4 President s Message Hi Everyone! Merry Christmas everyone! I hope that all of you are having a wonderful Holiday season! I have to say that this is my favorite time of the year. All the lights on houses and Christmas songs playing on the radio. It reminds me of when I was a kid. I think the only thing missing is the snow! LOL I have to say that this has been a pretty good year for LBMG. We have had a lot of great events and fun racing. Speaking of events, we have our last one this month, St. Nix Trix! Jim and Amy say it is going to be a short - easy one... Yeah Right! LOL!!! The information regarding this festive event is located on the next page (pg 3). Richard and I hope to see a lot of you there! Mark your calendars for our Installation Banquet. It will be on January 26th. Look for the info on page 4. We are going back to the same place as the last 2 years, Recreation Park 18 Golf Course. This is always a lot of fun and hope to see a lot of you there. I truly hope that everyone has wonderful Christmas and a Very Happy New Year! Christmas Fun Facts 1. The Montgomery Ward department store created Rudolph the Reindeer as a marketing gimmick to encourage children to buy their Christmas coloring books. 2. The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo. 3. America s first batch of eggnog was made in the Jamestown settlement in Its name comes from the word grog, meaning any drink made with rum. Nonalcoholic eggnog is popular as well. 4. In 1914 during World War I there was a now famous Christmas truce in the trenches between the British and the Germans. They exchanged gifts across a neutral no man s land, played football together, and decorated their shelters. 5. The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed. 6. Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver. 7. If you gave all the gifts listed in the Twelve Days of Christmas, it would equal 364 gifts. 2

12 5 British Christmas Words and Phrases Not Widely Used in the U.S. - by Laurence Brown Father Christmas or Santa Claus? - As if getting to grips with a multitude of new Christmas customs wasn t already a challenge for Brits in America, the language of Christmas is equally complex. Indeed, when I first moved to the United States in the winter of 2008, I became almost immediately the source of light-hearted ridicule for wording my festive greetings in a manner I had, until that point, assumed to be universal. How wrong I was. Here are five British Christmas words and phrases that are not widely used in the U.S. Happy Christmas - If you grew up or spent a fair amount of time in the U.K., chances are you either used or received the greeting Happy Christmas on a routine basis around the holidays. And what could be more simple and cheerful than those two words? Well, in the United States, these same two words though popularized in the U.S. by John Lennon s Happy Christmas (War is Over apparently sound unusual to an American ear. Instead, the phrases Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays are preferred. Father Christmas - Of course, both countries identify the jolly giver of presents as Santa Claus or simply Santa. However, Brits might be just as accustomed to the more traditional title of Father Christmas a tradition that, much to my initial surprise, does not extend across the pond. Moreover, Father Christmas and Santa Claus were not historically the same person. The name Father Christmas emerged during the 17th century as the personification of Christmas, surviving puritanical efforts to oust him with a resurgence in the Victorian age. Toward the end of the 19th century, Father Christmas became more akin to the American Santa Claus until eventually, both were seen as one and the same. As for the question of where Santa lives, let s move on to the next entry. Lapland - Whether you call him Santa, St. Nick, or Father Christmas, there s one thing we can all agree on: Father Christmas lives and works in Lapland. But this is isn t true to the good people of the United States. Actually, not only is it not true, but most Americans will think you ve been at the eggnog again if the word Lapland leaves your mouth. To them, Santa s true home is the North Pole. Chrimbo/Crimble - From the formal to the completely informal. The word Chrimbo (or sometimes Crimbo ) is first attested from 1928, while the first recorded usage of the variant form Crimble is coincidentally attributed to a personality named previously in this article: John Lennon. The former Beatle can be heard saying it on the 1963 Beatles Fan Club Christmas record. However, make no mistake, expats; neither the word Chrimbo nor its variants are widely used in the U.S. and the deployment of these otherwise majestic words at an American Christmas function will likely be met with confusion, derision, laughter, or all of the above. Boxing Day - In Britain (and several Commonwealth countries), Boxing Day is the day following Christmas and serves as a bank/public holiday. While the exact etymology of the phrase is unclear, it may have been named for the boxes that servants and tradesmen would receive from their employers at Christmas. Not only is the practice of Boxing Day not incorporated into the American Christmas calendar, but many Americans simply don t recognize the phrase itself. Indeed, I ve heard it inferred more than once that the word boxing is associated with the sport of the same name. 10

