1 January 2016 WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 125 WEST ONTARIO, PO BOX 237, ROGERS CITY, MI PHONE: rcwestminster@gmail.com Rev. Greg - revgregrc@yahoo.com, Rev. Karen revkarenrc@yahoo.com Home Phone: Website: rcwpc.org Revs. Karen & Greg Zurakowski Greetings in Christ! Happy New Year! Our prayer is that 2016 will be fulfilling and joyful for each of you! We enjoyed a wonderful Advent and Christmas season, and even though the white Christmas we all hoped for came a little late, our first major holiday as your co-pastors was a source of great joy for us! January offers a bit of a respite from the craziness of Christmas and New Year s celebrations, before we enter into Lent, another time of preparation on the church calendar. Cabin Fever Rendezvous Sunday, January 10 Noon-5:00 p.m. Take down decorations on Monday, January 11 10:00 Take down the tree on Tuesday, January 12 10:00 Annual Reports of Committees due in church office - Friday, January 15. Annual Congregational Meeting Sunday Noon The five weeks between Epiphany and the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday is called Ordinary Time in the church year, one of two extended periods of time during which there are no major events to be observed or festivals to be celebrated; it is a time when the everyday work of the church takes place, and a time when we as individuals can make the lessons of Christmas a part of our very souls. This is a precious gift, because it s all-too-easy to get wrapped up in the excitement and busyness of preparing for a big event (like Christmas or Easter), and in the process lose sight of why we re preparing; Ordinary Time presents us with the opportunity to think and pray about the important things in our lives with fewer distractions. Really, there s nothing at all ordinary about Ordinary Time! (continued on next page)
2 Now for a bit of business; soon you will be receiving a follow-up letter regarding the stewardship effort; we hope that you have had the opportunity to think and pray about your support for the ongoing ministries of Westminster Presbyterian Church. We earnestly desire as much of your time and talent as you can afford; and we would be appreciative of your financial support as well, but only you can decide whether or not a financial pledge will fit into your household s budget for We are looking forward to 2016, with great anticipation; our first six months with you have been glorious, and we only expect things to get better! There s nothing quite so rewarding as serving Christ together with folks who obviously get a high from doing good works; it is a great privilege to share the journey with you! See you in worship! Rev. Karen & Rev. Greg Christian Education Committee News Sunday School will be held at 9:45 a.m. each Sunday. A youth group is still in the planning stages. Please let the committee know if you have any ideas for gettogethers or field trips with the youth. Adult Study An Adult Bible Study is being planned during Lent, which begins in February. Watch the bulletins for more details. Let s Brunch Sunday, 12:30 p.m. at Kortman s Restaurant Come Join the Fun Please sign up on the sheet on the desk in the narthex. Everyone is welcome! Help Needed: Monday, January 11, 10:00 a.m. Taking down and putting away the Christmas decorations. Tuesday, January 12, 10:00 a.m. Taking down the Christmas tree. Thank you to all who helped with the decorating. The church was simple beautiful!
3 When? Sunday, January 10 What Time? Following church service until about 5:00 p.m. Where? Westminster Church Dining Room Attire? Very casual camp camos and Saturday jeans Come one, come all! Meet You Neighbor We are so happy to have another neighbor submit their info. Thank you Lois, it was fun getting to know you better. Lois Plichta I am Lois Plichta. I moved to Rogers city with my husband, Arnold in October 1989 from Plymouth, Michigan. I was born in Plymouth to Mamie and Clifford Bryan on December 25 th. My twenty year old sister Evelyn greeted me. I graduated from Plymouth High school in Arnold and I met at Riverside Roller Rink in Livonia, Michigan. We were married at First Presbyterian Church, Plymouth on October 30, I m a member of First Presbyterian today. We had two daughters, Diane and Carol. Arnold had a cousin in Rogers City, Shirley and Len McLennan, who was a barber in Rogers City and lived on First Street. We were close friends. Arnold liked Lake Huron to fish and duck hunt better than Lake Michigan. We have one Grandson, Aaron McMann, son of Diane and he lives in Alpena. Arnold passed away on April 20, 2010, at Rogers City Tendercare, where he had very good care for four years. He was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Plymouth, on his 90 th birthday. I will join him there some day. I enjoy gardening, word finding and sewing. I also like volunteering on committees. (Note from Linda) Lois volunteered for years for Hospice of Michigan and was a SUPER valuable helper! Annual Congregational Meeting Sunday, Following the Worship Service Please Note: Committee Reports need to be in the church office by 11:59 a.m. on Friday, January 15, 2016 in order to be included in the Annual Report for Westminster. Thank you for your consideration.
