THE WORLD'S GREATEST LESSON PRAYER Scripture: Luke H:1..:13 -,& Matt. 6:5-15 Intro: THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF VOLUMES OF BOOKS ON PRAYER WRITTEN BY GODLY AND RIGHTEOUS MEN--BUT THI WORLD'S GREATEST LESSON ON PRAYER IS NOT TO BE FOUND IN THEM. THE LEARNED AND CONSECRATED PROFESSORS OF OUR SEMINARIES BRING MANY GREAT LECTURES ON PRAYER--BUT THE WORLD'S GREATEST LESSON ON PRAYER IS NOT TO BE FOUND IN THEM. YOU HAVE HEARD MANY OLD SAINTS OF THE CROSS PRAY A SOUL-STIRRING PRAYER, BUT STILL THE WORLD'S GREAT EST LESSON ON PRAYER IS NOT TO BE GAINED FROM THEM. YOU CAN READ THE SINCERE PRAYERS OF THE GREAT DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH--BUT EVEN WITHIN THEM YOU WILL NOT FIND THE WORLD'S GREATEST LESSON ON PRAYER. THE WORLD'S GREATEST LESSON ON PRAYER COMES FROM THE WORLD'S GREATEST TEACHER--JE8US CHRIST. HIS TEACHING HOLDS FOR US THE BLUE-PRINTS OF PRAYER. JESUS SETS THE STATE FOR HOW A CHRISTIAN OUGHT TO PRAY BY FIRST STATING HOW A CHRISTIAN OUGHT NOT TO PRAY. I. For self aggrandizement - Matt 6:5-6 (1) "Reward" --What is the hyprocrite's "reward?" Praise from some of his fellow-men with the consciousness that he does not deserve it, a perpetual dread lest they find him out, and frequent fears of that coming time when the secrets of all hearts shall be revealed. (2) "Hyprocrisy" --is a sort of homage that vice pays to virtue. " Origin--"The hyprocrites wearing the mask of goodness, are actors in their own theatre, the synagogues -and corners of the streets." (3) vs, 6, ;. C~rys ;:,_.:._us cmie ~ even whe ri their perso 1 n is coriceale9-, ma:ke: thems'elves manifest to a~r 1?Y _their voi'ce~ 1'

( 4) vs One advantage of praying alone is that we need feel no hesitation in speaking aloud, which greatly aids_ ii'!,-restraining wandering. thoughts." (5) vs. 6 "Shall I not pray in church?" Yes! It is not the place that hurts, but the manner and the aim. For many in fact, when praying in secret, are doing so to please men. 2. With a multitude of meaningless words--matt 5 :7 (I) "Vain Repetitions 11 --(Greek) used to express stuttering, the indistinct speech of little children, or any confused babble. (2) vs. 7 like I Kings 18:26 "And they called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, "O Baal, hear us " Elijah mocked them, then prayed simple prayer 1-1/2 verses long "Then the fire of the Lord fell. 11 (3) A Roman comic writer makes one person tell another not to stun the gods with thanksgiving, "unless you judge them to have no more sense than yourself, so as to think they do not understand anything unless it has been said a hundred times." (4) Buddhist & prayer wheel - turned by hand or wind or water. Each revolution is a prayer and add: to their merit. (5) Romanist--count repetitions by slipping the beads of the rosary thru hands. (6) Cyprian: "God hears not the voice but the heart." (7) "Much speaking" --Cryil: "Christ commands us to pray briefly, because he knows our minds are easily led off into wandering thoughts, especially in time of prayer." I. AN ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF GOD'S FATHERHOOD --"Our Father which are in heaven" --Illus: "Boston" prayer I. Which sets, the stage for true prayer (.I) Since it pre.s_ent.s God as "Fath~r" (2). Since,it_presents _you _q_s his child_ 2. Which turns your attentioq. to.only bim. 3. Which gives you direct access to God (I) Since Christ mentioned nothing of a human mediato1 (2) Since Christ mentioned nothing of a dead saint

