2 Living out Love Spring break week is an important week for us at by Mark Nelson We are very thankful for the support we the Coyote BSM. It is important because of two receive from our churches. We cannot do this things. The first is the midpoint of the semester. ministry without your being here. Continue to Students have been care-free up to this point in pray for us and our students we serve. Continue the semester. If studying and grades were not a to pray for student leadership to be developed for priority then this is a time for the students to get the upcoming semesters and for ways to impact busy studying and trying to pull up their grades. If our campus. This past month we served they have studied and are feeling good about students weekly through the ministries of the where they stand in their classes then it is an Coyote BSM. We are engaged in discipleship accomplishment that they can be proud of. In with 4-9 students weekly on our campuses. either case, Spring break signifies the beginning of the end. Finals are just about a month away! The second effect spring break has is the way this week changes what we do at the BSM. We will continue to do our lunches during the week and extra Bible studies that we are doing, but the effect is seen in the numbers of students we will see. Our focus needs to shift to building for the future. Between now and the end of the semester is a great time for me to be intentional with individual students. It is a time to invest in building up potential leaders for the upcoming year. It is an opportunity to also invest in training and leading students to make the most of each day they are on campus. 2

3 If You re a Disciple, It s What You Do by John Thielepape One might debate whether you can save money by purchasing car insurance from GEICO, but most would agree that the company creates memorable, though sometimes quirky, marketing campaigns. In a campaign that began in 2014, a package of commercials shows people in funny or weird situations ending with the narrator saying, If you, then you It s what you do. For example, If you re in a horror movie, you make poor decisions. It s what you do. Or, If you re a cat, you ignore people. It s what you do. And, If you re a couple, you fight over directions. It s what you do. The premise is acted out in some kind of parody before the narrator says, If you want to save 15% or more on car insurance, you switch to GEICO. It s what you do. So, I began to wonder, if you re a disciple then what do you do? I have a starting list. First, if you are a disciple then you demonstrate a witness for Jesus. Before Jesus ascended into heaven in Acts 1, He told His followers that, you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. A short time later, when the Sanhedrin instructed Peter and John not to speak or teach in the name of Jesus, they replied, For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard. Paul wrote to the Corinthians, Yet when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, for I am compelled to preach. And again, John wrote, We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. Our temptation though, is to bear witness to our frustrations, fears, or prejudices. If we give into our fears or frustrations then we simply give testimony to our own emptiness that depletes life. But if we are effective disciples, then we demonstrate a consistent witness to the life-giving power and grace of Jesus. It s what you do. Second, if you are a disciple then you love. As Jesus said, you love God, you love your neighbor as yourself, and you love one another within the community of disciples. In fact, the proof of our discipleship is our love for one another. John wrote, Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Scripture describes love in active terms, defined by God s demonstration of love toward us by sending Jesus Christ to die for us. When Jesus created a picture of love for our neighbor, He used a Samaritan as opposed to a couple of religious leaders. As Bob Goff says in his book, Love Does, In the end, love doesn t just keep thinking about it or keep planning for it. Simply put: love does. If you are a disciple, then you love as Jesus loved. It s what you do. Third, if you are a disciple then you serve. In Matthew 20, Jesus quelled an argument among the Twelve over who could be the greatest in the Kingdom. Greatness in the Kingdom is directly related to being a servant, just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. The prophet Micah answered the question of what the Lord requires of us by writing, To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Our self-absorbed world tempts us to dwell upon how we can be served, or what others should do for us. But if you are a disciple of Jesus then you serve others. It s what you do. 3

First Baptist Church Horseshoe Bend is located at 7156 Brazos Trail, Weatherford, TX New Hope Baptist Church, Boyd celebrated the completion of its new children/youth education building on Sunday, March 26 at 11:00am. This historic church was founded in 1875, and located in the Briar/Reno area on New Hope Rd, off of Knob Hill Rd., where Parker, Wise, and Tarrant counties come together. On May 21st of this year the church will celebrate 142 years of its existence. The church s old sanctuary was built in It was demolished in The church completed its new sanctuary in After its completion, the church began to raise the funds, demolish the old buildings, and build the new 6400 square foot building for its children and youth. With the demolition of the old sanctuary and educational space, the church had to make some early decisions.

