St. Peter s Church enews Frampton Cotterell September 2017 Oh Dear what happened to August? I thought the summer was coming but the weather seemed to decide otherwise as soon as the children broke up from school. Oh well never mind at least everyone has had a rest from school for a bit. A reminder that we would love to hear from you with any views or opinions you would like to share with us and we are always happy to publicise local events if you have details of them and you think that our readers may be interested. Remember that you can unsubscribe to our enews by simply sending an saying STOP to the same address and I will remove you from our list. Also a note about distribution, please advise us if you do not receive the enews by about the 10 th of the month as you may have been missed in the group picking. This seems to be an error that can randomly occur and I cannot easily check. I look forward to receiving anything that you wish to contribute, so please send in any comments/letters, articles, pictures, or questions which we can use/research or answer for you. Things are best sent in Word document form if possible, with pictures attached if you wish. I will then try my best to include your item. Please send in an electronic copy to me at: 1
Dear Friends I can t believe as I write this article that we are almost three quarters of the way through the year, September is with us, schools go back after the long summer break, the Church returns to its normal weekly cycle of prayer, worship and the inevitable meetings and on top of this Autumn is just around the corner! September brings us Michaelmastide, really important for one of our Benefice Churches, St Michael s Winterbourne, as they celebrate their Patronal Festival. Michaelmas, a time for remembering St Michael the Arch Angel and all the other Angels, God messengers and our protectors, neatly tucked in just before Harvest. It was in the past a time for Ordinations and Licensing s. In some Diocese, it still is and here in Bristol it is a time when we licence our Lay Ministers to serve the Church in that distinct ministry. For us this Year we will be celebrating with Des Colchin at St Peter s as he takes on this role within our Benefice. I learnt at the end of term however that Michaelmas was also the time when Farm Labourers were hired for the coming year. They lined up with their families, were inspected by the Land Owner and if they were healthy enough were given an apple to signify that they had a job for a further year. The apple was the symbol of their contract and in their case very much a symbol of life and hope for the future. Our modern world is full of contracts, telephones, employment, houses, gas and electricity to name a few, the paperwork and s are endless. How much simpler to be given an apple. In Religion when we talk about contract we use the term Covenant, the bible is full of covenants especially between God and humanity, Noah, Abraham and Moses to name just three were caught up in this divine transaction. 2
Christians believe that we also have a Covenant with God. For through the Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus we are part of eternal covenant with God, that our sins are forgiven. We are restored to Gods love for all time and each of us has our personal ticket for the Heavenly Party! So, this Michaelmas take an apple from the bowl, think for a moment on all that has been done for you unconditionally by God, give thanks for those you love and for yourself and strive in your own way to live out the life God calls you to in the way you care for others, especially the vulnerable and the weak. For each of us in our own way are symbols through the cross of the Everlasting Covenant, which brings with it the Kingdom of God. Happy Michaelmas! Revd Malcolm Strange Rector of the Fromeside Benefice 3
Wednesday 6th Sept, 7pm at 'The Globe' Frampton Cotterell will see our 1st benefice Mens Group Meeting This evening is an opportunity for the men who have links with our Churches and their friends to come together. There will be a Buffet Supper at a cost of 7. There will be a talk given by Brian Organ a retired Police Officer and Elder in the Brethren Church. Who will be talking about how his Faith affected his role as a Police Officer. There will be list at the back of the Churches for people to sign up on during August and the cut off is Sunday 3rd Sept. There may well be a limit on places so it is important folks sign up quickly (although you will not need to pay until the night). We hope that many of you will come along for an enjoyable evening out at the pub and please feel free to bring a friend. I look forward to seeing you there. Malcolm 4
As you may have noticed the weather seemed to take a dive as August arrived. The expected summertime just faded away and strange things appeared here on my lawn. I thought that these things only happened during the autumn? Then everything else in the gardens has come early so maybe the season has changed without our knowing. But wait a moment what is that I can see let s have a closer look. Maybe it s just the little people having a bit of a joke on us all - I think they sometimes do when we take our holidays. Perhaps you have an odd tale you would like to share with us something that may have happened in Frampton or perhaps while you have been away. Do send in to us if you can we would love to hear from you! 5
