2 Dear Members and Friends of Westminster: Did you know that education occurs in every activity we do as a faith community? Everything we do worship, mission, classes and fellowship gatherings informs, and shapes us. Thus, the educational programs and classes described in this booklet make up one dimension, but a critical dimension, of a larger whole. Look at the image on the front cover. If any section or color were missing, it would not be as beautiful. What a wonderful metaphor for our life together! It can also be a metaphor for the individual. The power of metaphor is that it can have many different meanings. Look again at the front cover. I like to think of our educational ministry as the color green that is woven throughout our church community. If we participate in only one dimension of the church s life, we do not fully experience or enjoy the beauty of the whole. Enjoy exploring the following pages and arranging your time and priorities to include weekly worship, faithful mission, AND committed Christian education. As we come together in community, the Spirit makes of us a beautiful mosaic. In faith and friendship, Susan Moseley Church Educator 2

One of the most profound and universal symbols of Wholeness is the mandala or sacred circle. In fact, Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning circle. In the strict use of the mandala, there is a central point or focus within the symbol from which radiates a symmetrical design. This suggests there is a center within each one of us to which everything is related, by which everything is ordered, and which is itself a source of energy and power. Virtually every spiritual and religious system asserts the reality of such an inner center. As Christians, we speak of that center as the Christ within. It is a mosaic. A mosaic is a picture or design composed of small pieces of colored material such as glass or tile. The many pieces together make a beautiful whole. Thus, the mosaic gives artistic expression to our Christian affirmation that though we are many, we are all one in Christ. It is a Celtic knot. Celtic knots have two essential characteristics: All the interwoven strands are endless representing eternity. Also, the over-under patterning evokes themes of interconnectedness and unity, just as all the different strands of our lives are woven into one unified, interrelated design. What meaning do you discover when you reflect upon the image? 4 Nursery and Godly Time 4 Nursery Sundays, 8:45 a.m. 12:15 p.m. Care is provided for babies and toddlers in the nursery each Sunday. A paid supervisor and weekly volunteers provide loving care for the children in a safe environment. A special area is available for nursing mothers as well. Godly Time Sundays, 9:00 10:00 a.m. Families begin worship together in the sanctuary. After the Time with Our Children, children up through 5th grade may leave for their class or remain in worship. Godly Care: Ages 2, 3 and 4 Preschool Suite: Classroom A Children begin to develop their spiritual lives, and we teach them that they are precious children of God. They experience simple worship rituals and learn key stories in the Bible. Each story is told in a lively fashion using bright, colorful felt figures. Children respond through crafts, songs and prayers. Godly Play: Kindergarten Grade 1 Ruth Christie Room Children learn the language of God s people through sacred space, sacred stories, parables and liturgical actions. Much more than play, this experience is highly structured and intentional. Godly Kids Hebrew Scouts: Grades 2 and 3 Meets in Classroom B in the Preschool Suite and concludes in Classroom C for pickup after worship. Through imagination, children become Hebrew Scouts, experiencing the stories of the Israelite people. This year a new DVD will energize and inspire the children in addition to the Hebrew Scout tradition of traveling throughout the church building and re-enacting the stories. Pathfinders: Grades 4 and 5 Meets downstairs in Classroom 2 and concludes upstairs, in Classroom C, for pickup after worship. Pathfinders will explore the radical way of Jesus through the stories of Jesus teaching and healing in Palestine. Map making, role-playing, and videos will help provide a sense of life in ancient Palestine. Games and projects will help reinforce the learnings. Save the date! Vacation Bible School: July 22 26, 2013 Keeping Our Children Safe: Security Labels Our Nursery and Godly Time programs, as well as Sunday School for Preschoolers are using security labels as part of their check-in and checkout process. Labels are available in the nursery, Preschool Suite, and the sanctuary pew pockets. A parent or guardian will fill out one side of the peel-and-stick label during the announcements, stick it to their child s back before the Time with Our Children, and retain the stub to be presented when they pick up their child. For questions about this procedure, please contact Susan Moseley, Church Educator ( x103 or smoseley@wpc.org).

