Meet Our Newest Members Chuck & Jackie Hughes have moved here from Paullina, Iowa. Chuck was a school teacher and coach; and Jackie worked for the federal government. They are both retired; but stay active with their grandchildren, golf, fishing, traveling, UNI Panthers, and many other hobbies. They have two children Heather (Jon) Rottink of Marshalltown and Chas (Shishonee) Hughes of North Liberty, and five grandchildren. Chuck & Jackie moved to Marshalltown to be near family. Welcome to First Presbyterian Church, Chuck & Jackie. Cathy Pearson: Cathy s first comment when being interviewed was that she loves the Lord. She is a telemarketer professional, so she asks that if she calls you don t hang up! Cathy enjoys crocheting and knitting and enjoys encouraging her friends. Cathy and Reena have been in our fellowship for some time so we are glad to welcome them as members. We met her daughter Reena April 24, with the Confirmation class. Ed, Natalia, Stefan, and Derek Peng: Please welcome the Peng family back to Marshalltown and as new members to our church. Ed works at Fisher Emerson and recently completed a four-year assignment with his family in Beijing, China. Ed and his boys all enjoy golf, while you already have enjoyed listening to Derek and Stefan playing the violin for church service. Natalia enjoys gardening and quilting, and has already been invited to Sarah Circle. Derek is 12 years old, in 6th grade and also enjoys tennis and basketball. Stefan is a senior at MHS and has plans to attend ISU this coming fall in their Engineering department. He also swims, plays golf and tennis as an MHS Bobcat. We welcome a very active Peng family to First Presbyterian Church! Julie Turner is the daughter of Marge and Jim Wolfe and grew up in Marshalltown. Julie is a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in Management Information Services. She is employed at Emerson. She has two sons, Ben, 22 years of age and Sam, 18 years of age. Ben will graduate from U.N.I. next spring, and Sam will be a freshman at U.N.I. in the fall. During her free time, Julie enjoys traveling, scrapbooking, and reading. She has volunteered in the church for VBS and other church activities. In the future, she would like to be involved in church committee work. Welcome to First Presbyterian Church, Julie. Deb Williams: Deb Williams is joining the church that she called home nearly 20 years ago. She is highly involved in the church nursery ministry and can be found supporting our little ones most every Sunday. She is highly involved in a support group that currently meets in The Gathering Place. This group comes together to support individuals who may be struggling with various forms of mental illness. Deb felt pulled back to First Presbyterian when she saw the sense of calm and joy that came over her mother when she attended church. She is excited to be a part of our church and engage in more activities that support our youngest churchgoers. Welcome to First Presbyterian Church, Deb. 3 Thank You, Marylou Marylou Beckmann has been involved in Christian education at this church in many ways, and she will be greatly missed as she retires and moves to Virginia with Pastor Dave. Recently, Marylou has taught Children s Church each Sunday and been a regular Wednesday Club volunteer for several years. She also picked up several children from school and brought them to the Gathering Place each week. Marylou s gentle spirit, hard work and heart for service will be greatly missed. God bless you in your new adventures. Annual I-Cubs Baseball Game The M&I Committee is planning the annual I-Cubs baseball game on Sunday, June 12, at 1:00 p.m. Cost of the tickets is $10. If we get at least 25 people to sign up, we will get the tickets at the reduced price of $7. The cut-off date for ordering tickets is Sunday, June 5. Tickets must be prepaid. Please sign up on the board in the Narthex if you would like to attend the game. We hope that you will join us for all the fun! Gas for Mission Trip The children have raised $ with their noisy mission bucket offering since last July. This is enough to cover the gas for one van to journey to Lorain, Ohio, and back for the youth mission trip. It will also get the second van as far as South Bend, Indiana, or cover its tolls one way. May 29, will be the last coin offering before the youth mission trip. Operation Christmas Child The Operation Christmas Child boxes we filled last year went to Kenya, a country in East Africa, and the home of Pastor Rich s friend Rev. David Githii. Kenya, which means God s resting place, has been an independent nation since Eighty-two percent of the 46 million Kenyans are Christian and eleven percent is Muslim. Kenya is a lower middle income country with a GDP per capita of $3300. Agriculture, including coffee, tea, corn, and sugarcane, provides at least partial income for 80% of the country s population. Though Kenya has the largest economy in East Africa, over 43% of the people live in poverty and 40% are classified as unemployed. Children typically stay in school eleven years, and 78% of the adults are literate. Kenya is currently sheltering over half a million refugees, mainly from Somalia in the north, but also from Uganda in the west. Acts 2 Collective Update Jonathan s House for Orphans Central African Republic It seems that things in CAR are always changing. Fortunately, recent changes are for the better. The bitter fighting has ended and a President was elected in February. That was an Good News from First Presbyterian Church, May 31, 2016, page 3