... - I, (3) Since you are a "Child of God." --ILLUS: GOING INTO PRESIDENTS PRESENCE-- II. REVERENCE FOR GOD'S NAME --Hallowed be thy name" ---Illus: Adoration --i.e. wife 1. Which shows proper respect (1) For the holiness of God (2) For the blessings of God 2. Which is a form of worship (1) Since the soul acknowledges, the worth of God (2) Since the soul acknowledges the worthlessness of self 3. Which deepens faith in God, (1) Since no faith can be had without, respect III. A DESIRE FOR GOD' s KINGDOM TO COME --',Thy Kingdom come" 1. Which involves salvation for the lost (1) Since saved people make up the kingdom (2) Since the last lost one must be won 2. Which involves service for the Christian (1) Since this is the only wa.y to win the lost (2) Since this is the only way to be ready for the kingdom to come --ILLUS: Some people's religion like fire extin. 3. Which involves the gospel for the heathen (1) Since they must be reached (2) Since they may be the last ones -,-Illus: Are you really ready for God's Kingdom to come? IV. SUBMISSION TO GOD'S WILL --"Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven" --Exegsis: When God's reign is fully come then his will shall be done in earth as it is heaven. --Illus: In heaven everything takes place as God wishes. 1. Since this is a vital neces, sity to tni.e prayer --Illus.: I~~US, iµ the garden 2 In your own personal~ life (1) Its very existence

(2) Its attainments (3) Its place of residence (4) Its Christian service (5) Its possessions ( 6) Its conduct 3. In the world --"in earth" Chrys. "He hath enjoined each of us who pray, to take upon himself the care of the whole world." V. A REQUEST FOR DAILY NEEDS --"Give us this day our daily bread" (Matt 6:11) --Exegesis: Here begins the second division of the prayer --that which contains petitions for ourselves In which God is concerned --"Bread" naturally represents food in general--all that is necessary to support life. (1) Since he cared for the Israelites (2) Since Christ' s miracles concentrated on men's physical needs. 2. In which is seen no selfishness (1) Since they are NEEDS - -"Give us this day" -- we don't ask for a year's supply in advance, just for "this day's" needs- tomorrow is in the hands of God! (2) Since our Father has promised to care for you --Luke 12: (READ) (3) Since you are doing your part --II Thess. 3:10 " This we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. " VI. A PLEA FOR DIVINE FORGIVENESS --Matt 6:12 "And forgive us for our debts, as we forgive our debtors." (Luke) "for we forgive everyone that is indebted to us " - Exegesis: Life sustained by daily bread is not enough, we need also the forgiveness of sin. 1. Which has as its basis your forgiveness --"forgive" --"have forgiven" Already before we seek forgiveness. Not a mere momentary effort at forgiveness but a habitual forgiveness as shown by "everyone "

(1) Since God cannot forgive the unforgiving --vss Exegesis: The fact that this ALONE of all the topics of the prayer is taken up a second time & amplified by stating it both postively and negatively certainly stresses the importance of forgiving if we wish to be forgiven! --ILLUS: By not practicing forgiveness men incur odium or loss of character. --"Forgive " not merely "to bear no malice" or "to abstain from revenge, leaving that to God," for in that sense we ought to "forgive" every wrongdoer, even the impenitent. The Scripture use of the word indicates that in the fullest sense of the term "forgive" it is not our duty nor even proper to forgive one who has wronged us UNTIL he confesses the wrong with such sincerity and geniune change of feeling and purpose as to show him worthy of being restored to our confidence and regard. --Luke 17:3 "If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him." (2) Since an unforgiving heart is not in tune with God --Illus: Here is a man who has been bitterly wronged by another; he says to him, "I forgive you this, but I cannot forget it.' He enters his closet and prays: 'Father, forgive me, as I have forgiven him! Say to me in w ords that thou forgive st me, but do not forget my offences! Blot the not out of the book of thy remembrance! Do to me as I do to him! ' Oh, h ow often does this prayer, if offered sincerely, means a curse." Am. Com. 2. Which justifies you (1) Since thru it your sins are forgiven (2) Since thru it God forgets your sin 3. Whi ch is necessary for happiness ( guilt) VII. A PLEA FOR DELIVERANCE FROM EVIL --Matt 6:13 --"and" -- Because the forgiveness of past sins is not enough we need also preservation from future sin.

1. Into which men lead each other --Illus: Men lead each other into temptation by offering inducements to do wrong; but the thought here is of God's so ordering things in his providence as to bring us into trying circumstances, which would put our principles and characters to the test. This providential action does not compel us to do wrong, for such conditions become to us the occasion of sin only when our own evil desires are the impelling cause. (James 1:13-15) The same conditions properly met would but manifest and strengthen one's piety, as when God "did prove Abraham: (Gen. 28:1), or allowed Satan to test the fidelity and patience of Job. 2. With which God tempts no man --James 1:13 "Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted with evil neither tempteth he any man. " 3. From which man can emerge the Victor --James 1:2 "My brethren count it all joy when y fall into divers temptations." (1) With the help of God --I Cor. 10:13 "There hath no temptation taken you but such as i s common to ma n : but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that you are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." (2) With Christian character strengthened --James 1:3 "Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience." (3) With the promise of an eternal reward --James 1:12 "Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to t hem that love him. "
