This is the place where we ll work together to build skills designed to enhance your teaching experience and help you find new ways to improve your kids learning! This quarter s skill builder focuses on... Discovery Learning Children (like the rest of us!) learn more from what they do than from what they hear or see. So it s always wise to use activities that reinforce the focus of a lesson. But how do we select the best activities for our kids? We want them to gain as much as they can from each activity. Here are some things to consider: Is it suitable? As you look at an activity idea, think about the children in your class you know them best! Will the activity work for the age, number of children, interest and skill level of the class? Consider their learning styles and their environment inner-city, suburban or rural as you choose and customize activities. 3

Skills 101 Don t let a small classroom or a limited budget keep your class from great learning! Think of ways to creatively use available resources. If there is no money for art supplies, ask church members to donate paper and markers. If a classroom is too small for games, arrange time for students to use the fellowship hall or an outdoor patio. How well does it connect? Does the activity support the objectives of the lesson or is it a time-filler? Children need to have fun, but they also need activities that help them discover how to apply Bible concepts. Is the activity clearly connected? Is the point too complicated to sum up in a sentence? If it s too convoluted, use something that requires less explanation. And be sure to help kids with their own personal discovery learning! Include activities designed to help them learn to use their Bibles and Bible reference tools. Is it life-related? When your lesson has one Bible truth for the students to grasp, all of the day s learning should connect that truth to everyday life. For example, if the truth is that we obey God by being honest, an effective game activity will help each student to describe situations and ways in which they can show honesty. Tips on Leading Learning Activities Sum up the purpose. Tell students why you re doing an activity. They may see the fun of it, but your conversation will point students toward a higher purpose: We re going to make a 3-D mural to help us remember we can trust God to take care of us. Give clear directions. Children quickly lose interest if they don t understand what to do. Explain clearly what is expected and how students can accomplish their tasks. Write directions on a whiteboard or large sheet of paper for reference. Have supplies nearby and organized. Let children work at their own pace. Once the project is explained and students begin working, avoid the temptation to do it for them. Let children proceed at their own pace. Let students make choices and mistakes. Allow students the freedom to ask for help instead of anticipating their needs. Treat them as smart and capable people and they will quickly show that they are! Have additional activities for students who finish early so the slower students need not rush. Everyone s process is valuable. 4

Skills 101 Use guided conversation. Use comments and questions during the learning activity to help students connect the activity to the lesson s Bible truth. I enjoyed reading your comic strip about showing patience at home. What s a way to be patient at school? or Nathan, thank you for helping clean up! That kind of helping is something the Bible tells us to do. Summarize. Give yourself a few minutes near the end of the session to ask students to summarize what they learned. What was one important thing learned by the boy who shared his lunch? If students cannot answer, then ask additional questions or tell an example from your own life to extend students understanding. Share learning. Information is best learned when it s passed on to others! Teaching is the best way to learn. Encourage students to tell their parents and friends what they learned in class. Let students lead an activity for a class of younger children. Students can share their learning by giving short talks to the congregation during worship or a church event. Children who are shy about public speaking can write statements for other students to read. Artwork can be displayed during an open house. Use every method of communication so that you re sure to hit the sweet spot for every student! 5

Luke 1:5-80 Promises Kept Dear Teacher, Implied in a promise is wait time. Whatever is promised doesn t happen immediately. I can t hurry a promise someone makes, whether it s watering the garden or texting me after arriving safely home. I can only wait until the promise is fulfilled in good time. Jesus birth is a beautiful example of the expectancy of a promise and its fulfillment. God promised both Elizabeth and Mary that they would have sons. They felt their expectation grow in their physical bodies as well as their longing souls. All of creation also was expecting. Imagine the explosion of joy released in the universe when Jesus arrived! This season, I realize there is even more to celebrate than Christ s birth. I celebrate that God keeps His promises. Let us celebrate the joy and salvation available every day, as we choose to live in Christ. Kim Fiano Editor Big Idea We can celebrate because God kept His promise to send Jesus. Action Plan Thank God for His great love and promises. Bible Verse For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 6

Winter Lesson 1 Connecting You to Jesus The Bible contains many promises of God s care and providence, but the greatest promise was to send a Savior. Long before Christ s birth, Isaiah the prophet recorded God s Word to His people: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14) and For to us a child is born, to us a son is given (Isaiah 9:6). God loves us so much that He promised to give us everlasting life through Jesus our Savior, His Son. The birth of Christ is evidence that God keeps His Holy Word! Lesson Materials The basics (see contents) Party blower Get Thinking balloons Materials for Art or Game activity (see pp ) Lesson Extras! 1. Students learn the books of the Bible by playing Bible Book Fill-In (on CD-ROM). Use the first eight books of the New Testament for this lesson. 2. Students discover what Mary learned about God by completing Promises, Promises puzzle (on CD-ROM). 7