important part of the process towards rebuilding a country that has been torn apart by terrible violence and hatred. The Christian School will soon finish the school year with 297 students in grades 1 6. We ve added teachers and additional class hours to reduce the class sizes. Continued improvement in educational achievement will be a big part of our ongoing plans. We recently accepted two young orphan children from a village in the forest about 15 miles from the orphanage. These children were severely malnourished and neither child was able to stand up or walk. The two year old boy April 2016 MaMa was 15.5 lbs., and his female cousin was 16.5 lbs. at age three. Thanks to years of education and fundraising at our own church from Barbara Hawkins and the Presbyterian Women, we put the children on a PlumpyNut diet in as soon as we received them into our care. The results were tremendous. They are now on a normal diet and they are getting a bit fat! Eating Plumpnut They are getting stronger, but they ll still need some time before they can walk or stand. As you know, the Lord works in ways that are different than we might expect. After the rescue of the two children from the forest village, we continued a relationship with the village elders and discovered that they desired to know the Lord. We were able to show The Jesus Film in the village, and 350 people attended a single showing. Then they expressed their desire for a church home. This is a village that had started when the people in a much larger town evacuated to the forest for many months due to a rebel takeover of the town. After many months of rebel occupation, the forest area became a permanent village, but it was a village without a church. In May, we have completed evangelism training for 58 people from a Baptist church near the orphanage that will soon travel to the village to share the Good News with every resident of the village. Church services at a new church in the village will begin in June. According to our orphanage director, the evangelism training was a great blessing to many believers, and the blessing will soon be spread to many more new believers in the next few weeks. I never could have imagined that the Lord would do all of this through the rescue of two young orphans. As we have discovered in other towns, the work of orphan rescue gives us a powerful example of the love of Jesus to support the Good News that we are always ready to deliver. I believe that the same thing works powerfully in the here at home. 1) Demonstrate the love of our Savior in our daily lives. 2) Always be ready to deliver the Good News to those who have ears to hear. I ll be at the orphanage in early July with a team of ten believers. We ve got a lot to do and a lot of great children to love. One specific need is good basketballs for the Christian Basketball outreach program. If you d like to supply a basketball, you can call or visit The Sports Page in the Marshalltown Mall and ask for the Central African Republic basketball gift special. They are helping to provide us with basketballs designed for outdoor use in a wet climate at a very special price. Donated basketballs can be left at The Sports Page or brought to the church. A photo of our current basketball situation is shown. I d like to conclude with a giant THANK YOU to Dave Beckmann. When this work began in 2011 in CAR, the work of orphan rescue in the middle of Africa was overwhelming and the mission seemed nearly impossible. Fortunately, Dave believed it could be done. He has been a consistent encourager to me and a supporter of the orphanage and the Christian School in CAR, and I am extremely grateful. His willingness to let me share the news of the orphanage during his Sunday school classes was a great blessing. Dave s support has affected hundreds of children in CAR in ways that he ll never know. I think the same thing is true for thousands of lives that Dave has touched for the Good News from First Presbyterian Church, May 31, 2016, page 4

Lord during his travels and influence around the world. Thank you, Dave. Each night at VBS, the children will put their God sightings on a brick and the bricks will be made into a pyramid as the week progresses. How have you seen God today? Vacation Bible School VBS is just around the corner! Egypt: Joseph s Journey from Prison to Palace runs from June Help is needed in the kitchen. If you can help, even just one or two nights, please contact the church office. Be sure to let Nancy know when you can help so we don t have too many helpers one day and not enough another. Remember, you do not need to commit to the whole week! Thank you to all who have donated or lent items for Vacation Bible School. Please bring your items to the church office by Sunday June 19, or make arrangements with Michelle. There are still some items we need, such as ribbon (scraps, too!), straw, plastic wading pool, VBS music CDs ($6.50 ea.), reward coupons (DQ or like), and costume pieces. Please check out the brick donation pillar in the Narthex to see if you have something we can use as some new items have been added. All borrowed items will be returned following VBS Sunday, July 3. PWC Thrift-Bake-Craft Sale The Presbyterian Women are once again planning their annual spring Thrift/Bake sale. Your generous donations in previous years have made these sales a successful fundraiser year after year. The profits allow support of various projects in the church and outside the church with missions. In addition to donations of used items, we will be setting up a table with crafts for sale that are new and handmade. Please consider donating an item that you have made for this table. These items will be priced comparative to prices at arts and craft sales. If your craft item does not sell, it will be returned to you. The dates for dropping off your donations to the Gathering Place are: Monday, June 6, to