13 Christmas Traditions: Britain vs. America by Laurence Brown As with many cultural differences between the U.K. and the United States, you d be forgiven for believing that Christmas is the same on either side of the Pond. After all, Christmas is Christmas, right? Well, while the overall message of Yuletide is largely the same in both countries, there are some subtle, if crucial, variations. The language of Christmas, for instance, is not strictly uniform. Americans will chuckle to themselves (or appear bemused) if you wish them Happy Christmas (as opposed to Merry Christmas ), while the shortening of Christmas to Chrimbo is almost universally unknown in the United States. Come to that, so is the name Father Christmas ; Americans refer to him as Santa Claus or simply Santa. Whatever his name, it is widely held in the U.S. that Santa resides along with his reindeer, his helpers and, of course Mrs. Claus in the North Pole. Most Americans would think you ve had one too many snowballs if you mentioned Lapland. Actually, snowballs are also largely unheard of in America at least by name. The closest equivalent stateside to that lovely mixture of Advocaat and lemonade is egg nog, a spiced eggbased drink often mixed with some sort of liquor (usually bourbon, rum or brandy). Indeed, you might very well enjoy egg nog while sitting down to a good old American Christmas dinner. Except, don t necessarily expect to eat turkey. Americans reserve that particular food item for Thanksgiving, and often opt for ham or roast beef on Christmas Day. Moreover, traditional Christmas desserts such as Christmas cake, Christmas pudding and mince pies are not particularly popular in the U.S. More likely, your post-meal treat will take the form of one of the following: pumpkin pie, marzipan, fruit cake, apple pie, pecan pie, coconut cake or sweet potato pie. During the dinner, of course, we Brits are used to putting on our paper hats and pulling a Christmas cracker with a fellow diner. No such luck in the United States, where paper hats are less common and Christmas crackers are virtually unheard of. Just think of all the rubbish jokes Americans are missing out on! You might think the absence of the Christmas cracker would make for a rather underwhelming Boxing Day the day after Christmas, when the remaining crackers are often pulled. Except Americans don t even celebrate Boxing Day (though it is a nationally recognized holiday in Canada). Indeed, upon your insistence that December 26 should mark another day off from work, many Americans will assume you ve had one too many egg nog cocktails. One thing America does have in abundance, though, is lights. The extravagant Christmas decorations you may have seen in films like Home Alone are real, and some homeowners even turn their houses into full-on light shows with Christmas-themed music blasting from a PA system. Driving through American suburbia at Christmas can sometimes feel like a tour of Disney World. Continued on page 18 11

Respectfully Submitted, Amy Tulk Recording Secretary Christmas Traditions: Britain vs. America Continued: But while the U.S. is big on its Christmas music, there are a couple of musical traditions that are noticeably absent from its Christmas calendar. Firstly, there is no place in American popular culture for the Christmas number one! Despite the popularity of shows such as American Idol and X-Factor (the latter of which has, to much derision, produced several Christmas number one artists in the U.K.), the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 does not place extra emphasis on the artist or group that is number one at Christmas. Secondly, at a time of year when Brits are used to seeing washed-up celebrities ply their seasonal trade in the latest pantomime, the U.S a country steeped in show business history does not follow suit. Indeed, on the whole, Americans don t even know what a pantomime is. For all of these subtle differences, though, even the most stubborn of British expats would find it hard not to enjoy Christmas with its multitude of lights and bombast in America. The key point is that both countries are very good at harnessing the Christmas spirit. After all, Christmas is Christmas, right? 18

22 More Christmas Fun Facts! NORAD s Santa Tracker was born from a misprint in the newspaper. A 1955 Sears ad was supposed to print the number of a store where children could call and tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas. The number printed was to the hotline of the Director of Operations for the U.S. Continental Air Defense. Colonel Shoup ordered his staff to give the children updates on the flight coordinates of Santa. A tradition began and continues until this day. NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) continues to provide flight updates on local news, the Internet, and even a special iphone application every Christmas.