5 Continued... The old sanctuary had become a food pantry, feeding up to 250 people per month. That facility would have to be demolished to make room for the new education space. The church voted to spend its first money, not on the new children/youth building, but on a new pantry. The pastor said, Believing that we are commanded to love our neighbors as ourselves, we wanted to spend our first money on our neighbors. That pantry now feeds from people per month on the third Tuesday of each month. The pantry s success is due to supporters both inside and outside the membership of the church. The pantry ministry appreciates and welcomes monetary support from contributors with a heart for families in need. With the pantry complete, the children/youth building was built. Dauenhauer & Associates built the outside structure while members of the church framed the inside structure. Although sub-contractors were hired along the way, most of the work inside the building was completed by members of the church. The church wishes to thank all of the workers and contributors both inside and outside of its membership. Pastor Jim Edwards, celebrating 25 years as the church s pastor this year, said, We are grateful first to our Lord for helping us accomplish what seemed beyond our means. Our sanctuary and new children/youth building were built debt-free! Thank you to all who have helped make this possible. We have hosted over 100 children during summer Vacation Bible School, and this new space will help us reach many more families. WinShape Camp WinShape Camps, the summer camp program started by Chick-fil-A founder, S. Truett Cathy, is coming to town with a one-week day camp experience for children that have completed grades 1 through 9. Camp will be held June 5-9, 2017 in Downtown Weatherford (FBC Weatherford facilities). Last year was the first year Weatherford hosted WinShape Camps for Communities. In the first year, there were 142 campers, 53 volunteers, and 28 WinShape camp staffers. The campers that participated represented 30 area churches but the largest single group represented came from unchurched families and made up 23% of the campers. Chick-fil-A, Inc. president and CEO, Dan T. Cathy said, I love WinShape Camps, and I have seen first-hand the immeasurable impact these programs can have on children and their families. It s an experience that will stay with them long after they return to their homes, churches, schools and communities. WinShape Camps for Communities boasts 21 different camp skills, including: sports, dance, cooking, gymnastics, leaders in training, painting, arts and crafts, wacky science and much more. Campers enjoy 4 full days (7:45 am 4:55 PM) of worship, team building, skills training, Bible study and more, and then participate in Chick-fil-A Family Fun Day with their entire family (featuring lunch provided by Chick-fil-A) on Friday! No matter what the campers like to do, says Day Camps Director, Gabe Norris, they ll be amazed at the fun they will have at WinShape Camps for Communities. There really is something for everyone, and we can t wait to share the summer of a lifetime with your community. 7 Community Impact Team Unveils Initiative for Vulnerable Children and Teenagers In January, out of 87 Parker County children placed in foster care by State authorities, 78 of them had been placed outside of the county due to a shortage of trained foster families. According to Foster Care Placement Specialist Dustin Gist, children and teenagers are placed in foster care each month in the region that includes Parker, Palo Pinto, Tarrant, Johnson, Hood, Somervell and Erath Counties. At the time of his visit with the Association s Community Impact Team, 100 children from the region were needing placement in a foster home. As part of our Loving Parker County campaign, the Community Impact team has designed an initiative for churches to demonstrate the love of Christ to vulnerable children and teenagers in Parker County. Churches, small groups, Sunday School classes can choose from a variety of options to create awareness, generate momentum, or create a sustainable ministry focused upon these issues. The outline of the initiative is listed below. You can go to our website and click on the link for this initiative to learn more, or to send in a request to get connected. Watch for more information as we continue to build this initiative, along with others, to fulfill our goal to mobilize a movement of believers in Parker County to love our neighbors as Jesus first loved us so that every person in Parker County can experience a personal interaction with the love and grace of Jesus on multiple occasions. Vulnerable Children and Teens Initiative: Affirm and restore the dignity of vulnerable children and teenagers who are at-risk, in foster care, or waiting adoption. Ways that churches/sunday School classes/small groups/individuals can connect: 1. Launching (generating exposure): Hold a one-time drive for the Foster Care Resource Center Host or advertise an awareness meeting or an awareness Sunday to outline the need for foster care and adoptive families Host a parent s night out for foster families 2. Engaging (Join with other churches, generating momentum): Organize wraparound care for a foster/adoptive family (grocery shopping, lawn care, babysitting, etc.) Organize a support system for a homeless teenager Connect with another church that provides mentors and ministry opportunities in a local school Host a missions fair to expose members to volunteer opportunities (CASA, Grace House, Freedom House, etc.) that address the needs of at-risk children and teenagers Regularly highlight testimonies of volunteers that serve in these areas 3. Advocating (Build a culture within the congregation, sustainable ministry): Train families within the church for foster care and respite care Organize ongoing support systems for foster care/adoptive families Adopt a local school for ministry; mentoring students, ministry to staff Organize ongoing support ministry for homeless and at-risk teenagers Ongoing recruitment of volunteers for CASA, Grace House, Freedom House, etc. 7