Book Study: Marcus Borg s Speaking Christian: Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning and Power And How They Can Be Restored Led by Greg Jones Sundays, September 23 October 21 Classroom 6 The Christian Church in North America is experiencing difficult times. Many distance themselves from the Church because they find its teachings disturbing. In his latest book, Speaking Christian, Marcus Borg seeks to redeem a faith that is often misunderstood and distorted as he reclaims Christian language in all its richness and wisdom. Borg argues that Christianity s important words, and the sacred texts and stories in which those words are embedded, have been narrowed by two causes: a literalization of language in the modern period and a modern framework for the faith that emphasizes the importance of correct beliefs so that a person can go to heaven rather than hell. Dr. Jones will lead a discussion on a portion of this book prior to Dr. Borg s appearance as Westminster s Distinguished Speaker from October Having your own copy of this book is helpful, but not a requirement. You can purchase Speaking Christian at church ($20). Westminster By Heart Led by Biblical storytellers Mary-beth Howard and Shelley Gnade Every Sunday this fall, beginning September 23 (except October 28, November 25, December 23, and December 30) The Sanctuary Westminster By Heart, a group of lay members committed to learning the scripture by heart and bringing it to our congregation throughout the year in our worship services, will meet throughout the year. Whether you see yourself as a teller or a listener, the process of learning scripture by heart can be a powerful process for understanding and connecting to the stories of our faith. Join any Sunday and explore your inner storyteller! (Check the weekly bulletin or online church calendar for specific class dates, locations, and changes.) For more information, contact Shelley Gnade ( ) or Mary-beth Howard ( ). Faith in Action Adult Education Series Shared leadership from congregation and community Part I - Introduction Changing Lives in Christ s Name - Westminster s Outreach to Those in Need Leaders: Sue Linderman and members of the Joint Mission Committee Sunday, September 23 Classroom 5 Throughout our 126(!) year history, Westminster has been a beacon of support to those in need. 7

8 Understanding ourselves to be the hands and feet of Christ in our world, we seek opportunities to share the abundant gifts that God has given us. Come and hear the update given to Session earlier this year by our mission committees. You will be amazed by the many ways in which Westminster is truly making a difference locally and globally! Family Promise Westminster s Partner in Sheltering Homeless Families Leaders: Carolyn Gordon, Executive Director; Marlys Kerr, WPC Sunday, September 30 Classroom 5 This will not be your typical informational session! During the session, you will learn about Family Promise s innovative model for ending homelessness, one family at a time; be inspired by graduate success stories and how their circumstances have been transformed; and hear about ways to get involved in the ministry so that YOU may be transformed as well! Who Are Wilmington s Homeless? There But For The Grace of God Leaders: Marc Marcus and Marcy Perkins, Friendship House; John Doyle, WPC Sunday, October 7 Classroom 5 As Friendship House prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary of ministry to the homeless in our community, the economic forces that contribute to homelessness are stronger than ever. Families and individuals are living one medical emergency, one car breakdown, one lost paycheck away from losing their homes. Come hear the stories of those who are homeless and the many ways in which Friendship House helps people to regain their independence. You will be surprised by what you learn and come away with renewed gratitude for God s blessings. I Have New Shoes to Meet My Tutor Leaders: Rob Prestowitz, Catherine Dolan, and James Russell from Urban Promise Sunday, October 14 Classroom 5 Whether children believe they can or they can t either way they are correct. Urban Promise is dedicated to helping kids see themselves as capable of achieving their potential. Working miracles in the lives of Wilmington children and youth is business as usual at Urban Promise. Be inspired by the success stories and moved to action by the opportunities that exist to transform a child s life and your own. Part III - Making a Difference in Our World Understanding Congo Series Facilitator: Anne Ledbetter Sundays, November 4, 11, and 18 Classroom 6 Presbyterians have had a strong presence in the Congo since the late 1800 s. Our own New Castle Presbytery is in partnership with Kananga Presbytery in the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo), where our sister church Kamulumba-Ditalala is located. Through this three-week class we will come to a better understanding of the difficult and desperate circumstances of our Congolese friends. First we will review the past four hundred years of political disintegration of Congo, which began with the European and Arab slave trade of the 16th century. We will also learn about the work of Presbyterian missionaries in Congo, from William Shepperd in the 19th century to the present. PC(USA) missionaries Christi and Jeff Boyd will be our guests on November 18 and bring us up to date on the current situation and how we may support our sisters and brothers in Congo as they seek peace and progress. 8

