1 Women in the Word Proverbs: Words October 4, How has the gift of speech been a delight to you? What is your biggest struggle with your words? 2. Read Proverbs 10:20, 20:15 and 25:11,12. What do these verses tell you about your words and speech? Our words and speech are an awesome, valuable gift. Read Proverbs 16:1b. According to this verse, from whom do we receive this valuable gift? 3. When Adam and Eve were created, they were created in the image of God, a God who desires to communicate with His creation. Read the following portions of Scripture and record the different things communicated in each one. Genesis 2:15-17 Genesis 2:18 Genesis 2:19-20 Genesis 2:23-24 Genesis 3:1-5 Genesis 3:6
2 Women In the Word Proverbs: Words Oct. 4, 2012 Page 2 4. In the verses from Genesis in question 3, we see that words and speech can be used to do good, as well as to do evil. There are numerous references to the tongue throughout the entire Bible, and the book of Proverbs contains over 70 references. Read the following verses from Proverbs and record what each one says about using our words and speech for good or evil. GOOD EVIL Proverbs 11:9 Proverbs 11:13 Proverbs 12:17 Proverbs 15:1 Proverbs 15:2 Proverbs 15:4 Proverbs 15:7 Proverbs 17:28 Proverbs 24:28 Proverbs 31:26 The 10 verses above are only a small portion of the many verses in Proverbs that address your words and speech. Why do you think so much attention has been given to this topic? 5. Can you think of a time when words spoken to you (positive or negative) had a lasting effect on you? If so, please explain. Can you recall a time when your words (positive or negative) had an impact on someone else? If so, please explain.
3 Women In the Word Proverbs: Words Oct. 4, 2012 Page 3 6. Even though you might understand the importance and the power of your words and speech, why do you think you are sometimes careless when speaking to others? 7. Read Proverbs 22:17, Proverbs 23:12, Proverbs 26:23, Proverbs 27:19, Matthew 12:34, Matthew 15:18 and Luke 6:45. According to these verses, what is the important factor that determines how we speak? 8. Read Proverbs 10:13,14 and 16:20. In your own words, explain how you will prepare your heart so that you can use your words for good. 9. Read Proverbs 10:11, 18:6, 18:21, 19:9 and 21:28. In the space below, give examples of ways the tongue has the power of life. Give examples of how the tongue has the power of death. In light of this, how do you see God calling you to change your speech? 10. Which proverb from this week s study will you memorize? How will you incorporate it into your daily life? 11. Do you have a personal prayer request to share with your small group?

5 Women in the Word Proverbs: Words October 4, 2012 Proverbs 18:21 The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat of its fruit. James 3:3 5 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. Proverbs 16:1 To man belong the plans of the heart, but from the Lord comes the reply of the tongue. Ecclesiastes 5:2 Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few. Ephesians 4:3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Deuteronomy 6:6 7 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Titus 2:3 5 Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers, or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. 2Timothy 2:2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses, entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.
