For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage. Matthew 2:2 The wise from the east were honored by the invitation to the birth of Jesus. We think they were of way of the Zoroastrian religion. Somehow they became familiar with the Jewish faith and the promise of a messiah. Most likely this occurred when Cyrus the Great sent the Israelites home and some of the Jewish people taught the Persians their scriptures about God s promise to restore them to their land. The method of Zoroastrian notification through astronomical signs appears strange to us and may still remain a mystery to our understanding of how God makes God known to humanity. It is a reminder that God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways. God continues to speak. Several things may cause us to miss God s voice. First, we may think God quit speaking. Once the Bible was written God went silent and nothing more needs to be said. The Word of God is a living word that continues to seek out those who will listen. Second, God may speak in ways we do not anticipate. It is not always through the wise and the powerful that God speaks. God may use a child, the weak, and even those who are lost. If our minds are closed to the varieties of way that God speaks we may miss God s voice. Third, we may simply not be listening. I think God is always speaking. God s voice and language is written into the very atoms of existence and into the DNA of life. God s voice may be so omnipresent that we no longer listen for the Word of God. As we enter into a new year we anticipate a rising star. Not a human star, but a guiding light from the Holy Spirit that illumines everyone (John 1:9). Our devotional book, Disciplines, is designed to help each of us experience the light. From the last Sunday of last year consider this word to us from that book: What if our night prayer from this time onward - a prayer to guide our resolutions and hopes, whatever they may be - could rise out of God s word: Through this night, O God, and in every waking moment, clothe me with your love. Bind me in perfect harmony to everything you love, and open my heart more and more each day to carry the peace of Christ. Amen.

3 Seniors on the Go Rick Williams and the vocal music group from Moore Central Junior High School sang Christmas songs for Seniors on the Go on December 13, 2018, when the Seniors met in Fellowship Hall for their monthly fellowship luncheon. Hosts and hostesses were Kenna and Mike Johnson, Marilyn Gouldy, Charla Payne and Dale Bergman. 48 members attended. Gerald Krows, travel coordinator, announced two upcoming programs. On Thursday, January 17 a van will leave a 9:15 a.m. for the Armstrong Theater Auditorium, north of Edmond, to view the seals of Isaiah and King Hezekiah. The Seniors will have lunch at MacMcNear s Buffet in Edmond, then visit the Oklahoma History Center where there are two special exhibits. The cost is $6, and members are responsible for the cost of their own lunch. Please reserve by January 10. On Monday, February 11, at 4:30 p.m. a van will go to the Oklahoma History Center for an organ program, Outside the Box (Not your regular Kilgen organ program.), by organist Nathan Avakran. Tickets are $20 and are available January 25. Dinner is on your own at Furr s Cafeteria. Lila Mulkey shared those ailing and those on the mend: A sympathy card was sent to Sam Day on the death of his wife, with a Thinking of You card going to Jim Johnson following carpal tunnel surgery, to Dale Bergman who had a very bad fall and Elaine Bergman who had pneumonia. President Joyce Statton announced the next meeting will be on January 10. So come and enjoy the food, fellowship and fun. Thank You We want to thank all of the members of our church for their continued support in providing food for the 18 funeral dinners we have hosted this year. We are blessed that our church has a place where the family can all be together and remember their loved one while enjoying a meal together. They are always very grateful. Without your continued support this ministry would not be possible. Thank you, again. UMW Funeral Dinner Committee Onward and Upward by Bo Ireland Philippians 3:14 The Message I m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward to Jesus. I m off and running, and I m not turning back. Happy New Year! The time of year we all seek to provide a remedy to one hindrance or another. More than likely you are still trying to identify the resolution you will make or you have already broken that resolution and given up. The struggle rages as we each seek to identify or shrug off personal defects and impediments. I personally cannot count how many years I have set goals that were physical, mental, or spiritual in an effort to make myself a better person. The offending defect has been identified and plan of action in hand, I set to work, ready for the new improved version of me. You know, Person 2.0. Whether it was to exercise and lose 20 pounds, or at least crack the cover of my Bible and spend a couple moments in prayer daily, or practice some kind of mental health (Sudoku and some kind of mental floss) or something like meditation. I am a great starter but soon stumble on the disciplined path or fall down completely. Small shortfalls often introduce an attitude of guilt and remorse that can lead me give up. Even the one year that I set what I thought would be the easiest and most attainable goal of not shaving for a year, I still caved in and shaved after a couple months. My crisis is that my goals are always self-centered. Even my best and purest moments have the lurking notion that I will receive some benefit from my resolve or resolution. What if, (and it is a big IF ) if I recognize that each year I fall short of even the easiest of resolutions and am aware that I only participate in them to make myself better, I was to embrace the idea that in my aim at perfection I can lean into God s grace and find that I am making small steps forward and remember that Christ is reaching out for me if I will only take His hand. This thought frees me to remain a work in progress and I grow towards perfection. I am not stating that willfully treading into sin is acceptable, but am grateful that when I allow for a margin of human error I find God in the margins. This allows me to become who God wants me to be in the midst of my bumbling efforts. So often if I cannot maintain the structure or discipline from start to finish, then I throw out the whole process because I fell short once. There is grace in failure as long as we look onward and upward as we get up and try to become more like Christ with each stumble or fall.

