2 2 Welcome to Stella Maris in Baileys Harbor, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Jacksonport, Sister Bay & Washington Island The appearances of Jesus after the resurrection help us in the discipline of discipleship by how they challenge the disciples and ultimately everyone to grow in love. The iconic scene is on the side of the Sea of Galilee in John s gospel when Jesus is with the disciples after they have been fishing and He has served them a meal. Jesus asks Peter if he loves him three times. Peter is forced to respond three times in the affirmative. Each time, Peter is also asked to do something to show that love. It would be frustrating for any of us to have someone (especially Jesus) ask us three times the same question, especially if the answer is obvious to us and we do love Jesus but that is precisely the point. We assume that we love the Lord as Peter did but do we really love Him as much as we think and He wants or realize the full implications of that love. In our sinfulness, we first assume that we love as fully as we should without really understanding what Jesus means by love especially what the full implications are. The questions of whether we love Jesus, Dear Fellow Parishioners how much that love lives up to Jesus' desires and how much that love not only transforms us but also the world around us, should be asked every day at least once. They are the kinds of questions which are at the heart of good prayer, good discipleship and good moral living in general. If we are not even asking the questions, we are not very far along on our discipleship journey. Notice how Peter was not asking himself the questions and needed to be challenged by Jesus himself. Our reading, studying and praying the scriptures, especially that passage is meant to help us to know how to do those kinds of things and to help us to do them as if Jesus was still with us to help with that kind of spiritual work. Although lent is meant to be a time of great personal growth, the Easter season also has great potential for that kind of growth as well. Lent challenges us to embrace the suffering and death of Jesus in self-denial, taking up our cross and suffering ourselves. The Easter season challenges us after we have been emptied out to open ourselves up to all that God offers us with the new life of grace to be filled. What a challenge that task can be as well! For some reason, we human beings often struggle with talking about our ability to love, the actual love in our relationships and how we can grow in our ability to love. It amazes me how even married couples rarely if ever talk about how their love is helping their relationship and how they can grow in it. Relationships of any kind cannot improve or even be what they are meant to be unless people take the time and make the effort to honestly talk about them and the only ingredient which makes them to be what they are meant to be (love) while resolving to do something about it. Our relationship with God is not any different. If we are not constantly seeking greater love from and with God which manifests in our love for others, then we are not growing as disciples, true followers of the Lord. In Christ s love, Fr. Dave Ruby, Pastor Adult Faith Formation For the past year we have been reading our Mission and Vision Statements before many of our Masses as well as the start of our various committee meetings. If you are reading this column I am sure you have recited these at least once and most likely many times. There are a few key ideas included in these that would be good to reflect on and hopefully make part of your life. In our Mission Statement we recite we prayerfully unite. It is only through prayer and God s grace that we can hope to come together as one parish and one people to love Jesus. We ask our patron Mary to lead us to her son. We have talked about discipleship and our call to be disciples of Jesus. But we know we are on a journey to get there and our vision helps us to see where it is we want to go. We call all to share the Gospel, respond to Jesus love by using the gifts God has given us and serve one another. Finally we want all to grow in their faith journey (no matter where you are today) and to participate in our parish life. None of this is easy and that is why we invite you to journey together. That is why we have defined five values which we hold dear to give some concrete ways to take this journey. Since the beginning of the year we have talked at Mass about four of these values; Welcome and Hospitality, Prayer, Allowing the Holy Spirit to work through us and Breaking the Silence. Next month we will cover the fifth Value of Sharing the Joy. We will continue to share these values and discuss ways we can live them to continue to help on our journey. If you have not yet taken one of our Bookmarks with all of this information, please take one on your way out of church today. Put it where you will see it to help make our mission and vision so much more than words. Health & Wellness AVOID A ROUND-TRIP TICKET BACK TO THE HOSPITAL: CONTACT YOUR FAITH COMMUNITY NURSE! The last thing you want to do when you leave the hospital after an illness is to return. Yet, 1 in 5 older adults do just that they make a return visit within one month of being discharged. According to a leading study, the risk of returning to the hospital remains high for months or even a year following discharge, influenced in part, on why you were first admitted. Your first days home from the hospital pose a number of risks. You are still recovering from the illness that required inpatient care. You have increased odds of developing additional conditions unrelated to your original diagnosis. Stress, changes in medications and exposure to new infections create a dangerous mix. Reducing risk starts in the hospital. Healthcare professionals are: working to reduce the risk of infections, working with the patient on overall health habits encouraging proper nutrition, exercise and rest. What should I watch for and should I do if I develop problems? What medicines do I need and how do I take them? Do I need assistance with mobility or modifications to my home? If you have some expertise in this area and can help recommend how to improve our situation we need your advice. 4 5 Sixth Sunday of Easter-May 21, 2017 Worship and Music Column Welcome to all who worship with us at Stella Maris Parish! In order to fully participate in our liturgy, please know that our hymns are posted on the hymn boards and are found in our hymnbooks or in our blue worship guide. The Mass we are singing is found in the blue worship guide and the revised psalms are found in the white psalm guides. The month of May is traditionally dedicated to Mary, our Blessed Mother and our parish patron under her title, Stella Maris, Latin for Star of the Sea. As we are journeying to become Jesus disciples, the following prayer by Pope Francis to Our Blessed Mother seemed fitting to include in this column; especially with his reference to Mary being star of the new evangelization. The prayer is from the Pope s apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, The Joy of the Gospel. Mary, Virgin and Mother, Obtain for us now a new ardor born of the resurrection, that we may bring to all the Gospel of life which triumphs over death. Give us a holy courage to seek new paths, that the gift of unfading beauty may reach every man and woman. Star of the new evangelization, help us to bear radiant witness to communion, service, ardent and generous faith, justice and love of the poor, that the joy of the Gospel may reach to the ends of the earth, illuminating even the fringes of our world. Infant Baptism The baptism of new babies and young children revitalizes our faith community. Please contact the parish office to make arrangements for baptism. Adult Initiation The Catholic Church is always enriched whenever any adult chooses to be Catholic. Adults wishing to be baptized, or baptized adults wishing to be confirmed, the RCIA program is available. Reconciliation God s great mercy is something to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God s unconditional love in the sacrament of reconciliation. Our pastor is available for this sacrament on the 1st Thursday of the month from 5:00-6:00 pm at our Baileys Harbor site (except holidays) and by appointment. Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joyful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation. Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compassion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encouraged to notify the office to arrange for visits or communion.