The Annual Ride and Stride event is on Saturday, September 9 th What is it? It is like a pub crawl but with churches instead of pubs. There are a lot of pubs churches in Gloucestershire, many of which will be open and some will provide delicious refreshment. We are looking for people who will walk between churches or cycle to see even more churches. Did I mention horse-riding? Horse Riders visiting even more churches would add class! Churches in Gloucestershire The idea is to 1. Beg sponsorship for the number of churches visited or the time riding and striding, 2. Pass the money to the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust 3. Reclaim half of this. Why? The Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust raises money for the repair of Gloucestershire churches or for development (such as a loo). GHCT has been generous to us, St. Peter s, helping us to repair the tower roof and, more recently, the erection of the Quiet Room for children and small meetings. Why not? On most days, it is difficult to visit an open church to admire it, to feel the atmosphere, or to steal some of their ideas. The churches have been asked by GHCT to keep the church open on this day, preferably with refreshments. You may wish to feel the aura of sanctity, the majesty of ancient stones, or the significance of the church to the community. The building will have been the receptacle 6
of worship, of joy or grief in recent years, or for centuries. Or you may feel that the congregation is struggling to maintain the fabric of the building and may be drawn to the box for donations. Why us? We have ridden in the September sunshine and in sodden, sullen rain. In both, there is a feeling of elation, of purpose, of satisfaction and of transference of the love, work, and giving that emanates from the churches large or small. Because? You will be welcome, you will see wonderful churches, you will help to maintain the churches. Important when the congregation cannot manage at present, when the need of the parishioners is growing but without the implements to meet the need. AND, it will be fun! STOP PRESS The Ride and Stride County Organiser tells me that if you do not wish to ride or stride, you can use your car to visit the churches and, maybe, if you wish, a donation will ease into your mind. OR you could help to keep the church open, enter the record for the visitors, serve refreshments or bake a cake. Please join us John Alexander 7
As the Rt Revd Mike Hill prepares to retire as Bishop of Bristol on 30 September 2017, he has written a final letter to parishes in the Diocese of Bristol. The letter, which can be read below, sets out his commitment to resourcing new ministers, calling for churches to pray for, equip and release a new generation of workers into the harvest field and specifically those to lead our churches: The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest therefore to send out workers into the harvest field. Luke 10:2 As a convert to the Christian faith, my passion has been to see people come to faith in Jesus Christ. In parish ministry, I sought to lead churches where people could hear the Good News, deepen their faith and transform their communities. I have tried to encourage our churches to do the same in their tradition and their context. Our society is in desperate need of God. Like the crowds Jesus encountered, people are harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. As I retire, the Church of England is rediscovering its mission to the nation. The harvest is plentiful and we have hope for the future. But we must face our challenges if that harvest is to be reaped. The particular challenge I want to leave you with is to pray for, resource and release a new generation of workers into the harvest field and specifically those to lead our churches. A growing and hopeful Church needs ministers, lay and ordained, with a deep faith who can lead in a changing and diverse world. It needs a wide variety of people and gifts to lead in different ways. But it also needs more ministers: the workers are few and are getting fewer. As a Church, we have underinvested in praying for and seeking out this new generation. We have also underinvested in funding their training and ministry. 8
In this Diocese, our previous approach to Parish Share, the way we resource ministry, intensified this. As parishes did not receive clear and equitable direction on how much to give, many unintentionally deprioritised their responsibility to fund ministry. The gap between Parish Share and ministry costs widened to 1m. To redress the balance, all parishes are now being asked to give at new levels to provide the ministry we need, both now and into the future. How can you play your part? Pray Jesus tells us to ask God to send out workers. All vocation is the gracious call of God. We need to pray for Him to renew all vocations among the body of Christ. Encourage others Who do you see with the faith, character and gifts who God might be calling to ministry? Encourage them to use their gifts and explore their vocation. Respond yourself How are you responding to Jesus call to follow Him? How are you following Jesus in the spheres of your life, loving God and serving others? Is God calling you to ministry? Give Put simply, parishes need more financial resources and to give more of them to Parish Share to invest in the ministry we need an increase of 1m between 2015 and Every Christian can give sacrificially to their parish. Clergy and church leaders can teach about generous giving as part of discipleship. PCCs can review their approach to stewardship using Giving for Life, adopt a programme like Giving in Grace and maximise their income through effective Gift Aid processes and joining the Parish Giving Scheme. Finally, PCCs can respond to their Parish Share request in the light of the need, taking responsibility, being generous and having faith. The Diocese of Bristol has a hopeful future. It has been a privilege to serve this diocese. As I work out the next chapter of my vocation, I will be joining you in praying, encouraging others and giving so that the plentiful harvest might be reaped. Yours in Christ, Rt Revd Mike Hill Bishop of Bristol 9
If you have any small glass bottles with screw tops (eg. Small wine bottles, small sauce bottles, or other glass drinks bottles) Then would you please save them and bring them in to church or give them directly to Linda and Simon Broomsgrove as we would like to recycle them for various items to sell at the Christmas fair. Many thanks 10
