On September 14, 1843, five German pioneer families purchased the first acre of land on Olive Street Road for the German United Lutheran-Reformed St. Paul s Congregation at Central Township, Saint Louis County, Missouri. They paid $20 for the land and planned to build a log church. 175 Years is a long time! Cal Swan (EFCA district superintendent) and I believe our church might be the oldest church to exist in the Evangelical Free Church of America. As our Anniversary Team members (Grace Koewing, Lynn May, Judy Pfeiffer, Lela Vollmer and Pastor Mark Friz) have reviewed all the archived photos and records, they are faced with the challenge: Which pictures should be included? What details should be remembered? Therefore, your team has decided to celebrate 175 years in the following ways: We will reprint the 150th Anniversary Book and make it again available for sale. We will create a new 175th Anniversary Booklet, to be available sometime during the month of September. We will display interesting items from our archives in the Front Room and on bulletin boards around the church. 2 We will celebrate our anniversary on September 16th. We will have one combined worship service, followed by an afternoon of food, fun, and celebration. We will offer tours of our historic cemetery on request. Our worship celebrations begin in August and carry us through September. August 19: Pietistic Roots: The Early Years ( ) August 26: Upon This Rock: The Building Years ( ) September 2: Following Jesus: The Transitional Years ( ) September 9: Revive Us Again: The Reforming Years ( ) September 16 Combined Worship: Thriving in Babylon: The Transforming Years ( ) During each week, we will do much more than present a chronology of events. We will give God glory by sharing important Bible passages which have guided our past. We will make a connection to God s continued work in the year 2018 and beyond. Please be sure to reserve the entire day of September 16. We want each of you to come to church in casual dress. Please invite friends and inactive members. Our tentative schedule includes the following activities: 10:00 Combined Worship 11:30 Chicken Dinner 12:45 Program Begins Celebrating 175 Years Chris- The program will include presentations about various ministries, such as music, missions, sports and tian Education which have been an important part of our history. 2

3 Missionary in Residence Hello St. Paul's! Through a generous, anonymous donation, St. Paul's will support the launching of a new ministry in St. Louis. Marco van Raalten is a highly experienced and gifted man who has a vision to foster unity, revival, and mission in the St. Louis metro area. We anticipate this to be a great blessing to our community. We will be welcoming Marco as our Missionary in Residence for two years. He will be working out of our church on creating this independent ministry. Also, he and his family will be worshiping at our church when they arrive in St. Louis, which will be toward the end of the summer. We wanted to let the congregation know of this exciting development so we can be sure to give a loving St. Paul's welcome to Marco and his family when they arrive. If you have questions, feel free to ask any of your pastors or elders. For God's Kingdom! Pastor Brian Sanctuary Lighting Project And God said, Let there be light, and there was light. And for St. Paul s: BRIGHTER light. The beautiful new lights have been installed in the sanctuary. They provided much better lighting options, from bright to dim to dark, with new adjusted and programmable controls. Thank you to Mike Kolmer and crew for overseeing this big project. 3

4 Spiritual Sisters ABF Sundays, 9:45 a.m., Room 204 This class continues their lesson on Philippians, the Book of Joy. Learn how to get the most out of our Bibles without using study materials. Quilters and More Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Come to quilt, stitch or do quilt piecing, or to learn any of these skills. Join the group for pot luck lunch and wonderful fellowship. Women s Ministry News whether chastising or comforting, always point to Israel's final redemption and ultimate hope. Please sign up List in the Welcome Center at the Big Desk starting July, so we may order materials. Women s Fellowship No Meeting in August Women s Fellowship will not be meeting in August, as many participants are going on the trip to Urban Born Ministries and the St. Louis Arch museum. The next meeting will be September 12. Women s Bible Study Starting Wednesday, September 12 The Word of the Lord: Seeing Jesus in the Prophets by Nancy Guthrie. will be the topic for the Women s Wednesday Morning Bible Study, beginning September 12. Join this group to see Jesus in the Old Testament and in the prophets! There is a DVD presentation, discussion guide, and weekly assignments. Come explore the lives of Elijah, Elisha, Jonah, Isaiah, and others, as Nancy Guthrie reveals how God's earthly messengers, Prayer Shawl Thursday, August 23, 1:00 p.m. This month s meeting will be held at the home of Pat Ruhmann. The Group from St. Paul s Hello again, St. Paul's! Fusion - Jesus for Middle Schoolers As Christians, we believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I am also excited to announce the resurrection Fusion, St. Paul's ministry to middle school aged students. Don Andrews along with Mike and Holly King are going to be hosting this ministry monthly. You can expect food, fun, fellowship, and most of all, learning about Jesus. The first meeting will be on August 26, with more details to come. We look forward to seeing your middle schooler there! For His Kingdom, Pastor Brian Our Condolences Rick Burch, passed away July 5, 2018 at the age of 69. He is survived by his wife Judy. His funeral service was held at Kriegshauser West Chapel. John Beck passed away June 29. He is survived by his wife Sharon Nadeau. John P Altmayer passed April 14, A memorial service was held on April 19 at St. Paul's. Eunice Floyd, former member, passed away July 10. 6
