And who needs our love more than those who are consumed with hatred and are utterly devoid of love? -Dietrich Bonhoeffer Affectionately yours St. Valentine, a Roman priest, was martyred in 270 A.D. for loving Jesus. Some sources say he performed weddings after the emperor banned them; others say he rescued Christians from Roman prisons. Two centuries later, the pope declared February 14 St. Valentine s Day. According to legend, the priest signed this letters Your Valentine. Later, Christians followed suit to honor him. By the mid-1700s, friends and sweethearts exchanged heart-shaped trinkets or sent handwritten notes of affection on February 14. 3 February Worship Series The Body of Christ - Part Two Pastor Mike Dyrdal Sunday, February 24 Compassion - the Heart of Healing Matthew 9:35-10:1 & Matthew 15:29-32 Jesus identified with the pain of others. The hungry, lonely, sick, grieving and lost were embraced by him. Compassion is at the heart of the healing ministry of Jesus. It continues to be the call of all Christ followers. Pastor Shirley Duncanson preaches. In February we further pursue the image of the Church as the Body of Christ in the world today. As Christ followers we are called to do the same stuff that Jesus did inviting others to follow, discipling by teaching and learning from Christ, and healing hurts and relieving suffering. Sunday, February 3 The Head of the Body Christ based on Ephesians 1: God shares with us the same amazing power that raised Jesus from the tomb, and we live as Jesus presence in the world today. Pastor Mike preaches. Sunday, February 10 Position Yourself to Thrive Mark 4: 1-20 As the Body of Christ, we place ourselves in situations where we can grow and flourish. Is there some clutter in your life getting in the way of your thriving? Pastor Mike preaches. Sunday, February 17 You re Invited Luke 14; 7-14 & John 21: 4-8 There s nothing better than being invited, accepted, wanted and feeling special. We re invited to be served at God s table as well as hosting and inviting others to join us. As the body of Christ we are called to stretch our boundaries and go beyond our comfort zones to carry the good news to all people in all ways. Pastor Rachel Deveraux preaches. Special General Conference this month on The Way Forward If you follow the news in our United Methodist denomination, you might have heard there is a special session of the General Conference coming February in St. Louis, MO. Usually this gathering of UM leaders from around the world occurs every four years. In fact, Minneapolis will be hosting the General Conference in But this month a special session is coming together to see if United Methodists can find a way forward in the face of perpetual disagreements over homosexuality. A few years ago UM Bishops formed a commission of persons from every geographical and theological wing of the church around the world, asking them to develop plans and legislation for the larger church to consider. This Commission on a Way Forward met nine times over a year and a half and came up with three possible plans for the future. The Traditionalist Plan was not recommended or affirmed by the commission or the Council of Bishops. It would maintain the current global United Methodist teaching on human sexuality, which basically states that the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching and is not condoned for UM ordained and appointed leaders. This plan simultaneously seeks to increase accountability for pastors, churches, and annual conferences who willfully violate UM standards. This plan also sought to include a gracious exit provision that would allow individual congregations or entire annual conferences that could not live with the current positions on sexuality to withdraw from the United Methodist Church with their property intact. Continued on page 4... Page 3

4 Continued from page 3 The One Church Plan, which has been endorsed by the Council of Bishops, would remove all of the restrictive language on homosexuality from our Book of Discipline. It would then allow, but not require, United Methodist clergy to perform same-gender weddings where legal, and allow, but not require, annual conferences to ordain LGBTQ pastors. Supporters of the One Church Plan argue it would create space to allow pastors and congregations to contextualize their ministry. The Connectional Conference Plan is more difficult to describe. It would create three conferences in the U.S. based on values instead of geography. One connectional conference would be comprised of churches and pastors who support current UM traditional teaching and standards on sexuality. A second connectional conference would reflect the values of the one church plan. The third would be a progressive conference and require all clergy and churches to be fully inclusive. Annual Conferences such as Minnesota would vote on which Connectional Conference they wished to join. A local church would be allowed to disagree with the approach taken by their annual conference, and could vote to affiliate with a different connectional conference. The three Connectional Conferences would have their own Bishops and operate separately, but would come together under one umbrella to support global missional and relief programs. Our own Bishop Ough has said he sees big difficulties with implementing this plan. Apparently this would require the passage of nine constitutional amendments to be implemented a daunting task. You can find a good summary of each plan at this site: way+forward+umc/summary+of+3+plans.pdf Each plan faces obstacles, in terms of whether it is constitutional according to UM rules, therefore it s impossible to know what if any legislation will pass. As you can guess if you are still reading, this is difficult to communicate in a short space. You can dig for more information at a site created by several bishops - onechurchplan.org For a fairly mainstream take on things you might visit um-insight.net. You'll likely find another variety of viewpoints with a comprehensive listing of articles at And if you are really ambitious, you can read all three plans (240 pages) in their entirety at: l-conference/2019/documents/generalconference-2019-adca-english.pdf As a pastor who has served churches with members holding varying perspectives, I personally have tried to live with an agree to disagree and think and let think approach. It always seemed wise to hold onto both personal conviction and humility, in order to serve diverse congregations. But as we all well know, our world does not always want or allow various viewpoints to have a place at the table. I came to United Methodism from another denomination. One of the things that attracted me to the Wesley movement and approach was the strong commitment to Jesus Christ along with Methodism s sense of humility and a willingness to reach out, embrace, and converse with others who think or see things differently. I pray that this special quality of the UM church will remain. As the special General Conference approaches, I invite you to hold the sessions (February 23-26) in serious prayer. Our Bishops have recommended the following spiritual practices 1. Engage in a weekly Wesleyan 24-hour fast from Thursday after dinner to Friday midafternoon. Those who have health situations in which food fasts are not recommended might consider fasting from social media, , or another daily activity. 2. Pause and pray for our church s mission and way forward daily for four minutes from 2:23 through 2:26 a.m. or p.m. in your own time zone (or at another time of your choosing). The reason for the recommended time period is that the Special Session of General Conference will be held Feb , Here s a prayer you might start with from a Joaquina: God, we are grateful that you choose us to be your vessels as you transform the world for which you so deeply care. We give thanks for each delegate to General Conference and pray you might pour your wisdom upon them. And unite them in your Spirit. May the love for Jesus and for each other prevail even in the midst of differences. Amen. Please pray for General Conference each day. Pastor Mike Page 4
