2 God of grace and glory, On this Independence weekend we give thanks for the freedoms in this country that we take for granted, yet most of all we give thanks for the freedom to worship you. Above all, you are our rock and our foundation. Even as we celebrate our nation, O God, may we honor you in interactions with all of your children. May we live by love not hate, hope not fear. May we find ways to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with you. Guide our national and local leaders to turn to your discerning wisdom in making decisions that benefit the whole, not just some. Forgive our rancor and divisions in this heated political season. Guide us to strive for your peace and your presence in all of our relationships. Amen. Let us remember in prayer those grieving the loss of their loved one, and remember in thanksgiving the life and ministry of: Rev. Gregory C. 5 LOCAL CHURCH AND COMMUNITY EVENTS Lifetree Café Coping with Loss How to heal after an unexpected tragedy will be explored at Lifetree Café on Thursday, July 7, 2016 from 7-8 pm. The program, titled The Art of Loss: How Tragedy Can Transform Your Perspective, features filmed interviews with two young artists who experienced the loss of a loved one. Both artists coped through their art. For me, painting is a documentation of a moment. It s as if the painting understands me, one of the artists says. When I couldn t find words, or words weren t big enough, a canvas or a piece of Masonite was able to relate to me and process things for me. During the program, Lifetree participants will have the opportunity to consider times they have experienced loss and how they responded. Admission to the 60-minute event is free. Lifetree Café is located in The Bachwell Center for Music and Dance at 116 N. Washington Street, Van Wert, Ohio Please enter the handicap accessible entrance on Court Street. Parking is available in the courthouse lots. Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable setting. Questions about Lifetree may be directed to First United Methodist Church at or firstchurch@wcoil.com. Lifetree discussion for July 14 - Laughter IS The Best Medicine. 7 WEST OHIO CONNECTION AND BEYOND VIM PROJECT - NICARAGUA A Volunteers In Mission team is forming for work in Managua, Nicaragua. The dates are October 8-16 with an optional 4-day extension for sightseeing. The team will be working with Fundacion El Samaritano with whom Methodist teams have been working annually since Work will focus on children in a Christian school operated by the foundation. There will be additional humanitarian projects with maternity and women's oncology hospital visitations, and a children's feeding program at a Nicaragua Methodist church. Time for worship, shopping, sightseeing will also be included. The cost is $1450 per volunteer. If you have questions about this mission or would like a brochure and application, contact Jack Reif at jack.reif@zoomtown.com Faith & Money Academy Financial pressures often prevent churches from fully pursuing their mission to the community, and a high percentage of clergy enter ministry without the skills needed to raise funds. In addition, churches are often resistant to talking about money in the context of faith. In a collaborative effort, the Episcopal Office, Cabinet, Office of Ministry, and the Council on Development are sponsoring the nationally acclaimed "Faith and Money Academy" for clergy from the West and East Ohio conferences. The Academy is a four-day, intensive seminar covering stewardship for annual giving, church capital campaigns, and planned giving. The cost for West Ohio clergy is $200 and includes registration, hotel, resources, and most meals. If you need scholarship assistance, please contact Rev. George Cooper or your District Superintendent. Click here for more information or to register. Spirit-Filled Living Conference Aldersgate 2016 will be held July in the Lexington Convention Center in Lexington, KY. However, when we are beginning to experience burnout, the desire to give up actually increases to the point we either begin to shop our name to other churches or consider quitting the ministry altogether.
