2 Scripture: Romans 6:1-1 4 THE LIFE THAT WINS ~ /,,,,. Q 7 a.li-.::---- Intro: PERSUADED THAT HER ONLY SOLUTION WAS SUICIDE, A YOUNG ENGLISH STENOGRAPHER EDGED HER WAY OUT ON A LEDGE OVER 200 FEET IN THE AIR. CANNON THEODORE MILFORD, A MINISTER, WAS ABLE TO GET WITHIN TALKING DISTANCE OF HER. FOR ONE HOUR HE PLEAD WITH ALL OF HIS PERSUASIVE POWERS, TRYING TO GET THE YOUNG GIRL TO RETREAT FROM THE LEDGE--BUT, AT LAST, THE YOUNG GIRL JUMPED! I DO NOT DOUBT THAT THEODORE MILFORD DID HIS BEST, PERHAPS BETTER THAN MOST OF US COULD DO. YET, A H AUNTING QUESTION KEEPS RETURNING TO MY MIND. AND I ASK IT OF YOU. "WHAT IF YOU HAD BEEN TALKING TO THAT GIRL ON THE LEDGE? WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE SAID TO HER, OVER 200 FEET IN TH E AIR? II COULD YOU HAVE LOOKED WITHIN YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE AND SAID, "THIS IS THE LIFE THAT WINS - THIS IS THE KIND OF LIFE THAT FINDS VICTORY?" THAT YOU HAVE AN ANSWER IS MOST IMPORTANT. FOR SOMEDAY YOU MAY BE THE ONE IN THE SECRETARY': PLACE--PERHAPS NOT ON A LEDGE OF STONE--BUT ON THE LEDGE OF A MORAL, SPIRITUAL OR EMOTIONAL BREAKDOWN. AND IN THAT HOUR YOUR ONLY SALVATIO WILL BE THE KNOWLED9iE THAT YOU ARE LIVING 1 'rhe LIFE THAT WINS :,,. )_, "" :... l t. 1,,,. 1 The Life That Wins: I. BEGINS BY FACING A PROBING QUESTION - -VS 1 f o<c.:j:: u,,- e-vt "?-,./_.;..c;(_<'~,.;,. -/It, /~ r/f~ S:.J.' - ls. This i s a question you must squarely face: "Are you going t o continue in sin or are you going to make a clean break with sin? "7 What are you going t~?,o _~b.out it~ 9 ;11y _w_he!1_ yo~ re c ~u:age~_us enough
3 to face this que::::tion hone stly and to answer it candidly will you ever attain "the life that wins!" Yours will be a life of defeat and dismay until you come t o this point of integrity in your Christian life. 1. Which Unmasks the Sincerity of YourReligion --vs. la - -Exegesis: Paul asks the Christians at Rome if they are in dead earnest about their faith o He wants to know what their decision is for he wants to know the sincerity of their religion. --Apply: You have played "hide-and-seek" long enough with your religion. Place all pretense aside and ask, "Am I or am I not sincere about the matter of Christian living?" "Do I really want to do anything about it?" "Or am I content to sit upon the rock of salvation and dangle my feet in the wa tep of sin? " 2. Which Reveals Your Concept of God's Grace --vs. la & b --Exegesis: This question is occasioned by what Paul had just previously said in Roman.s 5:20b "But where sin " Paul is saying, "No Matter how much sin there might be committed, there is always an unlimited resource of grace to cover the sm.. ~ A wrong concept o f grace concludes, "Let us continue to sin in order that God's grace ~,,, may have opportunity to continue to abound. (1) That may be that of "ch~ap gra c e " --ILLUS: "So what? I know I am not perfect. Who Is? After all God will pick up the tab. " i.e. Like a delinquent wealthy teenager who knows ahead that Dad will pay the fines, pressure those who enforce the law, and in general "take care of things," no matter what he does. (2) That.may i mpart false secu_rity --ILLUS: "We are saved by grace through faith and that not of ourselves!" "It's all of God and nothing is required of me--i can
4 live as I please--god's grace is s ifficient!" - -Apply: The reason there are so many "mean Baptists" is that so many have a wrong concept of God's Grace. They have no intention of straightening up their lives and a ltering their pattern. GR,"tC RfQ1111U'i- 'f?el'f/vfa'1<e 3 II. REQUIRES AN UNDERSTANDING OF) THE MECHANICS OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE --vss 2-10 I --Exegesis: One must understand what a Christian life s.,, how it came about a nd how it rate s before he c a n live it. --ILLUS: Stanley Collins dn T ULSA, 1%;-~ and 98 Olds at turnpike gate. All the mechanisms were there, but he had no understanding of them and thus failed to benefit from them. --Apply: The r eason so many Christians are not getting consistent victory ov., in s f ot tha..t they do not <> p,vr,. G -r r; v1}'.a_... ':I:- ~ to live the 1fe that w ins. They just do not have an adequate understanding of the mechanics of the Christia n life. --It ~&_Life: 1. Which Has Experienced a Separation - -vss. 2,'fe.nd - Lt.S,.,,_ --Exegesis: "Dead to sin1 11 De a t h is not extinction --but s eparation. We have not experienced,"extinction " in relation to sin but we have experienced "separation. " Physical death is separ~rion of soul and body. Here it refers to separation of the believer from t he power of our s inful nature. (1) From sin I s domination \IV ~_\'V\. - ~ 2 Paul asserts that a Christian ' s continuance in ha bitua l sin is an impossibility it
5 on ground that the nature which before salvation made us sin habitually, has had its power broken. We have been separated from sin 1 s domination and to UvP. llnder it again is a mechanical impossibilief. (2) ~ the soul 1 s emancipation --vss. 6-7 (esp. 6b & 7) --Exegesis: = that which is antiquated, beloi ina to a ~ orld f has been - to some CR ~ Wl. - ~ f:s, if. forme civ11iza 10n -Qyel:l 11 = "to render idle or inoperative, to put out of commission." =ve::~" = from the verb whose stem is the same as the noun "bond slave" --"habitual slavery to something." --Apply: Thus the Christian life is a life that God has emancipated from slavery to sin. You re free-.-so live like a free man! You have the right to live the life that wins!~ S-L..u-c..., 2. Of Identification (With Christ) Re"f..vc-,..n<I/ c;,,.,...; --vs. S (1) In His death --vs. Sa "likeness" speaks of our identification with Christ. --E~e,gesis: _ :t is not the cortditional particle of an unfulfilled condition. It is a fulfillea condition, meaning, '!in v;iew of the fact have been planted speaks of an intimate 11 union and personal identification. Verb is nerfect tense-an action completed in time past and having present results. Although we hear a great deal about the possibility of the body's rejecting the new heart, there is no possibility of our old body of sin rejecting this "new heart" --for the "new heart" rejects the old body ("man") (see 6a) a :L,4- --ILLUS: ~ heart pa.µ.pg!l~ho received a transplant from an ekial-rom"a donor.