Get Thinking (10-15 minutes) Welcome students and help them begin to think about today s Big Idea. Promise Pop! Ahead of time, cut apart Promise Strips. Place three strips (one strip from each section) in each balloon. Blow up balloons. On a sheet of paper write, I promise to... Give each student a balloon. Students pop balloons in various ways (sitting, stomping, use a ballpoint pen, etc.). Then students read the promise strips that were inside their balloons. They choose the promise they will keep and finish the sentence aloud, I promise to (state their action). (Optional: Students cut neck of balloon with scissors to avoid making a popping sound.) Big Idea We can celebrate because God kept His promise to send Jesus. you need Promise Strips (from CD- ROM), balloons, sheet of paper, marker, ballpoint pen. Connect: > > Which promise in your balloon is almost impossible to keep? Which one is easy? Which promise is a good promise to keep? Why? Why should we keep our promises? (People trust that we will do what we say. We become dependable.) > Today we will hear about how God kept his promise to the whole world! Because God keeps his promises, we know that we can depend on Him, too! 8

Get God s Word Promises Kept Winter Lesson 1 (15-25 minutes) Help students find Luke 1 in their Bibles. Tell the following story summary in your own words, guiding students to find answers in their Bibles. Story Starter Ahead of time, arrange for two adult volunteers to come into class. Instruct one person to act happy and excited when students yell, Surprise! and the other to act frightened. you need Bible for yourself and each student, Lesson 1 Poster, party blowers. In just a moment, a couple of people are going to arrive. Let s yell surprise when they come in! Volunteers enter and students yell surprise! What was the difference between our two guests reactions to our surprise? In our story today, there is a big surprise. And some people had different reactions to the surprise! Storytelling idea Recruit another adult to help you tell the part of the story in which Zechariah cannot speak. A Fearful Priest Many, many years after Saul and David and Solomon were kings, prophets told people messages from God. God told the prophets to warn them about the bad things that would happen because they did not obey God. But God also promised to send a Savior who would show God s love for His people. The people were happy about this news! But they still disobeyed God. And that bad things God had warned them about happened. Many more years passed. Now an army from Rome had marched in and taken over the country. The Romans were in charge, and the Israelites did NOT like it! The people were still waiting for God s promised Savior. TIP Invite a volunteer to read aloud the information under Roman Rule on page 202 in What the Bible Is All About for Kids. 9

One of those people was an old priest named Zechariah. He and his wife, Elizabeth, had no children, even though they had prayed about it for years. One day it was his turn to burn the incense at the Temple. As he entered, many people waited outside, praying. He was doing his job when he looked up and OH MY! Read Luke 1:11-12 to find out who Zechariah saw! Even when the angel said, Don t be afraid! Zechariah was gripped by fear! The angel went on to tell him something AMAZING. Although Zechariah was an old man, he had prayed for years for a son. Now, his prayer was about to be answered! The angel told Zechariah that God would do great things through this son who was to be named John. He told Zechariah how this child would be a joy and a delight. He would be a prophet like Elijah, preparing people for the Lord! Zechariah squinted up at the angel. How can I be sure of this? he asked. I m an old man and my wife s old, too. He wasn t EXCITED by the angel s announcement; he was SUSPICIOUS! Read what the angel said in Luke 1: Pretend to go on with the story, unable to talk. Gesture to the second storyteller, who takes over telling the story here. Meanwhile, people were waiting outside the Temple Zechariah was taking longer than usual. And when he came out, he made all SORTS of motions, but he could not speak a WORD! He went silently home. His wife Elizabeth DID get pregnant and she wasn t afraid. She was delighted! The Lord has done this for me! He has taken away my shame! she said. A Fearless Girl About six months later, God sent the SAME angel Gabriel to a little town at the other end of Israel. Gabriel had another birth announcement to make! This time, it was to Elizabeth s cousin, a young girl named Mary. She lived in Nazareth, a village up in Galilee. Engaged to a man named Joseph, she was probably JUST as startled as Zechariah when Gabriel said, Greetings! You are highly favored. The Lord is with you. What would YOU say if an angel said that to YOU? Mary wasn t sure WHAT was going on, but the angel said 10

Winter Lesson 1 Big Idea We can celebrate because God kept His promise to send Jesus. to her, Don t be afraid! You ve found favor with God and you will give birth to a son. Name Him Jesus. Mary couldn t figure out how she could do this without a husband so she asked! Read Luke 1:35-37 to find out. Mary was amazed. But then she said, Let it be as you have told me. I m the Lord s servant. Songs of Celebration Mary was so excited! She went right away to visit Elizabeth! When she got to Elizabeth s door, the baby inside Elizabeth jumped for joy and Elizabeth began to tell Mary wonderful things about her baby. She also said, Mary, you are blessed because you believe that God will keep His promise to You! Mary was so happy that she sang a beautiful song about the way God was keeping His promises made for so many years. She was glad and full of faith that God was going to do great things! Elizabeth and Mary had a wonderful three months together. They were both eager to see what amazing things God would do through their sons! When John was born, everyone gathered to see the baby. The family expected him to be named after his father but Elizabeth said, No. His name is John. When they asked Zechariah (in sign language) what he thought, he motioned for something to write on. He wrote, His name is John. Everyone was amazed! TIP Show Lesson 1 Poster and ask students to tell how they think Zechariah told everyone the name of their baby. First storyteller resumes the story. Suddenly, Zechariah could talk again and did he ever talk! He praised God for keeping His promises to His people. He prophesied and told how his son John would grow up to be a prophet like Elijah. John would fulfill God s promise to help His people prepare for the coming of God s Son, the Messiah! Mary must have been very excited as she traveled back to her home in Nazareth. She still had awhile to wait before her baby would be born. What would her baby be like? This baby would be the Savior God had promised to all of her people! Mary was ready to do whatever God had planned for her! 11

