4 Foreword Taking over a year to develop, the Youth and Family Committee, working with Tentmakers and other members of Christus Victor Lutheran, put together our Youth Ministry Management Plan, a dynamic document that acts as a blueprint for how we do youth ministry here. It s a document that we ll continue to tweak and update as necessary to make it relevant to youth ministry, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and the mission of Christus Victor Lutheran. To help you understand what our Youth Ministry Management Plan does, picture with me a meandering river. The river is analogous of youth ministry at Christus Victor Lutheran. Looking at the key components of a meandering river, you ve got a head, mouth, the water itself, river banks, and a floodplain. The head of the river symbolizes where we currently are in our youth ministry and conversely the mouth is where we want to go. The river itself is our ministry and the banks (the mission statement & ministry philosophy) help contain and guide our ministry on this journey. Finally, the floodplain is where we do not want to be because if we are in the floodplain, our ministry is all over the place and not heading towards the head. The Youth Ministry Management Plan helps to develop a united, congregationally owned and supported, vision, strategy, and plan for our youth ministry. It provides our church leadership and members with a broader and deeper understanding of what it takes to do effective youth ministry today. Finally it provides us with a springboard from which to develop or expand volunteer involvement in youth ministry. Inside you ll discover our mission statement, ministry philosophy, visions, goals, dreams, youth ministry structure, and position results descriptions. These key components create expectations, responsibilities, direction, and trust. Enjoy the hard work and ideas put forth from many of our adults and youth. It certainly was a process and our vocabulary has been expanded, but journey is long from over. 6 Ministry Philosophy Concrete concepts that will help us get a firmer grip on our ministry. These are the core values that support our mission statement. A ministry philosophy is The way we do youth ministry. Community Fellowship We gather together in God s name. (Matthew 18:20) Team Approach We support each other by offering our gifts and ideas and join together to strengthen the group. (Ecclesiastes 4:12) Impact Events The events and opportunities we provide leave a lasting impression on youth. (Luke 9:28-36) Safe, Affirming Environment We promise to provide a safe place where we accept and value each person. (Matthew 22:39) Leadership Mentoring We provide positive role models who offer guidance and support. (Matthew 5:16) Student Leadership We provide youth with opportunities to explore and develop leadership roles and become mentors in the church community. (1 Timothy 4:12) Adult Role Models/Parent Involvement We encourage parents and adults to participate in the youth ministry program and provide many opportunities for them to do so. (Proverbs 22:6) Setting Up Volunteers to Succeed We provide proper training and support for all volunteers to ensure success in their ministries. (Matthew 7:24-25) Service and Mission Outreach We open adult s and youth s eyes to the needs of the world when we provide opportunities to serve their communities. (Matthew 25:40) Vocation/Call Youth and adults working side by side to discover their gifts and seek God s call for their lives. (Romans 11:29) Worship/Prayer We remind youth their actions reflect and represent their dedication to God and Christ s presence in their lives. Each event will begin and end with prayer. 7 Vision As a result of being involved in CV s youth ministry, we hope our young people develop the following traits and characteristics. Prayer is a part of their daily lives - understanding types and purposes. Christ-centered. Having a way of life that follows Christ s example of love and service Understand their own beliefs, and willing to share them with others Desire to be involved in worship, praise, and church community Socially healthy (social contact with a wide variety of people, positive self-worth, compassionate, integrity, active listener) A ready volunteer in the community Willingness to be a life-long learner of scripture Continue to explore and use their spiritual gifts throughout life Aware of local and global humanity Know and understand God s love for them 7