Wednesday, June 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sign-up sheets are posted in the narthex to volunteer to help set-up or work at the sale. If you are interested, and want to learn more, contact Jackie Patterson, , or Edith Podhajsky, LUKE'S MINISTRY The Zika Virus Zika Virus Disease is caused by the Aedes mosquito which has originated in Africa, the South American countries, Asia and the Pacific. It was first identified in Rhesus monkeys in 1947 and subsequently identified in humans in 1952 in Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania. These mosquitoes usually bite during the early morning and late afternoon hours. This virus has been found in the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Common Wealth of Puerto Rico and American Samoa. There have been cases found in Florida and other states, also. With the recent outbreaks, the number of Zika cases among travelers visiting or returning to the U.S. will likely increase. Recently in Brazil, local health authorities have observed an increase in Gillian-Barrè Syndrome and an increasing body of evidence of a link to babies being born with microcephaly. Good News from First Presbyterian Church, May 31, 2016, page 6

Transmission has been thought to be by direct mosquito bite, but health authorities are finding the possibility of transmission through blood transfusion and sexually. The public, especially women who are pregnant or planning to get pregnant, have been cautioned not to travel to countries like Brazil or others that are having incidences of the Zika virus. Symptoms usually last 2-7 days and are usually mild and require no specific treatment. The symptoms are: (1) Mild fever (2) Skin rashes (3) Malaise (4) Headache (5) Joint and muscle pain (6) Conjunctivitis (red eyes) See a physician, if necessary. There is no vaccine for this virus at this time. Treatment: (1) Rest (2) Drink large amounts of fluids Prevention: (1) Do not travel to areas with Zika virus, especially if pregnant (2) Have no standing water in pots or stagnant areas where mosquitoes would gather (3) Wear protective clothes, i.e. long sleeve shirts, full-length trousers, etc. when working or playing where mosquitoes might be (4) Wear mosquito repellent (DEET) when in the yard working or playing (5) Use mosquito nets around sleeping areas if needed, e.g. camping out, activities in early evening Zika virus diagnosis can only be confirmed by laboratory testing for the presence of Zika virus RNA in the blood, or other body fluids such as saliva, urine or semen. We want you to know that we were deeply touched by the meaningful memorial service which was held in the church for Bob Scott. The delicious lunch with the homemade food was certainly appreciated, and the many kind words of sympathy will long be remembered. ---Joyce Scott and Family ---our faithful workers at the House of Compassion during the month of May: Mike Gerbo, Joe Holubar, Ed Jackson, Ken & Fran Smith, Yasuyo Smith, Carolyn Wilkinson, Michelle Wilkinson and the Awesome Presbys and Barb Wollam. ---Everyone who was involved in making Dave Beckmann's retirement reception a success. ---Children s Church helpers in May: Barb Hawkins, Barb McBride, Natalia Peng and Carter Strand. ---Our preschool helpers in May: Matt Broshar, Lauren Mosher and Leah Mosher. A pilgrimage affords the opportunity to put your feet where your heart wants to be: in the dwelling place or land of God. Jesus walked these rocky paths and ancient steps. By touching the land we hope that God will touch our hearts, open our eyes and invigorate our faith. On Monday, I leave for a pilgrimage to Israel. Our group consists of twenty-four pastors from the North Central Iowa Presbytery along with our Pastor to the Presbytery Rev. David Feltman, Dr. Darrel Gruder professor at Princeton Theological Seminary and two guides from Macedonia Ministries that makes this trip possible. We land in Tel Aviv to go see Caesarea by the Sea on the way to Galilee, and then spend five days in the Galilee area. The next six days we will be based in Jerusalem and see the sites of the Old City, Jericho and the Dead Sea. I invite you to go along with me in prayer and devotion. Please take one of the devotionals and follow along with some of the places I will see. You may also follow along with the daily Facebook devotions and Evening Prayers by liking the Facebook page of the First Presbyterian Church of Marshalltown. Please keep our Macedonia Ministry Group in your prayers, asking God to protect, renew and refresh our faith and dedication to the ministry. In every pilgrimage there is a going and a return. It is part of the journey. A pilgrimage is useless unless there is a return: a bringing back of something new or renewed into what was and has been. See you again soon Pastor Rich Good News from First Presbyterian Church, May 31, 2016, page 7

The Adventures of Flat Jesus Flat Jesus? What s that? Flat Jesus is a 2D representation of Jesus and a way to keep our church family connected throughout the busy summer months. Perhaps you re familiar with the Flat Stanley children s books by Jeff Brown. This is similar. Cut out Flat Jesus (or make your own larger one with your family), color him, and remember that Jesus is with you always (Matthew 28:20). Take a picture of Jesus with you in the places you go this summer - the lake, at camp, on vacation, in the field, volunteering, on your mission trip and when you meet new friends. Then the picture to Michelle (michelle.firstpres@gmail.org) or Nancy at the church office (presmtwn@mchsi.com). We will share them on the church s Facebook page and on the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall. Let s see where we can go with Jesus this summer!
