1 The Newsletter of All Saints Cathedral Parish Bathurst and St Barnabas Parish South Bathurst Sunday 21 October 2018 Twenty Second Sunday After Pentecost T his Gospel reading opens as James and John come to Jesus and say: Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask. What bold words! Did James and John actually believe that Jesus would simply obey their command? However, Jesus does not seem to be ruffled or upset. Rather he simply asks them: What do you want me to do for you? They responded: Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left. Jesus warns them: You do not know what you are asking! Jesus then asks them: Can you truly drink the cup that I drink? Are you willing to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized? James and John blithely respond with the words: We can! Jesus then says to them: The cup that I drink, you will drink, and the baptism with which I was baptized, you also will be baptized. However, your request to sit at my right and left hand is not mine to give. Rather it will be given to those for whom it has been prepared. Remember: this conversation takes place in the presence of the other disciples. Now put yourself in the place of the other 10 disciples. What are the emotions you think they may have experienced as these two men boldly make their request to Jesus? After all, each one of the disciples had left their families, homes and work to follow Jesus. Did James and John truly think they were better than the other disciples? Or were they simply trying to gain a higher position and also have more influence with Jesus? The desire for power and status is an inherent longing in most human beings. Each one of us needs to know that we do have a certain amount of power and status. Power gives us some control in our lives. We also have a natural desire for the people in our lives to love us, care for us and admire us. However, we get in trouble when our desire for power, love or status begins to control us. This is why Jesus sternly warns his disciples. Jesus desires that we serve others rather than to be served. He wants us to use our energy to serve those in need, rather than striving for first place, for acclaim or for power. Every day in our world numerous people jockey for power, esteem and position. This need is so inherent in us human beings that often we do not recognize the subtle ways we strive for power, esteem or position. I wonder if our need to serve others is as natural to us as our need and desire for recognition and power. Today take a few moments and ask yourself: How strong is my need for power and acclaim? How deep is my need to serve others? Which need comes first in my life? Jesus primary desire is that we quietly and simply love and serve the individuals in our lives as he did. If we do this well, we will receive the acclaim we desire from Jesus. Can we be satisfied with this? I pray we can! For he will command his angels: to keep you in all your ways. They will bear you up in their hands: lest you dash your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the adder: the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot. He has set his love upon me, and therefore I will deliver him: I will lift him out of danger, because he has known my name. When he calls upon me I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble, I will rescue him and bring him to honour. With long life I will satisfy him: and fill him with my salvation. We worship on the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri people and we honour and pay our respects to elders past and present.

CANCER COUNCIL FUNDRAISER The Cathedral Shop held A Pink Ribbon Day last week with $96.55 raised for breast and gynaecological cancers. Thank you to Tania Harvey for coordinating this fundraiser. The winner of the raffle was Kathy Keech. ALLEGRI SINGERS The Allegri Singers and Mitchell Conservatorium will feature a concert of beautiful music by French composer, Gabriel Faure in the Cathedral on Sunday 4 November from 2.30pm. MEMORIAL SERVICE An invitation is extended to all parishioners and friends to attend a Memorial Service in the Cathedral on Thursday 8 November at 7pm to honour and commemorate the lives of those who have died. Everyone is very welcome. LUNCHTIME CONCERTS All Saints Cathedral and Mitchell Conservatorium present the Spring Series of lunchtime concerts featuring Music from Harp. The next is on Monday 12 November, featuring Bethany Carter (Classical Harp). Commencing at pm with a $5 donation to All Saints Cathedral.

3 Today s Readings In Context Isaiah 53:4-12 The middle part of the book of the prophet Isaiah contains four poems that we now call the songs of the suffering servant. His suffering wasn't punishment for sin. It mysteriously offered justification to others. Jesus, and the gospel writers, meditated on these passages. Mark 10:35-45 In two related sayings, Jesus asks his disciples to think differently about their status and ambition, and to choose their place in light of his own coming suffering and death. Sacred Space Meditation on Today s Gospel The two brothers act out of total self-interest here. In the words of Jesus, they clearly do not know what they are asking. To think of the kingdom of God in terms of power and status is simplistic and small-minded. Am I generally self-seeking in my relations with God and others? Christian leadership is not like human authority nor is it based upon power and lording it over others. Quite the contrary, it is genuine when expressed in service. Jesus came not to be served but to serve. What about me? How am I of service to others? Sydney Carter s jaunty hymn picks up the notion of the Way along which Jesus took his disciples and on which we are called to journey., [In All Together no 200; Common Praise 548.] But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. Proverbs 4: 18 In Zimbabwe and Malawi Mothers Union members journey alongside their sisters. They are helping Mrs Moyo, a disabled single mum, so she can send her children to school. Education is very important in Zimbabwe, and with members help school fees and blankets for orphans, children and parents can journey forward with confidence and faith in the future. In Malawi Mothers Union travels in Jesus steps helping to develop healthy communities and families. 4 A READING FROM THE PROPHET ISAIAH ( ) Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people. They made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him with pain. When you make his life an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days; through him the will of the LORD shall prosper. Out of his anguish he shall see light; he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge. The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. FOR THE WORD OF THE LORD Thanks be to God A READING FROM A LETTER OF PAUL TO THE HEBREWS (5.1-10) Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honour, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, You are my Son, today I have begotten you ; as he says also in another place, You are a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchizedek. In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. And he said to them, What is it you want me to do for you? And they said to him, Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory. But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptised with the baptism that I am baptised with? They replied, We are able. Then Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptised; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared. When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognise as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all.