8 Goals & Dreams As of 2009/2010 school calendar, here are our goals and dreams for the future. One Year Goals - Launch the Youth Ministry Management Plan and inform the congregation about the direction of Youth Ministry at Christus Victor Lutheran (Completed) - Restructure the Youth and Family Committee into a Youth Board and a Youth Ministry Team (Completed) - Schedule two lock-ins for the High School Youth and two lock-ins for the Middle School Youth (Completed) - Begin the planning process for an inter generational event (In process) - Gather information for a possible 2012 ELCA National Youth Gathering (Completed) - Research with the youth, Social Ministries, and Community Action Council to find more opportunities for youth to serve (Yet to Do) - Research what youth group would entail on Sunday night once Spirit Bound is done. This is something that might take the place of Sunday morning Bible study and Wednesday night youth group. 9 Strategy Our ministry strategy is modeled after what we see in the ministry of Jesus Christ. At the edge of Jesus ministry were the masses (Outreach) and pulled from the masses were the appointed 70/72 individuals who were sent out (Fellowship) two by two to spread the good news to everyone. Deeper in the circle we are shown the 12 disciples (Faith Nurture) who were the close followers/learns of Christ and with that group there was the inner circle of Peter, James, and John (Discipleship). That model is applied to our ministry like a funnel. Through the support of service, mission, team approach, and impact events it is the strategy of youth ministry at Christus Victor Lutheran to bring people in, keep them in, nurture their faith, and send them out to share their faith. If the funnel has healthy functioning, it continues to feed itself. If not, there is leakage. Summary of Strategy: Instead of having a one size fits all approach to ministry, we will involve youth at the level of commitment which they are comfortable and then encourage them to a deeper level of commitment. Ultimately, we would like to have them involved in student leadership where they are reaching out to their friends. 9

12 Youth Ministry Team Lock-Ins Main Objective: To work together with a team of adults and youth to plan, organize, facilitate, and lead three overnight events at the church for the youth and their friends to come and experience fellowship in a safe and welcoming environment. Need: One Middle School Lock-In One High School Lock-In One Combined Lock-In Leadership Supporting Goal: To help plan and implement the activities, games, and relational opportunities, which are part of the lock-in. 1. Gather as a team to organize each lock-in. a. Pick the dates b. Plan the events c. Create sign up sheets d. Communicate details to the youth and their families e. Organize potential volunteers 2. Provide direct leadership at activities and events. 3. Collect potential fees and release forms. Relational Ministry Supporting Goal: To build meaningful Christ-centered relationships with youth and provide them with positive role models. 1. Welcome participants. 2. Converse with the youth. 3. Be a positive role model by demonstrating a Christ-centered life. 4. Pray for our youth. Clean Up Supporting Goal: To return the church to a better condition than before the lock-in and see the youth off. 1. Organize clean up of the church. 2. Prepare and serve breakfast. 3. 13 Youth Ministry Team Faith Stepping Stones Main Objective: To work together with a team of adults and youth to plan, organize, and lead 6 sessions, during the school year, for youth and their parents to address key issues during their entry into adolescence and graduation years. Need: 3 Sessions for 6 th Graders and their parents (Curriculum Provided) 3 Sessions for 12 th Graders and their parents (Curriculum Provided) Leadership Supporting Goal: To help plan and implement the meal, activities, discussion, and relational opportunities, which are part of each faith stepping stone session. 1. Gather as a team to organize each stepping stone session. a. Pick the dates b. Plan the events c. Communicate details to the youth and their families d. Mail invites 2. Provide the food (you ll be reimbursed). 2. Teach the concepts. 3. Facilitate discussion. Relational Ministry Supporting Goal: To build meaningful Christ-centered relationships with youth and provide them with positive role models. 1. Welcome participants. 2. Converse with the families. 3. Be a positive role model by demonstrating a Christ-centered life. 4. Pray for our youth. Clean Up Supporting Goal: To return the class room to a better condition than before the faith stepping stone. 1. Organize clean up. 2. Wait for all families to leave before departing. 14 Youth Ministry Team DeKaF Main Objective: To work together with a team of adults and youth to plan, organize, and lead the Sunday morning middle school youth group from September to May so that the youth can connect with their friends at church and learn about their faith in creative ways. Leadership Supporting Goal: To help plan and implement the activities, teaching concepts, and relational opportunities, which are a part of DeKaF. 