1 The Newsletter of All Saints Cathedral Parish Bathurst and St Barnabas Parish South Bathurst Sunday 23rd September 2018 Eighteenth Sunday After Pentecost I n last week's reading from Mark, Jesus had told the disciples about the suffering he was to undergo and the requirement that following him also meant suffering. In this week's lesson, Jesus again tells his disciples that he will be betrayed and killed and will rise again. Mark tells us that Jesus restricted this knowledge to the disciples because he didn't want anyone else to know it. I'm wondering if he really needed to be so restrictive about the information. After all, the disciples not only did not understand what he meant; they were afraid to ask him to explain it all to them. Something apparently they did understand was priority. They argued about who was the greatest. Jesus answered this concern by giving a lesson and an example. An example that told them what greatest meant to him. He said "Whoever wants to be first must be last and servant of all." He then showed them a little child and said, "When you welcome the weak and defenceless, you are welcoming me." Not only are we great when we help the weak, we also see him in the weak. Sue Whitt Lord, lead me in humbleness. Teach me not to judge, because in judgment in my heart limits your work. Let me find forgiveness through humbleness. As you lead in humility may mercy be companion, and grace my covering. Through humility, may love be seen in me. May I find god s truth, Jesus Christ in humility. Lord, help me wear the cloak of humility. May it be my mantle. In Jesus Name, Amen. L Clarkson LUNCHTIME CONCERTS All Saints Cathedral and Mitchell Conservatorium present the Spring Series of lunchtime concerts featuring Music from Harp. The next will be on Monday 8 October, featuring Robyn Godfrey and Kym Deacon (Harp Cello and Voice). Everyone is welcome to enjoy these concerts from pm with a $5 donation to All Saints Cathedral. FRIENDS OF THE CATHEDRAL The Friends of the Cathedral invite you to High Tea & Music with Michael Deasey OAM, on Friday 19 October from 2-4pm in the Cathedral Chapter House. Michael will delight your musical appetite whilst you enjoy a delicious high tea. Tickets are $30pp and can be purchased from the Cathedral Parish Office. (No EFTPOS is available). CATHEDRAL SHOP Volunteers are needed to work in the Cathedral Shop from Friday 19 October to Friday 2 November with the hours of Tuesday to Friday from 10am-4pm which can be covered in shifts. A draft roster is in the Narthex of the Cathedral. Perhaps you can volunteer with a friend. Assistance will be greatly appreciated. WORLD COMMUNITY DAY Bathurst Presbyterian Church invites you to attend World Community Day sponsored by Australian Church Women Inc. on Monday 22 October from 1.30pm at the Presbyterian Church Bathurst. ST NICHOLAS FAIR SATURDAY 1 DECEMBER Working Bees for St Nicholas Fair Many hands make light work so, as well as meeting for Fellowship on the first Monday of the month, we are meeting together every fortnight in the Abbott Room at the Cathedral to make contributions, with a Christmas Theme, for the Craft Stall at our St Nicholas Fair on the 1 st December! Everyone is welcome, crafty or not, there shall be something there for you to help make!! The next Working Bee will be on Monday, 15 October from am to 2.00 pm. 3 Today s Readings In Context James 3:1-12 The letter of James tries to unify the community by solving doctrinal disputes and giving practical advice for living together peacefully. This passage traces some of the communities problems to the peoples' feelings of jealousy. Mark 9:30-37 In this passage, the disciples fail to understand Jesus' second prediction of his suffering, death and resurrection. Then they show that they don't understand Jesus' convictions about greatness and humility, either. Baptism The Way To Freedom When parents have their children baptised they indicate their desire to have their children grow up and live as children of God and brothers or sisters of Jesus, and be guided by the Holy Spirit. Through birth a child is given to parents; through baptism a child is given to God. At baptism the parents acknowledge that their parenthood is a participation in God s parenthood, that all fatherhood and motherhood comes from God. Thus baptism frees the parents from a sense of owning their children. Children belong to God and are given to the parents to love and care for in God s name. It is the parents vocation to welcome their children as honoured guests in their home and bring them to the physical, emotional, and spiritual freedom that enables them to leave the home and become parents themselves. Baptism reminds parents of this vocation and sets children on the path of freedom. Henri Nouwen THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK MOTHERS UNION AUTSTRALIA 23 SEPTEMBER HARMONY When two or three are gathered together there may be a harmony of prayer and praise. We dream that hearts beating as one, voices declaring the same opinion, with no opposition, no contention will lead to perfect harmony. Harmony is best achieved when you let me serve you, let me be as Christ to you. When we sing to God in heaven we shall find such harmony, born of all we ve known together of Christ s love and agony. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Romans 16, 18 Members in India face the disharmony of gender -based violence and women s disempowerment. May God s mercy be upon as they champion the cause of harmony for all. 4 A READING FROM THE PROPHET JEREMIAH ( ) It was the Lord who made it known to me, and I knew; then you showed me their evil deeds. But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter. And I did not know it was against me that they devised schemes, saying, Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, let us cut him off from the land of the living, so that his name will no longer be remembered! But you, O Lord of hosts, who judge righteously, who try the heart and the mind, let me see your retribution upon them, for to you I have committed my cause. FOR THE WORD OF THE LORD Thanks be to God A READING FROM THE LETTER OF JAMES (3.1-12) Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell. For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no one can tame the tongue a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh. FOR THE WORD OF THE LORD Thanks be to God FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARK ( ) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ They went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again. But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him. Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, What were you arguing about on the way? But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all. Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me. FOR THE GOSPEL OF THE LORD Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ Draw me deeper into fellowship with You, Father. Lead me to focus on worship, so that I can then, as a result, be useful in service.