Wrap-Up God kept His promise to send His Son into this world to be our Savior. This is great news that we can celebrate! Show party blower. It s fun to show excitement when we are happy. Blow party blower. Mary and Zechariah were so happy that they sang to God and thanked Him for the promise He was keeping. Action Plan Thank God for His great love and promises. Read John 3:16 aloud. This verse talks about the very same promise that Mary, Zechariah, and Elizabeth celebrated. God kept His promise and sent Jesus because He loves us! At Christmastime we celebrate Jesus birth AND that God keeps His promises! Talk with individual students about salvation. (See Connecting Kids to Jesus article on CD-ROM.) Connecting Kids to Jesus God promised both Mary and Zechariah that their sons would be very important. John would prepare the people for the arrival of Jesus, and Jesus would show the world God s love and forgiveness. Jesus came so everyone can have eternal life if they believe He died for their sins! Jesus loves you and wants you to be in God s family! 12

Get Talking Winter Lesson 1 (25-30 minutes) Distribute Lesson 1 Kid Talk Cards. Students fill in the squares to show who said the phrases on Side 1. What did the angel Gabriel tell Zechariah? What did Gabriel tell Mary? (She would have God s > own Son, the Savior of the world.) Zechariah, Elizabeth and Mary found out that God > keeps His promises. They must have been very excited that He chose them to be part of the promise! Point to photo of party blower. We blow party blowers at celebrations to show how excited we are to celebrate a happy occasion. Today and every day, we can celebrate that Jesus came into our world! Whiteboard Time Brainstorm with students words they use to celebrate ( Hooray! Yeah! Yay! Hallelujah! Whoo-hoo! Awesome! Way to go! Thank God! Merry Christmas! Etc.). Invite students to write words on the whiteboard. After brainstorming, talk about times kids would use specific words. What words can we use to celebrate God s love and promises He gives to us? Volunteers take turns to circle words they would use. Thank You is one word that we can use! I thank God for sending Jesus and keeping His promise to the world! Students look at Side 2 of Kid Talk Cards and read Bible verse together. According to John 3:16, why did God send His Son? (Because He loves us so much. So we can have eternal life.) Today, let s celebrate God s love for us! Choose some of our celebratory words that tell how excited and happy you are for all God gives to you! Students use words that were written on the whiteboard or choose their own words to make a prayer to God, and write in the spaces provided. What has God given you that makes you feel happy? God promised to send Jesus and He did! What other promises does God give > us? (He will answer our prayers. He will be with us. He will provide for us.) This week, think about all you celebrate about Jesus and thank Him! > 13

Prayer Invite volunteers to tell prayer requests as you write them on the whiteboard. Pray with students about the needs and concerns they mention. Then lead students to pray a popcorn prayer, giving thanks to God for his love and promises by finishing the sentence, Thank You God for... Art Give each student a toilet paper tube and sheet of gift wrap to make Christmas Crackers. Centering the tube on the 12-inch (30.5- cm) edge of paper, student tapes the edge of paper to the tube, rolls paper around tube, and tapes the other edge to secure. Student ties ribbon near the tube to close one end, carefully pinching paper together first to prevent paper from tearing. Student fills the you need Bibles, toilet paper tubes, 9x12-inch (23x30.5-cm) sturdy gift wrap sheets, tape, curling ribbon, confetti, small items to fill crackers (wrapped candies, stickers, erasers, etc.), slips of paper, markers. cracker with confetti, small candies, stickers, etc. On slips of paper, student writes a message such as Celebrate Jesus! Thank God for sending Jesus! or John 3:16 and places it inside. Tie ribbon around open end of cracker to close. Students give crackers to family or friends to surprise them. Recipient pulls ends to open cracker. Connect: Christmas crackers are part of some families celebrations at Christmas. Give your Christmas cracker to someone you know. It contains the best surprise of all the message of God s love for us. God loved us so much that He sent Jesus. That is something to celebrate! TIPs 1. Purchase cracker snappers at craft stores to add an authentic snap to your cracker. Insert into the tube before tying and filling. 2. If time allows, students make their own confetti using a hole punch and colorful paper. 14

Winter Lesson 1 Game Students sit on the floor in a circle. Demonstrate how to hold camera lens facing you, say Celebrate Jesus! and pass camera to the person on your left. Do a practice round, passing the camera all the way around the circle. Set the camera self-timer for 45 seconds and give camera to you need Bibles, digital camera with self-timer. one student. Students pass camera around circle and say phrase until the camera flashes. The student caught in the picture then tells something he or she is grateful for that God has promised.