1. Gather as a team, in August, to organize the year. a. Plan out the calendar for the entire school year b. Create a theme for the school year to build the teaching concepts around c. Communicate details to the youth and their families d. Teach the concepts e. Organize volunteers to help out with breakfast events and field trips 2. Provide direct leadership each DeKaF class period. Relational Ministry Supporting Goal: To build meaningful Christ-centered relationships with youth and provide them with positive role models. 1. 15 Youth Ministry Team Special Events Main Objective: To work together with a team of adults and youth to plan, organize, and lead three special events during the school year where the youth can come and connect with their church friends and grow as a community. Need: One Middle School Special Event One High School Special Event One Combined Special Event Leadership Supporting Goal: To help plan and implement the activities, relational opportunities, and travel details, which are a part of each special event. 1. Gather as a team to organize each special event. a. Pick the dates b. Plan the events c. Communicate details to the youth and their families d. Create sign up sheets e. Encourage youth to participate f. Organize volunteers to help out 2. Provide direct leadership at the events. 3. Collect potential fees and release forms. Need: One Middle School Service Project One High School Service Project One Combined Service Project Leadership Supporting Goal: To help plan and implement the activities, relational opportunities, and travel details, which are a part of each service project. 1. 17 Youth Ministry Team Mission Trip Main Objective: To work together with a team of adults and youth to plan, organize, facilitate, and lead one week long mission trip, during the summer, for the high school youth so that they can get out of their surrounding area to grow in their faith journey, practice their faith skills, and help others in need. Supporting Goal: To help plan and implement the activities, relational opportunities, and travel details, which are a part of the mission trip. Leadership 1. Gather as a team, in October, to organize the mission trip. a. Pick the dates b. Plan the trip c. Communicate details to the youth and their families d. Create sign up sheets e. Encourage youth to participate f. Organize volunteers to participate 2. Collect deposits. 3. Organize potential fundraising. 4. Collect final payments and release forms. 5. Potentially provide direct leadership on the trip. 6. Debrief afterwards. Relational Ministry Supporting Goal: To build meaningful Christ-centered relationships with youth and provide them with positive role models. 1. Encourage youth who attend. 2. Converse with the youth. 3. Be a positive role model by demonstrating a Christ-centered life. 4. Pray for our youth. 18 Youth Ministry Team Senior Brunch Main Objective: To work together with a team of adults and youth to plan, organize, and facilitate one special hour between services in April or May for the graduating high school seniors (and their families) to celebrate them and their time in the church. Supporting Goal: To help plan and implement the decoration, meal and program, which are part of the senior brunch. Leadership 1. Gather as a team, in March, to organize the senior brunch. a. Pick a Sunday in April or May b. Plan the menu c. Coordinate details with pastors and youth director d. Create the program for the brunch e. Organize volunteers to help with the event e. Invite the high school seniors and their families 2. Delegate volunteers for decorating the Fellowship Hall and food preparation. 3. Provide direct leadership at the brunch. Relational Ministry Supporting Goal: To build meaningful Christ-centered relationships with youth and provide them with positive role models. 1. Welcome participants. 2. Converse with the families. 3. Be a positive role model by demonstrating a Christ-centered life. 4. Pray for our youth. Clean Up Supporting Goal: To return the Fellowship Hall and Kitchen to a better condition than when it was before the brunch began. 1. Organize the clean up. 2. 19 Youth Ministry Team College Care Packages Main Objective: To work together with a team of adults and youth to plan, organize, and facilitate the assembly of care packages, in January, to our college freshman living away from home to remind them of their church family at Christus Victor, provide then with hospitality and goodies while they re away from home. Supporting Goal: To help plan and pack care packages for our freshman college students living on campus. Leadership 1. Gather as a team, in December, to organize the care package process. a. Obtain who the freshman are from the Youth Director b. Contact their parents for current address and possible dietary concerns c. Pick out items to include in the care packages 2. Purchasing. a. Purchase items for care packages (you ll be reimbursed) b. Purchase appropriate number of cardboard boxes (you ll be reimbursed) 3. Gathering as a team, in January, to pack and prep each package for mail. a. Include notes of encouragement b. Seal and address c. give finished packages to Youth Director for mailing Term: Minimum of 1 Care Package Cycle 19

