1 The St. James Messenger 204 Lee Street Leesburg, FL Our vision for St. James Parish is to be a Loving Family, embracing all peoples, expressing the love of Jesus Christ and carrying out His Ministry in our Community of Faith and the Community in which we live. THE ST. JAMES MESSENGER NOVEMBER AT ST. JAMES This year s Bazaar takes place on Wednesday, November 8th, from 10:00 a.m to 3 p.m. (see inside for the list of booths and items). Lunch is available from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. After the Bazaar, the Wine and hors d oerve s Party begins at 6:00 p.m. in the parish hall, followed by the Grand Auction at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for Wine and hors d oerves are on sale for $5 each. The Bazaar is the largest single fundraiser for the ECW. The majority of funds raised go to support outreach ministries in the local community and the wider church. Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven Matthew 5:17 Our Commitment Sunday will take place on November 12th. On this day we will invite you to make your stewardship pledge, and encourage you to visit our Ministry Fair in the parish hall. The Ministry Fair will take place after both the 8:00 and 10:00 services, and will include light refreshments. The theme of this year s program is, Let your light shine. We encourage you to let Christ s light shine through you in the gifts of stewardship that you have to offer. In the weeks prior to Commitment Sunday some of our members are sharing some wonderful testimonies about ways they have seen God s light shine in their lives. NOVEMBER 2017

Thank you for your help! INTERGENERATIONAL SUNDAY SCHOOL MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE! Every Sunday at 9:10 in the Parish Hall We continue our Sunday School program Make a Joyful Noise: Singing the Hymns and Learning their Message. Many of us know how easy it is to sing through the hymns on Sunday mornings without actually remembering what we ve sung. We believe that if we study these hymns more closely, along with the biblical passages that inspired them, we can both deepen our worship and strengthen our discipleship. The hymns we will study in November are: I Sing a Song of the Saints of God (#293), We Gather Together (#433), Lift High the Cross (#473) MONTHLY YOUTH EVENT NOVEMBER 5:30 P.M. We had a wonderful Chopped Challenge event in October, with nearly 50 people in attendance. For November we will celebrate Thanksgiving with a Fall Fest and a series of Minute to Win It games. Be sure to join us. We ll meet in the Parish Hall on Sunday, November 12th, at 5:30 p.m.. Come and join us! We also invite our young people to come out on Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. for dinner and Bible Study on the Lectionary. The fun activities will focus on the Old Testament lessons for the following Sunday. Please join us for a Men and Boys Steak Dinner hosted by the Men s Club, to be held at the Knowles Ranch (Buggs Spring Rd, Okahumpka) on Sunday, November 19th at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $15.00 each. Boys under 12 FREE. MEN S PRAYER BREAKFAST The men of St. James meet for breakfast and a time of prayer on the first Friday of each month, from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. Our next meeting will take place on Friday, November 3rd in the Parish Hall.
4 ST. JAMES ECW NEWS Monthly Meeting November 14, 2017 The next monthly meeting of the St. James Episcopal Church Women will be held on Tuesday, November 14th at 10:00AM in the Parish Hall. Our guest speaker will be Cheryl Rumbley of Hospice. Chapter Meetings November 21, 2017 The next monthly chapter meetings take place on Tuesday, November 21st. Three chapters will meet at 10:00 a.m.: St. Ann s (Hosted by Gail Robinson at 5403 Tangelo St. Leesburg, in the Plantation); and St. Mary s (hosted by Thelma Gannon, 4th Flour Lounge, Lake Port Square West). The St. Cecilia s chapter meets at 7:00 p.m. and will be hosted by Patti Wolf and Margaret Bolton (2922 Alta St., Leesburg). If you would like to attend, please contact any of the chapter hostesses, or ECW president Rita Clements THURSDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY Thursday Evening Bible Study has concluded on the Book of Isaiah. The group will take a break for the month of November, and will resume on December 7th with a new study on Jeff s book, The Lord is My...What? Stay tuned for more details! November is a big month for the Daughters of the King. November 7 is our tenth anniversary. The Charter members were Jean Baynes, Carolyn Lyon, Dorothy Smith, and Dorothy Vedder. Sadly we have lost two of these members, but gladly our membership is staying strong. On Sunday, November 26, we will admit two more members, Meg Bremer and Elaine Samson. We meet the first Wednesday of the month in the Parish Hall at 3 PM. Currently we are studying A Layman Looks at the Lord s Prayer by Phillip Keller, focusing on chapter 3 this month. The meeting is Nov. 1, and we welcome visitors. MUSIC MUSINGS November 2017 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. Colossians 2:6-7 Thanksgiving has become our family s favorite of all the holidays. As lifelong church musicians, my husband and I early on tried to find ways to set Thanksgiving apart, using it as a way to cherish time with our family before the craziness of the Advent and Christmas seasons took full control over our personal and professional lives. It has evolved over time to become what we lovingly call Thanksmas. We now gather at Thanksgiving to celebrate both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Before our Christmas festivities begin (on Friday), we go all in for a Thanksgiving celebration full of gratitude for not only the food on the table, but also for the relationships represented there as we bow our heads in prayer. Approaching this season of thankfulness, perhaps we should all be reminded that the source of all good gifts is God, the One Who is both the Author and Finisher of our faith. Then we can truly begin to count our blessings, those both large and small, and in the process look for ways to bless those around us. Here are some ways I believe we will be blessed in worship this month at St. James, and I am grateful for all who offer their time and talents to make this happen: St. James Choir The choir will be leading in worship each and every Sunday, and rehearses on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. New members are always welcome! Jubilate Our growing Children s/youth Choir is deep into rehearsals for their Christmas program, but will also sing twice for worship in November, the 5 th and the 19 th. It is such a joy to see the wonderful work Beth is doing with our young people. Instrumental Ensemble We are having so much fun preparing music for worship, and look forward to playing This Little Light of Mine on November 5 th. This lively piece is perfect for the St. James stewardship season as we are being challenged to let our lights shine as witnesses to the goodness of God. So let your light shine, y all, and be blessed this Thanksgiving! Yours in Christ, Deb Carraway, Director of Music
