5 LETTER FROM MODERATOR OF GENERAL ASSEMBLY JOAN S. GRAY 217 General Assembly March 24, 2008 Hi friends! One ing I hate to hear coming out of e mou of a Presbyterian is AI=m just [read only] an elder.@ Hearing is statement makes my blood pressure go up. I have been known to scold e unfortunate person who said AI=m just an elder@ for not appreciating eir high office and launch into an exposition of e unique role of e elder in e Reformed tradition. If we are going to fulfill our potential as a denomination in e years ahead, we must redeem e role of elder as spiritual leader and invest more in e training and support of our elders. Our system of church government is arranged so at elders always outnumber pastors in e governing body of e local congregation, erefore no church will rise above e level of its elders. If properly trained, encouraged, and supported elders can do great ings. In Africa where e church is growing faster an ey can train pastors many congregations are led by e elders. One pastor may oversee ten or more congregations and e day to day life of e congregation is in e hands of e elders. Though we are blessed wi more pastors an e African churches, we still need to mine e leadership gifts of our elders to rise to e challenges before us. To be a Presbyterian elder is a unique and high calling, and ere=s no Ajust= about it! Peace! Joan S. Gray Moderator, 217 GA