20 Youth Ministry Team Summer Trek Main Objective: To work together with a team of adults to plan, organize, facilitate, and lead a day of service and fellowship each month during the summer for our youth to stay connected with church and their friends while living out their faith. Need: One Service & Fellowship Day in June One Service & Fellowship Day in July One Service & Fellowship Day in August Leadership Supporting Goal: To help plan and implement the service project, fun event, relational opportunities, and travel details, which are part of each Summer Trek event. 1. Gather as a team, in March, to organize each service project. a. Brainstorm for possible service projects and fellowship opportunities b. Coordinate with outside organizations to set service projects and fellowship opportunities c. Determine dates and schedule each day d. Inform youth director of all details so registration forms can be mailed out e. Communicate details f. Organize volunteers to help 2. Provide direct leadership at each day. 21 Youth Ministry Team Photography Main Objective: To work together with a team of adults and youth to coordinate and take pictures at each youth function in order to capture memories and promote our youth ministry. Recommend having a Digital SLR camera Photography Supporting Goal: To help plan, implement, and finalize the taking of pictures at youth ministry functions 1. Coordinate with other team photographers to cover each youth ministry function. 2. Take appropriate exquisite posed and candid photographs at youth ministry functions. 3. Coordinate with the Youth Director to download pictures Relational Ministry Supporting Goal: To build meaningful Christ-centered relationships with youth and provide them with positive role models. 1. 22 Youth Ministry Team Wednesday Night Youth Group Main Objective: To work with a team of adults to plan, organize, facilitate, and lead high school youth group for an hour each week during the school year so the high school youth can take a break, connect with their friends, and grow in community. Leadership Supporting Goal: To help plan and implement the activities and relational opportunities, which are part of each youth group. 1. Gather as a team to organize each youth group. a. Plan the activities b. Set Up the Youth Room for each night 2. Provide direct leadership at each youth group. 23 Youth Ministry Team Sunday Morning Connections Main Objective: To work with a team of adults to plan, organize, facilitate, and lead an hour each Sunday between services during the school year for the high school youth so they can connect and talk about their faith in the world today. Gather as a team to organize each Sunday Morning Connection. a. Plan potential discussion topics for each Sunday b. Encourage youth to participate 2. Facilitate discussion. 24 Youth Ministry Team Confirmation Small Group Leader Main Objective: (Adult Specific) To be a faith mentor and lead a small group of boys or girls on Wednesday nights during their three years in confirmation so they can build community, enrich their faith journey, and respond to the promises made at their baptism. Leadership Supporting Goal: To help plan, implement, facilitate, and mentor a small group of youth for Confirmation. 1. Attend the large group Confirmation setting. 2. Work with the SWAT Team help to facilitate your small group. 3. Communicate details to youth and their families. 4. Lead discussion. 5. Organize your two small group service projects. 6. Organize your two small group fellowship events. 7. Be a faith mentor to your small group youth. Leadership Supporting Goal: To help support your specific ministry area. 1. Sign up for a specific SWAT Team ministry. a. Confirmation b. JIFY c. Recharge Worship d. Faith Trek e. DeKaF 2. Show up early and stay late to your specific ministry area. 3. Be a positive role model. 4. Attend SWAT Team gatherings for training and leadership development. Relational Ministry Supporting Goal: To build meaningful Christ-centered relationships with children/youth and provide them with positive role models. 1. Converse with the children/youth. 2. Be a positive role model by demonstrating a Christ-centered life. 3. Pray for the children/youth in your ministry area. Clean Up Supporting Goal: To return the space used to a better condition than before the ministry period and see the children/youth off. 1. Organize potential clean up. 2.
