. I love thee for wearing the thorns on thy brow: If ever I loved thee, my Jesus 'tis now In mansions of glory and endless delight, I'll ever adore thee in heaven so bright; I'll sing with the glittering crown on my brow: If ever I loved thee, my Jesus 'tis now. My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art thou: if ever I loved thee, my Jesus 'tis now. Text: Adoniram Gordon; Music: William R Featherstone; arr. By Paul Sjolund

Prelude Shout for Joy, Psalm 68 Call to Worship Psalm 68:32 35 Leader: O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God; sing praises to the Lord, to him who rides in the heavens, the ancient heavens; ALL: Behold, he sends out his voice, his mighty voice. Leader: Ascribe power to God, whose majesty is over Israel, and whose power is in the skies. ALL: Awesome is God from his sanctuary; the God of Israel he is the one who gives power and strength to his people. Blessed be God! Prayer of Invocation Congregational Hymn #98 Now Thank We All Our God New Testament Reading 1 Peter 3:18 4:2 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him. Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. 11 THE BIBLICAL PATTERN OF WORSHIP Almost every church has an order of service and a familiar pattern of doing things, which means almost every church has a liturgy. The best liturgies don t draw attention to themselves, but facilitate worship that is rich, rooted, and biblical. Our liturgy has four basic parts. PRAISE: We are called to worship and offer songs and prayers of praise and adoration. RENEWAL: We read the Scriptures, confess our sins, and are reminded of God s grace. PROCLAMATION: We hear from God through the preached word. RESPONSE: We resolve to follow God and are sent out as witnesses to Christ. We see this overarching pattern in the covenant renewal ceremonies of Scripture and in various divine encounters. In Isaiah 6, for example, Isaiah comes before God and praises him; then he confesses sin and seeks renewal; God then speaks his word to Isaiah; and finally, Isaiah responds with commitment to God. This is also a gospel pattern: we approach God in awe, we see our sin, we hear the good news, and we respond in faith and obedience. PRINCIPLES OF WORSHIP There is nothing more important in life than worship. We all worship something or someone. The only question is whether we will worship the right One in the right way. In particular, we want our worship services on Sunday to be pleasing to Him. To gather with God s people on the Lord s Day to worship at God s throne under the authority of God s word is our solemn duty and joyful privilege. It s with that supreme goal in mind that we hold to a number of values when it comes to corporate worship. These include: GLORY TO GOD: Worship is for our Triune God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. FOCUSED ON THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST: Jesus life, death, and resurrection are not only what we sing about and proclaim in worship, it s what makes worship possible. BIBLICAL: The whole service teaches God s people, so everything the prayers, the songs, the preaching must be manifestly biblical. EMPHASIZING THE ORDINARY MEANS OF GRACE: God can work in many ways, but he has committed to being with us and transforming us through prayer, preaching, and the sacraments of the Lord s Supper and Baptism. REFORMED: The Church has been thinking about how to worship for centuries. We want to learn from our spiritual ancestors and build on their models. To that end, we regularly employ the Ten Commandments, creeds, confessions, catechisms, responsive readings, doxologies, and other forms that have been common in church history. THE AUDIENCES OF WORSHIP We have probably all heard that there is an audience of one in worship. While the sentiment is a good one that focuses our attention on God, we must keep in mind that a worship service is intended to be a table set for two. Certainly, we speak, sing, and pray to God. Yet, we also speak and sing to ourselves and to each other in worship. Even more importantly, God speaks to us! A worship service should both please God and edify the body of Christ. So, at times certain elements are focused on God, while at other times they are chosen because they speak to us. All of worship is intended to glorify God and disciple us. 11
