1 THE VINE VISITOR STREET Vine Street Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) June 2014 Telephone: 217/ ; , No. 6 Summertime The approaching summer reminds me of George Gershwin s song, Summertime. The lyrics and the laid-back melody signal a change of pace: Summertime, and the livin' is easy. Fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high. Folks are invited to relax a little more, to breathe deeply, and to enjoy the sights and sounds of the changing season. The summer may give us increased opportunities for fellowship, as neighbors linger over front porch conversations during the season s longer days. We may listen more attentively to one another and learn new things about friends and neighbors who we ve known for years. Our sense of well-being may increase as winter s isolation fades through this increased contact. We may obtain a deeper sense of the richness that comes from knowing and being known by God through these acts of fellowship and acceptance by God s people. St. Paul talks about the gift of knowing and being known in 1 Corinthians 13:12: For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. One of the deepest needs that humans have is to connect with our Creator in a way that lets us know that we are loved to the core of our being. It takes time to develop this growing sense of intimacy with God, and it is a process that continues throughout our lives until we go home to be with our Lord. In the meantime, we can catch glimpses of this divine closeness in loving Christian interactions with other people. The Reverend Nicole Chilivis quotes Richard Rohr as she writes about this process in The Christian Century: Such perfect receiving is what transforms us. Being totally received as we truly are is what we wait and long for all of our lives. A mysterious power is often felt in moments of listening. Something shifts. When a human being looks into another s eyes, accepting even the broken or unsavory parts, it evokes a deep and abiding hope. As we interact with each other this summer, let us discover this deep and abiding hope that is just a foretaste of what we ll experience in eternity with God. Pastor Dawn
2 Worship Notes Even though Children s Sunday School is out for the summer, we will continue to follow the lectionary. The scriptures and sermon titles are listed below. We will hold outdoor worship in the church courtyard on June 8. You are invited to walk & ride bikes & golf carts to church, as Park Street between Vine and Walnut will be blocked off. The pulled pork/fried chicken meal will be catered, and the cost is $5.00 per person or $15 per family. Write June 8 on the pew pad, or add your name to the sign-up sheet on the L-table by June 1 if you d like to come. THIRD QUARTER SUNDAY SCHOOL: Many thanks to the teachers who taught during the Spring Quarter: Nursery Marie Norvell (April & May); Pre-K & K Kendra Watkins, Becky Gutierrez; 1st to 3rd Shirley Edwards, Sandy Dolan; 4th to 6th Candi & Bryan Thomas; Jr. & Sr. High Sara & Dan Abercrombie; Baptism Class-Pastor Dawn; Friendly Circle Rodney Kauffman, Mary Beth and Bruce Condill, Pastor Dawn; Future Builders/Willing Workers Ann Huffman. Thank you to all of the other teachers who have taught this year! PENTECOST OFFERING: The Pentecost Offering, which supports the establishment of new Disciples of Christ congregations, will be received June 1 and June 8. This is the second year that the churches in our Lakeland Cluster have asked each other to set an individual church goal for the Pentecost Offering. Then, these individual goals are combined to create a collective goal for the Cluster. Our church s contribution to the collective Lakeland Cluster goal (of $3,200) is $150. The purpose of this multi-church effort is to demonstrate our solidarity with other Disciples churches in our area as we work together To be and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, witnessing, loving and serving from our doorsteps to the ends of the earth. - Acts 1:8.

Through Christmas and Easter (Lenten) Benefit Concerts and Singing Valentines, the group raises annually nearly $8,000 for area food pantries, homeless shelters and high school vocal music programs. Performing at church worship services provides an opportunity for the CCC to not only praise the Lord, but also to thank congregations for their encouragement. On Saturday, June 7th at 4:00 PM in the Dvorak Concert Hall on the EIU Campus, the 30 man chorus and four local quartets will perform their 45th Annual Summer Show, Barbershop Buccaneers...Pirates. It is their only moneymaker for the year. As always, it will be a fun filled program, for folks of all ages and it will be FAMILY FRIENDLY.
