2 Scripture: Luke 10:25-37 ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS IN MISSIONS Intro: H OF E SAMARITAN IS ONE OF THE MOST WELL KNOWN STORIES, TOLD BY OUR SAVIOUR. THIS I UE EC U J HAS SO MANY IMPLICATIONS ABOUT SO MANY GREAT TRUTHS. AMONG THE MANY LESSONS TtJAT IT TEACHES US ARE THOSE ON THE PROPER INTER-. PRETATION OF THE BIBLE, THE PROPER RELATION OF MAN WITH HIS FELLOW MAN, AND THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF CHRISTIANITY TO EVERY DAY LIFE. BUT THE PARTICULAR LESSON IN WHICH WE ARE INTERESTED TODAY IS ITS EMPHASIS ON MISSIONS. WITHIN THIS PARABLE ARE FOUND THREE WJRDS THAT REVEAL THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS IN MISSIONS. APART FROM THESE ELEMENTS, MISSIONS CAN NOT BE CARRIED ON IN ITS NEW TESTAMENT SENSE. I. COMPASSION ",, --vss. 30-~ CQ.tl~AS510.,V l. But he does receive through this pathetic practice a fear which is terrible beyond our imagination. You see something of this _ fear when you walk as I did on~ day down a path through the forest. As I ~ooked up into a tree I became almost petrified at the sight of a man's body swinging at the end of a rope which had been made from the bark of a tree. The people from this man's village expl ained this tragedy as the result of witchcraft. Just before we left for this present furlough, three huts were burned to the ground in our immediate neighborhood. In the two which caused death, it was generally accepted that witchcraft was responsible. Many threats which are made by the witchdoctor can be carried out by the witchdoctor or by someone he hires. I. 3 (2) Clark Scanlon, returned to his field in Guatemala this past summer. Just before he returned a lady in a church where he was speaking said, "Young man, why are you going to bury your life in Guatemala." Clark replied, "I am not- going to bury my life, but to plant it." Where would God lead you to plant your life? fl Just before Julius Hickerson returned to Colombia where he was shortly to lay down his life, he spoke his last message in America at his home church in Minden, Louisiana. His closing words that day echo the testimony of a great host of missionaries. "Don't ask me why I am going--ask yourself why you are not." /0,,/VI /t'/ "1s A k I - -;y-al'a!v II. 2. ILLUS: I went to the city of Hiroshima. As all of you know, the city of Hiroshima was bombed by the atom bomb. Two hundredthousand people were killed. In that city I met a man by the name of George Korokawa. This young man's family--father, mother, sister--were all killed. He himself was criticall~ i njured. He had scars on his face; all of his hair was taken off. This young man said that the only thing that kept him alive was his bitter hatred for Americans. He stayed alive because he wanted to kill as many Americans as he could when he got well. This young man, after getting well, walked down the street of Hiroshima one day late in the evening. He heard a few people singing in

Here is used to underscore the "helpfulness of a neighbor" & so used in Prov. 27:lOb "Better is a neighbor that is near than a BROTHER far off." ::,/ 2. "MERCY" - ( EA e S ) "The outward manifestation of pity. It assumes need on the part of him who receives it, and resources adequate to meet the need on the part of him who shows it. / 3. "00" - ( Tro 1 e1 ) "To adopt a way of expressing yourself thru thoughts, feelings & actions." i.e. Peter's proposal to express his feelings in Matt. 17:4 " Lord it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make ( ) here three tabernacles; one for thee, & one for Moses, & one for Elias."
8 a building, and they sounded so happy, and he was so sad. He walked into the building and sat in the back and heard Rev. Kimora preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. In the months to follow George Korokawa accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour. When I went there, this young man said, "I'll go with you, Tom, wherever you want to go." And we went into the rural areas of Hiroshima. -,
9 - 3 - "For some there is an open road; For some there is a gate; Some are meant to run ahead; Some are asked to wait. While some are called to go afar; The ways of the world to mend, Some have been commissioned To stay at home and send." Song: "We've a Story to Tell to the Nations" \