4 Singing Seniors! Decision Making at Moore 1 st United Methodist Church This is a plea for more Singing Seniors, especially basses! This is a special group, bound together by years of singing, good times and laughter. We would love for you to be a part of it. No previous music reading or experience necessary. We will have our first 2019 rehearsal January 13 at 3:30 p.m. in the choir room. Come join us! For more information contact Phyllis Nichols: pan1954@cox.net Music & Worship Ministries Kickoff! January 2019! Epiphany Sunday, January 6, Communion Wednesday, January 9, Exaltation Bells/Chancel Choir, Kids Chimes & Children s Choir Rehearsals. Sunday, January 13, Singing Seniors Rehearsal. Have you ever sung in a choir or rung a hand bell? Now is the time to try something new! Join us this season as we begin to prepare for the Lenten season leading us to Easter! Behold, I am doing a new thing. (Isaiah 43:19) For more information: ginny.pass@moorechurch.com We are holding a Town Hall Meeting on Sunday January 13 at 5:30 p.m. After the meeting will be the first Church Council of One of the major items on the agenda will be passing the Financial Operating Budget for Several decisions are in process as we come to the end of the year. The Town Hall will have three main items: First: New Leadership was selected at the Church Council in November and then passed at our Annual Church Conference also in November. New people are in new positions and we will be discussing how our committee structure presently works. We will also be looking at ways to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of our decision making in order to better connect with our mission field. Leadership is chosen to provide spiritual direction for Ministry in Hospitality, Offering Christ, Purpose, and Engagement. Second: The Oklahoma Conference has recommended churches look at Single Board Governance rather than the multiple committee structure we have for administration. Here is a link to follow for more information: attachments/5645afcd8f c79df8/1-okumccrdistrictsimplifed-accountablegov-ldrshpmodel docx Ministry teams would still exist in various areas of ministry but The Church Council, Staff Parish Relation Committee, Finance Committees, and Trustees would all merge into one single board. In today s fast changing world our churches need to be able to flex with our environment and make decisions that empower the mission of the church to be in ministry with our community. Any decision to make this change could not occur until the year 2020, however, we can look at ways to streamline our decision making to be more responsive to our community s needs. Third: The Way Forward is being discussed by our national Church. We will begin a discussion of what this may mean to us here in the Moore mission field. The discussion on this area will only be briefly described. A future meeting may be necessary to fully discuss the future of the United Methodist Church.

5 United Methodist Women (UMW) The cold and flu season is here. The UMW would like to show our support to Central Junior High by bringing wipes, tissues and hand sanitizer to the General Meeting January 9 th at 11:30 am.