9 Beyond Theology DVDs and Discussions Three episodes from the PBS series Classroom 5 Evolving with the Bible Facilitator: Janet Steinwedel Sunday, October 21 Many of those concerned about the teaching of evolutionary theory in public schools see a conflict with the account of Creation presented in the Bible. Others contend that it is possible to accept the scientific validity of evolution while also retaining a connection to faith. Moving beyond this dispute, we see how biblical stories continue to influence our moral imagination. A Spirituality of Co-Creation Facilitator: Susan Moseley Sunday, November 11 The prevailing monotheistic religions have been dominated by a top-down approach based upon a paternalistic model. This model is being called into question by some who assert that human beings must step forward to accept greater responsibility for our actions while becoming more attuned to transpersonal creative energies. Spirituality and Religion Facilitator: Dave McBride Sunday, November 18 What does it mean when a person says: I m a spiritual person, but I m not particularly religious? What s the difference between religion and spirituality? A significant number of people refrain from identifying themselves with any particular religion, although they express a keen interest in nourishing their own spirituality. Sunday, October 28: At 10:TEN, Marcus Borg will lead an adult education class in Community Hall titled, Open Hearts and Thin Places. Understanding the Bible: A DVD Series by Dr. Kenneth Bailey Sundays, November 4 and 11 Classroom 3 How and in what way was the Bible inspired by God? In the first lecture, Dr. Bailey reflects on this important topic and then turns to the question of how the New Testament books were selected for the canon of the Church. The second lecture focuses on the seven sins of Biblical interpretation. Many mistakes have been made in the past and we need to know where Christians have gone astray in their methods and how those seven errors fail to unlock the secrets of God that the original authors intend the readers to understand. A case for historical interpretation is then made. Reflections and Discussion about New Insights from Marcus Borg Facilitator: Greg Jones Sunday, November 4 Classroom 5 The week after Marcus Borg s visit to WPC, there will be an opportunity to reflect on and discuss ideas presented in his lectures and sermon. New biblical and theological concepts can raise new questions about our faith, and it helps to talk about them out loud with others. 9

10 The Journey: Walking the Road to Bethlehem An Advent Series by Adam Hamilton Discussion Leader: Jill Getty Sundays, November 18, December 2, 9, 16, and 23 Classroom 3 In this five-session DVD series, Adam Hamilton offers a fascinating look at the birth of Jesus Christ as he travels on location from Nazareth to Bethlehem. It is said that as one listens to a Hopkins poem it is impossible to understand what he is saying you just have to let the words roll over you and feel your way into a deeper understanding. His love of nature and Christ are clear throughout his work. This class will help participants gain a deeper understanding of both Hopkins and his poetry. Talking to Kids about Sexuality Presenter: Yvonne Nass Sundays, December 2, 9, and 16 Classroom 6 The issue of children and sexuality is intimidating for many parents. Yet, Yvonne Nass is able to help parents discern when and how to talk to their children. In addition to her presentations, Yvonne welcomes all questions, responding with knowledge, compassion, and humor. Ms. Nass is a certified Parent Educator and Consultant with over 35 years of professional experience. The Exotic and Mystical Poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins Facilitator: Steve Steinwedel Sundays, December 2 and 9 Ruth Christie Room Jesuit priest and poet, Hopkins is regarded as one of the Victorian era s greatest poets. His unique and wonderful style says simple things in a strange way 10

11 Additional Adult Education Opportunities (Not on Sundays) The Spectrum of Vitality Presenter: Alan Fox, Ph.D., Philosophy Department, University of Delaware Thursday evenings, September 13, 20, and 27 7:00 9:00 p.m. Rodney Chapel Cost: $20 per session ($15 for CIL/WPC members) $40 for all three ($30 for CIL/WPC members) Many traditions, both religious and scientific, have models which describe the living organism as composed of a range or spectrum of coarser and finer bodies. In Hinduism, these bodies are described as kosa or sheaths, and this reflects a broader view of substance which ranges from the infinitely dense to the infinitely fine. With regard to embodiment, this means that we are operating on a number of different frequencies simultaneously, but are paying attention to only the slowest and densest of bodies. This is the problem of misidentification identifying with our physical bodies, when we are actually so much more than that. Yoga and other forms of so-called energy work involve learning to attend to, attune to, and ultimately manipulate higher frequencies in the embodiment. Alan Fox is a Professor of Asian and Comparative Philosophy and Religion in the Philosophy Department and Director of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program at the University of Delaware. He received the University of Delaware s Excellence in Teaching Award in 1995 and 2006, and the UD College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher Award in In 2006 he was named US Professor of the Year for the state of Delaware. Flying Solo Book Study and Pot Luck Supper Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life, by Richard Rohr Leader: The Rev. Tom Stout, retired Presbyterian pastor and current Moderator for New Castle Presbytery Sunday evenings, September 23, October 7, October 21, November 4 and November 18 6:00 8:30 p.m. First session at the home of Karen Beer In the first half of life, we are naturally and rightly preoccupied with establishing our identity climbing, achieving, and performing. But those concerns will not serve us as we grow older and begin to embark on a further journey, one that involves challenges, mistakes, loss of control, broader horizons, and necessary suffering that actually shocks us out of our prior comfort zone. Eventually, we need to see ourselves in a different and more life-giving way. Rohr takes us on a journey to give us an understanding of how the heartbreaks, disappointments, and first loves of life are actually stepping stones, the spiritual joys that the second half of life has in store for us. Copies of the book can be purchased from Amazon for about $12. If you are interested, please contact Margo Reign (margoreign@comcast.net) or Anne Gunn (anne_gunn@live.com). 11

12 Disciple III: Remember Who You Are Leaders: Anne Ledbetter and Anne Gunn Alternate Thursday evenings, beginning September 27 7:00 9:00 p.m. The Meeting Room Cost: $40 Remember Who You Are will meet every other Thursday evening with breaks for holidays and the summer of In a small group setting, limited to 12 participants and two leaders, we will explore together the Old Testament prophets and the Letters of Paul. The Disciple Program seeks to support transformation, not simply impart information, and draws upon the work of scholars to aid in our understanding of the Bible. Disciple encourages you as learner, believer, follower, proclaimer, and servant. Join us for this exciting adventure into the scriptures. Class size is limited, so early registration is encouraged. $40 covers the cost of the book and all other materials. For more information, contact Anne Ledbetter ( x124, anne@wpc.org) or Anne Gunn ( , anne_gunn@live.com). Disciple Short Term Course: Invitation to the New Testament Facilitator: Pamela Bailey Wednesday afternoons, September 19 November 14 12:00 noon 1:30 p.m. Classroom 5 Cost: $11 Using Matthew s gospel as a starting point, this study explores how the New Testament writers and the early Christian community wrestled with the coming of Jesus his life, actions, mission, death and resurrection and the implications of his arrival for their lives and their communities of faith. Participants are invited to study afresh this story of Jesus and to learn more about their own calling to discipleship and to community. Sessions will consist of a brief video, short lecture and discussion. Bring your lunch and a drink. The participant book is $11 and a good Study Bible (NRSV) would be helpful. Childcare is available upon request. Pick up a registration form from the main literature table at church or contact Pam Bailey (pammie.bailey@gmail.com). Friday Night Movies and Discussion Facilitator: Steve Steinwedel Fairytale: A True Story (97 minutes) Friday, October 12, 7:00 9:00 p.m. Room location to be determined check the Weekly Word and Sunday announcements Based on factual accounts, this is the story of two young girls that, somehow, have the ability to take pictures of winged beings, which certainly causes quite a stir throughout England during the time of the first World War. Everyone, except the girls who think it's quite normal, are excited about this "photographic proof" that fairies exist even the great Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini pay the girls a visit. Although fairies are the visible subjects, the enchanting video is really about faith. Each of the main characters is touched by a need to truly believe in what remains hidden. 12

13 Colour Blind (147 minutes) Friday, November 16, 7:00 9:00 p.m. Room location to be determined check the Weekly Word and Sunday announcements A poor family in post World War I England is overjoyed to hear that their daughter has come back home. Her husband is a sailor which means more income for the household. All is well until they meet him and discover he is black. Despite their poverty and his good spirit, they resent and hate him. race, class, alcoholism and self esteem through one generation to the next. You get the opportunity to witness the young child growing up in an England that everyone thinks is color blind but surprises at every turn. The young heroine, Rose Angela, must constantly deal with the questions of identity and purpose. However, this story is about more than race. We see deep seated loyalties, rebelliousness, and most of all a love that attempts to endure for both generations. This video is entertaining, highly informative about English attitudes towards race, and touching in its portrayal of people attempting to survive even the worst of times. Thus begins Dame Cookson's chronicle of a dysfunctional family dealing with the question of 13
